Pop Century Legendary Years

I stayed there a couple weeks ago with my fiance. We saw construction equipment and piles of dirt back there that weren't there when I stayed in January. Weird...

Remember, America, these rooms would have been finished 6 years ago and entertained many guests over the years, if it wasn't for the insane murderous terrorists. As far as I'm concerned, there aren't enough bombs on this planet to pay them back for what they have done to America, the World and the people of Earth.

Absolutley, my sentiments exactly........:thumbsup2

In additional to the Main Hall (Legendary Hall) .. the two pods of hotel room buildings.. each with three wings.. are still there. Nothing has been torn down since construction stopped.

The rumors I've been hearing said that construction would commence again there in mid-to-late 2008... but that's just a rumor at this point.

I hope they continue construction on the Legendary Years. I remember going two years ago and seeing the sad empty buildings across the lake. My friend and I promised when they were finished we would stay there, since I am a big Shirley Temple fan and would love to stay in the 1930s. Pop Century has to be just that, a full century.. not just 50 years.

What a great comment!

We should all write letters to Disney telling them that the name should change to

- "Pop Fifty"
- "Fifty-Pop"
- "Pop 50"
- "Pop Half-Century" ?
- "Pop Half-Completed" ;)

We should totally! Let's start a petition! Pop Century is false advertising!

We were just at Pop in Feb. and my dh actually mentioned that he saw more piles of dirt and such and thought they were starting to work on it, finally. That last time we were there was in 12/06. We do not recall seeing the dirt mounds at that time. Lets hope they finish it!!:cheer2:

Nice job guys....you build something and decide to knock it down. THE TIMEGAP BRIDGE WILL HAVE NO POINT NOW. I'm very disappointed with that decision.

Seriously though, they should rename the resort then. It's not a century, its half of one.

Wow, that is horrendously disappointing. I've stayed at POP 4 times and have been looking forward to staying at the legendary years since I first stayed there in 2004. Just last December, my girlfriend and I were looking over to that half of the hotel grounds and talking about finally getting to stay in "the other half" of POP sometime in the next few years. There goes that one, FAIL.

im so disappointed. they should not be allowed to call it pop century. it is only pop half a century. how could they just knock them down? do you think they will EVER decide to do the other years or is it a lost cause?

wow. that's amazing. when we were there for our wedding, a bunch of cast members told us that disney was selling/leasing a lot of it's land. the general consensus seems to be that the company isn't doing well, but when we worked there 6 years ago everyone was saying the same thing.

i too was excited to stay in the "new" pop-century. i simply can't believe they're tearing it down! what is going on here???

If Mr. Bowen is correct.. they are tearing down two uncompleted buildings (each with three wings) and perhaps the main hall.... Seems silly to tear that down since it was externally complete and has been used for coordination of housekeeping and grounds maintenance staff...

Ironically.. if this is true.. then Generation Gap bridge has all the MORE meaning... :)

Personally -- as with everything Disney - I'll believe it when I see it or see trusted photographic proof of it...

It is entirely possible that they cannot complete the two lodging buildings as is after having been left for so long, without a lot more investment - it could be trashing and rebuilding is better. But then again, having nothing in place of eyesores is preferable if they aren't going to be completed any time soon.

As for selling/leasing land, that is happening - but that's at over at Flamingo Crossing, or whatever they are calling the Western Way development. I don't know if they are actually selling the land, or leasing it, and who knows what the business decisions there are...but the parks certainly are NOT strapped for cash - I believe recent statements show them to be quite profitable.

Going out on a limb here and just thinking out loud but I wonder if WDW ever did decide to build Legendary Years if the old skeleton would have to be torn down per agreement with whatever contracting/construction company they use. A waste yes but I have seen it happen with other buildings. Thaqt is not to say i think that they are actually going to build a hotel there soon but I wouldn't be shocked if they did and tore down what had already been started before building again. Right now they are into the DVC thing so I don't think completing Pop Century is tops on the list. I agree though they really should complete that area. After all Pop Century really isn't "century" right now is it?

I emailed that same question to Disney and this is what they emailed back:

Dear Crystal,

I was wondering what is going to happen to the "Legendary Years" project
at Pop Century Resort? The empty buildings have been there for years and
I was wondering if there were plans to develop them? I think it is a
great idea and would love to stay there someday.

There is no way that is true. First of all Disney would not spend that much money on something and then tear it down. Secondly Disney hotels have been operating at 97% for the past year and a half so I really doubt they plan on getting rid of hotel rooms on property.

Um Disney Institute... 20,000 Leagues... Disney Village... Disney has built and torn down and rebuilt several times in its history. Parts of DI got incorportated into SSR, but a majority of it was torn down and new buildings built on top...

Some posters on another internet board think the name is going to be changed to POP CULTURE. It's consistent with the theming. Since it's the same number of letters it should be relatively easy to change the signage.

Some people claim the current signs are currently covered, meaning a name change is imminent.

Disney may have decided to get out of the hotel construction business, excepting DVC. Disney sold/leased land to Four Seasons and the Western construction is all outside hotels.
