POR and POFQ theming scary for kids?

My wife and I are going to WDW in Oct, with our parents, and our 6 year old daughter. We are currently booked at the WL, but now I am contemplating switching to one of the PO resorts, as it would save us around $500, and I have heard good things about them.

In looking at the pictures, my concern is that the theming might be scary to my daughter. She is now big on clowns (although she isn't terrified of them), and I notice that a lot of the theming is around clown-oriented things. Has anybody had a problem with their children being afraid of these things?

Since we are taking our parents with us, I am leaning even more towards PO. I think they would really appreciate the beauty of the resorts, but on the other hand, I can't have my daughter terrified to go in the pool or something. We all want to stay at the same resort.

So, just looking on some input. Do you think it would be a big deal? Should I stick with WL? If you recommend switching to PO, is POR or POFQ the better way to go? The pool will be important.

Thanks for the input.

I would not let this concern deter you. The only thing that is really themed with the Mardi Gras masks is the lobby and fast food service sitting area...and I don't think you'll spend a lot of time there. There are Mardi Gras people on the bedspreads, but they are not scary looking.

At POFQ -- Not clowns, actually, more like jesters and animated alligators with a dragon pool slide where you come out of it's mouth. None of it is particularly scary, and it makes for a lot of cute photo ops around the resort.

POR doesn't have any of this stuff, just a nice laid back old southern feel.

She will probably not be scared of either place. Now if you were asking about BWI and the scary clown pool, that would be a different story!

Maybe BWI is the pool I was thinking about. The one where you come out of its mouth on the slide, right?

Good to hear that the resort is not bombarded with the jesters and what not. Sounds like I will not need to worrry.

I was just looking at some pictures of the POR pool area, and it looks more Huck Finn-ish than anything, which I think she would like.

Thanks again, now we have another decision to make....

There is no clown slide at PORS, but there is a dragon slide at POFQ. I have 2 girls that are 6 and 2 and they love it there - they are not scared at all.

But they also love the WL - they have hair braiding there poolside, pool games daily and the Cub's Den (evening babysitting).

 Hi, we have stayed at all 3 resorts you mentioned. We have 5 kids and the jesters are not scary, and the pool at POFQ has a neat dragon slide. My kids love both PO resorts. PO has "Ole man island" swimming pool, and it is very nice, although kind of a walk to get to it. If you can afford WL, it is a great place. The pool has a slide and my kids especially loved the pool access. It is really shallow, and you enter the pool on a big ramp like area. It also has the neat geysers that go off beyond the pool area. But all 3 resorts are very nice. The food court at PO is one of our favorites.

I am pretty sure my daughter would be happy staying under a rock, as long as we were at WDW...

I am torn. I keep thinking WL may be worth it for the larger beds, and location, if nothing else. We'll have to talk about it.

Thanks for the advice. Good to hear from someone else with a daughter the same age as mine.

Our DD 3 didn't find the decor at POFQ scary at all. I don't think you would have a problem with your 6 year old. I suggest you show DD pictures of the resorts and see how she reacts. We loved the FQ and POR has nothing there that would be scary for her. No matter where you decide to stay I am sure she will be happy!

Have a Great trip! Keep us posted on what you decide.

Our first stop in the POFQ food court, the kids 3yr and 6yr were a little frightened. We explained they were only silly masks and we didn't have any problems the rest of the trip. They loved the alligator statues. The 6yr old loved the dragon slide, 3yr old was afraid of the slide (too fast, into too deep of water - she was 38" tall, the water there is 42" deep I believe) - but she was not afraid of the dragon.

Hi, I haven't stayed at Port Orleans yet, but will in May (POR). Here's a picture of POFQ food court decor:

Personally, I don't like it. If you stay at POR, you can walk to POFQ and use the pool there if you want to, because they are "sister" resorts. I assume you have separate rooms booked at WL. If you wanted to (not sure if you'd want to, though!) you could all share a room at POR - Alligator Bayou section because they have a trundle bed for your child. There would be an extra charge for the extra adults, though. I'm not sure what that is - maybe $15/person.

Good luck with your decision!

The Pool at French Quarter as stated has a Sea Serpent slide with King Neptune riding it. The Alligators are part of a jazz band with water squirting out of the instruments. The food court is decorated to resemble a Mardi Gras Float warehouse with the float pieces hanging from the ceiling. I can see where a few of them might be scarey to a small child, they are very large and they are looking down on you from the ceiling.

Riverside's pool is on a island and as stated is done in a Huck Finn/Tom Sawyer theme. Nothing there to worry about. The food court at Riverside is a old Cotton Gin, with a water wheel, to me one of the most fun food courts around. :flower:

I'd highly recommend POR. The beauty of the grounds will entertain your parents while your kids will love the themed pool. No statues there! Also, in the evening when the sun is setting you can take a nice stroll through the grounds or if you're up to it, a nice horse drawn carriage ride. Truly a classy resort! :goodvibes

I'd recommend Magnolia Terrace, close to everything plus sheer beauty!

Thanks for all of the advice. I am seriously thinking about the switch. I mentioned it to my dad, and he was thinking my mom would like it better than WL, because she likes that old country feel.

I am really leaning towards POR, as I think my daughter would like the pool better. I am going to talk to my wife about it tonight, and see about getting things switched.

Thanks again,
Andy

Love the WL but POR is a great too ! Very low key relaxed southern charm there. Beautiful to walk or sit on the benches. Nice to have mansion side or the bayou side to enjoy.

I would hesitate on POFQ, for some jesters are clowns, and with the Mardi Gras theme in the food court etc, I wouldn't take a chance on upsetting my child's vacation. She will love the POR, my kids always have, especially at her age.
