POP CENTURY ... LAST WEEK of SEPT. 07 MEET

Sounds like the homeschoolers won't be the only ones there in Sept. this time! LOL :dance3:

My niece and nephew will only be in school 9 days before they take a week off. My SIL decided they are still young enough to get away with it, and that free dining was worth it. :wizard:

Oh well, I know everyone is not in favor of both homeschooling and/ or pulling kids out of school to travel, but sometimes doing things differently works. :rolleyes1

My kids will actually be on fall break so it's perfect timing for free dining. Their school system is on a more balanced calendar, so even though they start school earlier and finish later than most other districts, they have more breaks in between. At first I thought I wouldn't like it, but I love it. When there's no school, there's no homework. No homework for them means no homework for me :cool1:

Ugh! Is anyone else totally bummed about clothes shopping? I've been going for about two weeks now and EVERYTHING looks aweful!

I always dread having to shop:sad2: I am a pooh sized gal who needs to stop eating the honey :rolleyes1

yeah I know how that is! I've got a good deal of "Flub". Lately though, I've come to the conclusion that I'm pretty fabulous (Flub, notwithstanding). Sometimes when I'm looking in the mirror, assessing my flaws, I have to tell myself "Wrinkle here...wrinkle there...but I'm still a cutie". Somedays it's hard believe it though...you have to have a strong "illusion-ation"!

I love your outlook:love: I am going to steel it.....K?

Morning Girls!

It's good to know that I 'm not the only one with clothing issues.

I too am taking my child out of school, 6, possibly 7 school days. It is K, though, so I think we'll be OK. I have considered homeschooling, but DD really needs to be around other children. Somewhere down the line I may change my mind though.

Im taking my son, who will be entering 2nd grade, out of school...I think he will only be in school like 3 weeks before I take him out for a 11 day trip!:woohoo:
I would LOVE to home school. The only downfall is that then I would Never get a break:lmao:

I'm right there with you gals! Dd (5th grade) will be in school for about 3 weeks before our trip, then she'll miss 11 days. She's going to have a teacher she's had before (teacher moved from 3d to 5th grade this year), and I've already talked to her and the school administration, who have all promised me it won't be a problem since it was prearranged.

Here's a funny story about Super Family Fun Day...When my kids go back to school the next day, I have to send a note explaining their absence. Here in Pa., the state requires it and you can geta big fat fine if you forget just a few times. Anyway, in order for it to be an "excused" absence they have to be sick or there has to be an emergency of some sort. But I'm unwilling to lie in the note and say that my kids are sick when they aren't. It sets a bad example for them and it feels wrong to me. Plus, I don't like the administration telling me when I can and cannot have access to my kids. Anyway...to get to the point...I always send a note which says "Dear Mrs. (insert current teacher's name), please excuse Bailey's absence yesterday. It was Super Family Fun Day." The teachers get such a kick out of it and they'll usually make a funny and supportive comment. The administration, however, always deems it "unexcused". What can you do? :confused3 One day, I envision myself in court contesting a fine and explaining the virtue of Super Family Fun Day to a judge  Won't that be a kick?

I hear you--even though they've told us it won't be a problem because it's prearranged, you never know. But my dh would love to have to take on the school in truancy court. My dd does very well in school, I volunteer at school all the time for various things, and we've donated a bunch of electronic equipment to the school through dh's company. Bring it on, baby!

That sounds great!! How do you go about packing their clothes and stuff? Do you pack everything while they're at school or when their sleep? I don't know how you can keep the secret so long. I would've lost it a long time ago :rotfl:

I'm thinking I'll do the packing during the day when they are in school but it takes me a few days so I'll have to put all of the suitcases away each day. If they do happen to notice the suitcases, I can always say that I'm packing DH for a business trip (he teake these periodically). I am terrible at keeping happy secrets! So I'm pretty impressed with myself right now :thumbsup2

I'm taking DD-7 and DS-11 out for 8 days for this trip. DD is under 8 so by law she is not required to be in school but for DS I have to submit an "Educational Journey" form. This should excuse 5 of the 8 days. The remaining 3 will be unexcused. Oh well. I'm less concerned with that and more concerned with my 6th grade son catching up on all the work he'll miss. :scared: I intend to get as much of the work in advance as I can for him so he can put a little dent in it during our trip. I know some educators frown on taking kids out of school and I do take my kids education seriously. I get them to school on time, their homework gets done, I volunteer in the classroom twice a week and I help to run a PTO that raises almost $20,000 a year for our small school district in the mountains of Pa. Nevertheless, I feel that Life is education, too. And I want them to squeeze every amazing experience out of this life that they can. And on a more selfish note... I miss them soooo much when they are in school. I relish the idea of stealing them away for 11 days of fun, fun, fun!!;)

OK - I'm in BIG trouble!! DD is also 10 going into 5th grade!! (I'm looking for friends for her!!) well I've taken her out of school the last week of Sept for ummm like the last 2 years - and they always have a break then - NOT this year!! She also is in the 98%tile in the nation.distirct.class - so I've never really cared about her making school work up - plus they dont give grades - so what if they "check" mark her - she's had the teachers that say "anybody but dd can answer or ask questions" makes me mad they treat kids that way!!

So I take her out of school!! "so what"!! (btw I am a teacher - since having kids I am the "permanant sub for the district)

I want to join in, but I have nothing to say!!

Eeyore45, that never stopped ME!!! :rotfl2:

Since I am sort of in the education business myself I say that "Different strokes for different folks". I can understand the school attempting to make some parents be more responsible but not every case is the same. If a child is doing well in school and is capable of making up any needed work I see no problem. Homeschooling is the same thing. Works for some, not for others, but then so does the present school system. Education is my mission in life. I am a good teacher, but not for every child. Every child is unique and learns differently. If they want to learn and laugh I might be just what they need.

Did I see someone from Terre Haute on here?? If so YOU might be a relative!!! My mom's family is from that area, that and Brazil.

Slightly Goofy who is headed on a sudden trip out of town tomorrow

Linda- Farrah (heath-and-javensmom) is from Terre Haute! I am from IN too, Stendal, it is sort of between Oakland City and Huntingburg.

What do you teach, may I ask? Oh, and where are you going tomorrow? Somewhere exciting I hope!!!

my 12yo will be of school for 2 weeks... and a few days above that... I figure I'll let the teachers know as early as possible so we can get the homework so he can be sure it's all done while we are gone.. and offer to email his stuff to him if need be but I hope not

I just wanted to thank everyone who stopped by my trip report, it means a lot.

:)

I am homeschooled [since March] so I might have a biased opinion on this, but I think it's okay to take your child out of school if they have good grades, and a good track record of making up missed work. Especially if it's only for a few days and they're going to see the Mouse!

Anyway, 58 more days! Yay, I remember it like yesterday that I was happy it was under 100.
