Poor Sportsmanship in the NFL

would you choose to protest your anthem, even though you have the right? Even though you were raised to respect it?

Yes, if I felt I had a compelling enough reason to protest. I wouldn't protest someone else's anthem, though.

According to this wikipedia page, illegal immigrants are counted in the per capita stats: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_net_migration_rate

"The net migration rate does not distinguish between economic migrants, refugees, and other types of migrants nor does it distinguish between lawful migrants and unlawful migrants."

The US population is approx 319,000,000. Even 300,000 "anchor babies" work out to just under 1 per 1,000. So even if we added it on top of the US's rate, you'd still be taking fewer migrants per capita than Canada.

I have been discussing the immigrant population as a percentage of total population, not migration rates. The 300,000-400,000 children of illegal/unauthorized immigrants granted birthright citizenship is the per annum number, not the total sub-population. If you include all the birthright citizens as immigrants, the migrant population of the US is approximately 80-85 million or 25-26% of the population (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_immigrant_population).

ETA: I just re-read our last several posts, and we are definitely discussing two different things. My apologies for the confusion.

Great link! Especially if you hit "sort descending" on the table showing what percent of the nation are immigrants.

Vatican City is - of course - made up 100 percent of immigrants.

The United Arab Emirates is almost 84 percent immigrant. That makes sense - there's a LOT of money to made made there and I imagine a lot of people try to immigrate in order to work, and they're very strict about who they grant citizenship to (I think you have to be related to one of the main founding families?).

Even if you counted birthright and bumped the US up to 25 percent immigrant population, that still puts them at a lower percentage than Australia (which isn't counting birthright).

Looking at that table I have to conclude that the only real "Nation of Immigrants" is Vatican City. Canada and the US aren't even in the running for that title!

My initial post was about total immigrant population. I responded to your post on that subject in comparison to other specific countries. You said it should be per capita/percentage and said Canada is higher. Great. I actually agree. I included some other statistics that I thought were relevant. I never claimed the US percentage was higher than Australia or anyone else for that matter.

Of course, you've already made it a point to show the US is the "Worst of the Worst" at math...

That's okay, you're still quite literate: http://qz.com/638845/americans-are-...answering-even-the-most-basic-math-questions/ ;)

Anyway, in all seriousness, I think we've been talking at cross purposes, and I also think I misunderstood what you were getting at. :hippie:

Which would mean that Canada still takes in more immigrants per capita than the US. ;)

Considering Canada is physically larger than the US AND less densely populated to boot, by all rights you should take in more in total, not just per capita :)

THANK YOU!! You're braver than me, but I always wonder this to when I hear 'America is the greatest country in the world' Meh, no. Name one thing that you can do in the States that you can't do anywhere else..I haven't heard one thing yet.

Drive to Canada ;)

Look, as a Canadian who's frequently critical of US policy, you're obviously not going to see it how I do & that's okay. And here's how I see it:

I believe the US provides the most opportunities to succeed when starting from nothing. The flip side of course is we provide little in the way of a safety net for those who fail. But, there cannot be winners without losers, and that's what we're about. And no, that's not for everyone, but it's what I like.

On another note, I believe the US encompasses the most cultural & ecological diversity of any one nation. We literally have it all: the good, the bad, the ugly - and it's only one's point of view that determines which is which.

So, that's why I believe my country is the greatest. The good news is that even if you disagree, neither of us has to be "wrong".

Yep, we'll put these Middle Eastern folk in the frozen tundra, with no infrastructure and roads that are only passable three months of the year. I'm sure they'll survive just fine!

Interesting all this discussion of free speech. Do we have it, or don't we?

Did everyone see yesterday's leaked memo about how some of our leaders think people from the BLM should be "handled"? I.e. making sure not to say certain things in front of them lest they be offended or angered.

Watch what you say around the BLM people! :ssst:

BLM leaders are not too happy about it, and rightfully so, IMO.

Then we have schools like Rutgers posting memos to students reminding them not to say certain things lest they be taken as "micro aggressions".

Are these examples of our speech not really being "free"? Or is it more along the lines of, "just because you can say something doesn't mean you should"? You tell me.

If it's the latter, then maybe that's what many people think about Mr. Kaepernick's gestures.

I am all for free speech, even when u don't like what you say. Censorship us very dangerous, and I do t think anyone here (with one exception) doesn't think he should be allowed to say what he wants. We can just disagree with it ;)

The one free speech caveat I can think of is if your employer places certain restrictions on you. Then you're still free to say what you want, as long as you accept that there may be consequences.
