we were at Pop Dec 5 - 13, and all we saw different were a bunch of white trailers in the parking lot - otherwise, the reflection of the empty buildings combined with the lovely colors of autum leaves of the trees against the blueness of the sky and lake was truly awe inspiring.... ;)

White trailers are the trailers with the New mattresses in them or were in them maybe they are not done with the mattresses yet or they just havent moved them yet! I have pics of those trailers when we were there in August they were actually taking new mattresses out of them and putting them in rooms! :)

People at WDW call that the Depression years because it never got finished after 911. But I did ask what will become of it. my DVC guy told me it will all have to be torn down since it has huge mold growing all over it before it could ever be used. Disney is investing in 2 things The Cruises and DVC. My suggestion was open DVC for smaller points.

Considering it is strictly concrete structure that has been completed no interior drywall yet, it will be far less expensive to treat the mold than tear down and rebuild.

My only disappoint is that this is Disney. They are a world of Magic. Are you telling me that they couldn't have invested a few thousand dollars to dress up the unused area to look like something else? Throw a bunch of movie props over there, paint some bright colors and make it not look like a ghostly white, unfinished resort.

I'm disagreeing with most of the comments here.
We do POP at least 3 trips of the 4 trips we do a year. I have never noticed the buildings before. IF I had (I'll be there in May with a zoom lens) I will surely want to see what I've never noticed before.
Furthermore, from the pictures I have seen it would be a COOL thing (not an eyesore) to see. I think the old buildings look COOL! It would be more interesting to see than a field, or worse yet... as many of you suggest... a big landfill bound pile of refuse.
As a contractor myself, many of you have no idea what you are talking about in regards to "tear it down". These buildings cost a GREAT DEAL to build. Consider how much YOUR tiny house cost, then consider the size difference in your house and these huge buildings, each building containing HUNDREDS of "miniature" homes in itself. The cost to build just ONE wing of this building would be far more than many of you ever imagined! Especially with all the site preps, surveying, soil tests, environmental planning, zoning, and other numerous little "legal aspects" that you haven't discussed. Think of all the manpower and all the man hours of work. Not only that, but while comparing them in your mind consider the difference in residential property values and prime Disney property value. The entire cost of building this must have been enormous!
To tear this down would be a complete shame.

I have done plumbing in homes with no guests living there in 10, 12, and even 15 years. I once replumbed a house that had no guests in over 14 years. Iit took about 3 days (me working by myself... not a crew like Disney would have) to bring 14 fixtures up to date and make the whole house "re-liveable".
My point is those of you saying tear it down... WHY??? Just because you don't like the view you see for a brief few minutes of your trip??? I don't like the view of people boarding Soarin, but I still do the wait, and enjoy the ride.
My point is if Disney tore down those huge buildings, that would be a HUGE financial waste. I'm not one to scream GREEN GREEN, but just think of all the waste that would go into the landfills!!! WHY would you ever do such a thing???
As far as rebuilding them, YES, there would be problems. YES it could be costly. But YES I would have to say the end results would far outweigh the minor losses. Consider this tiny thought... How much do you pay a tradesman to use a power washer or chemical sprayer VS how much you would pay a top of his pay in the nation building contractor or engineer for the services THEY would give to rebuild. The power sprayer guy MIGHT make $20 an hour if he's a foreman. Now how much do you think the specialist engineer demands for HIS services?
If you do the math... the only logical solution would be to either let it sit as it is till further building CAN be done, or rebuild it now. Tearing it down would be just plain illogical.
I too agree a value DVC would be a wise idea. We are "POPers", and we did the math for the DVC. It didn't add up as smart for us in our special circumstances. However, I liked the central idea. If there were a DVC for value resort guests.. I'd have to reconsider.
Another idea would be a resort set up JUST FOR conventions and groups. It could have excessive space built for conventions and meetings and it would sure make things nicer for the rest of us during events like Brazilian week, Pop Warner, Spring Break, etc.:thumbsup2

Given that they somewhat recently put in windows and doors, I'm guessing that the existing structures were not that bad and can be worked with.

As for the exposed slabs that didn't get built on, with the plumbing/wiring ducts sticking out, there may need to be work done - but probably not that much.

Hmm...maybe I'm misremembering, but I could have sworn someone said that they replaced the garbage bags with windows...

In 2002 there were windows and doors already on one part... not that I got lost and wandered over there or anything like that. And what looks like the railings on the upper floors? It is just two by fours nailed up...
:rolleyes1

I don't think they should be torn down, nor do I think they look REAL bad, but I think the landscaping sucks and drags it down. If they would keep the grass down on that side and maybe plant some flowers to make it look better, people wouldn't care so much.

Jenseib: I have to agree. As much as Disney works to keep "back stage" shielded from view in every other instance it seems inconsistent to keep the Legendary Years buildings in that abandoned state. It would certainly be more consistent to apply some paint and landscaping, or even plant a hedge. I must assume that some finance guys have looked at that issue and decided that the expense was unjustfiied, but it's still an eyesore.

Windows and doors have always been there. Black plastic (garbage bag type material) was used to cover the windows in the guest rooms. Legendary Hall (lobby building) has windows but the doors have been boarded. There has been no change to the Legendary years in several years.

We had a room that was by the Lake in Jan. And we bought into DVC and I asked the gout it. In order for it to ever be occupied it will have to be torn down completely. It is covered in Mold!
Lexi:flower3:

I don't buy that. I'm not saying that you are lying, I just think the person who told you that doesn't know what they are talking about. Unless the person you spoke to was a certified mold technician (Yes, there is such a thing) I wouldn't take what they say as gold.
I repair homes all the time that were covered in mold. Mold dies when it's food source is removed. It can then be cleaned and sanitized, and the surfaces returned to a like new condition. It would be costly for sure, but certainly a LOT less than rebuilding.

That was my thought... couldn't they just slap a coat of brightly colored paint on the visible areas? Seriously?

Sure, this abandoned creepiness appeals to me, but I don't think it appeals to the majority of the population!
