Poor service in restaurants.

Just a vent about the lousy service we experienced in a restaurant last night.

We ate dinner at a place called Charlie Brown's, which is a chain of steakhouses that I believe is only in New Jersey. It is similar to Outback or Lonestar. Anyway, the food is consistantly good; I prefer their steaks over Outback's, and they have a nice salad bar.

So last night's dinner started out well. Our drinks and food were good; the salad bar was freshly stocked.

But then we finished eating and waited and waited and waited for our waitress to reappear from wherever she was hiding so that we could order dessert. She was absent so long that we decided to skip ordering a dessert, figuring we could be stuck there another hour if we did. My son's meal came with ice cream though, and he wanted that, so we thought we'd ask for it and the check at the same time.

Our waitress was nowhere to be found, so we asked the busboy to get her for us. He went over to a hostess/manager-type woman and another waitress and said something, but still, no one got her, and we continued to sit there cooling our heels. Meanwhile, I should tell you that the place had largely emptied out; busyness could not have been the excuse.

My husband got the hostess's attention and asked her to find our waitress. Then, she finally showed up with a big attitude, and we asked for the ice cream and the check. But then we needed change. And again, we sat there waiting and waiting for her to pick up the bill. My husband went to the bathroom and found her standing in the bar, smoking a cigarette. He told her we needed her to settle up.

I told him not to leave a penny over 10%, and she'd be lucky to get that. Her rotten service ruined what could have been an enjoyable meal.

Is it just us or does it seem like service in restaurants has gotten extremely poor over the past few years? I've been saying for months and now I mean it--from now on, we are going to tip according to the service we get. Usually, we wind up feeling bad for the server, but we've had it up to here.

Do they have a website? If so, send them an e-mail with your complaint. I found that this usually gets quicker results. Sorry, you had such a problem.

I don't think I would of left anything for a tip. That waitress was just plain rude. If my husband had found her at the bar and not waiting on us he'd of been wild!

I'd either find the website or write a letter to that particular location.

I know being a wait person isn't easy, very often they pull an extra shift and they are on their feet most of the time, but don't expect to get something for nothing. If you serve bad, your tip will reflect it.

I think customer service as a whole is on the decline.

Not only with some wait staff (I know there are many who are dedicated and hard working and go the extra mile for their tip) but the people who ring up your purchases at any store, be it Target or Macy's!

Is it too much to say "thank you" today?

I find the service at our Macy's atrocious!

Years ago, our Macy's (which was called Bamberger's way back) was known for its superior service. Now I hardly stand shopping there, it's gotten so bad.

I've received a number of gift cards for Macy's--in fact the main reason I go there now is to spend them--and the things almost never work. I've had this happen 3 or 4 times; I give them the gift card, and it's all they can do to use them. They call security, play with the computer, try to get me to pay with something else (I don't think so), etc. It's so aggravating!

I would have left a whole dollar for a tip, and that would have been generous. Her attitude spoke volumes, she just didn't care if she gave you good service. DH and I are very good tippers, but if I had received that kind of service, my tip would definately let her know what I thought of her service.

I also would have been asking the hostess for the manager's name.

Janice, I had a horrible customer service (actually lack thereof) at the Macy's in Manhattan.
Several years ago, I purchased a dress at the store in the afternoon. After returning to my hotel, I realized that the belt that should have been attached to the dress was missing. The next morning I drove back into the city (I was staying in Teaneck) to retrieve the missing belt. The sales clerk was extremely rude even though I had the sales receipt in hand. Finally, she agreed that I could have the belt (which we removed from a hanging dress, the loose one was never located), and handed it to me. I asked for a bag. She said, "You don't need a bag." I said, "Humor me." She threw a bag at me; I threw myself at a manager.

RPMom. I live in the town next door to Teaneck. Isn't it a pretty area? :D

During the 1980's, I worked in the City so one time I hit the Herald Square Macy's for a "One Day Sale." This was when they held them a few times a year, instead of a few times a month.

First I bought some cosmetics, then a dress. My Macy's card wouldn't accept the dress sale, and the salesman and I both thought it was because the two purchases were too close together.

I really wanted the dress, so I paid cash for it.

Wouldn't you know it? A month later, I got my statement, and the charge for the dress was on it. It took MONTHS and several letters to straighten out.

We have CSR's working for us here, the attitude on the newer folks over the past few years is horrid! It's not just in the rest's.
I think customer service as a whole is on the decline.
AMEN!
I find the service at our Macy's atrocious!
Don't get me started on that! And everytime I walk into a Macy's it looks like a cyclone hit!

JJ - Chris still has a Bambergers Card!!!! LOL

Bamberger's was my very first credit card. I was so proud of it!

I should have saved it; I used it for years after the name was changed.

BTW, the Charlie Brown's we were at was the one in Oradell. Aren't you near the one in Cedar Grove?

I'm near the Charlie Brown's in Montclair! ;)

Never go there though.

Janice you need to complain about the service. No one should have to wait that long and get that kind of attitude!

I work in Bergen Co - but yes, I live close to the one in Cedar Grove. Although I have to say tht I have not been to a Charlie Brown's in a LONG time!

I told him not to leave a penny over 10%,

She is lucky it wasn't me then. I would have left ZERO!!! Normally I am a very patient non-confrontational person, but what you described would have had me turning green and bursting out of my shirt!!! Finding her smoking a cigarette when she knew you were waiting would have been the last straw, and that would have set me off.

I would have left NOTHING and made sure I told the manager to let her know that we didn't "forget" to leave a tip.... we INTENTIONALLY didn't leave her a tip.

We waited over TWO HOURS for our food in St. John Saturday night..... a steakhouse called Churchill's. The food was good- but after you wait for TWO FREAKING HOURS.... does it matter? We were a large party (20) but we had the reservation for 2 weeks- they tried to tell us they had to call in extra kitchen crew.... HELLO! There were literally THOUSANDS of Shriners in town...

I agree that it is very aggravating when you are kept waiting to pay the bill. I know some people who would actually walk out without paying the bill under the circumstances!

I love our local Texas Roadhouse. The food is the best, the prices are reasonable, and the service has always been excellent.:D

You were extremely nice!! :( I would not have left her one single penny and I'm a server. I've worked plenty 10-15 hour days and I may be tired, but my service is NEVER as bad as what you experienced. Up at the bar smoking a cigarrette....UNEXCEPTABLE!! PERIOD!!  I may sit down to eat a meal if I'm closing, but my guests never see me and if they do, I tell them to please call me by name and I'm on my way. I've been told by many that I'm one of the best servers around and I do appreciate hearing that daily. I just enjoy what I do and my tips do show that. Never tip 10% because you feel you have to if your service was that bad. I don't do it and I work for tips. I tip above and beyond 10% anyway, so servers lose a lot from me if their service is stinky!
So sorry about your service. Almost sounds like the restaurant itself is kinda yucky. Even after finding a hostess you still sat forever waiting on your server...hmmmm....I would get a web address and let someone know right away.

When we wait too long we just find the manager, tell him/her the problem. Things seem to be taken care of after that. DH and I will wait for a reasonable time but after that we "tell on" the server.

Are you sure you're in NJ? This is STANDARD service in FL!!!! I'm from NJ and have been in FL 13 years now. I still get steam coming out my ears waiting for someone to check on us for more drinks, etc. And we wait forever for a check and the change. FL restaurants have no clue what SERVICE is! When I get steam coming out the ears, they've lost the tip.

Not that it hasn't already been said several times but.........if I get bad service the only tip I give is to the manager. If I get great service then I leave a great tip. If I get above and beyond the call of service service then not only is the tip great but I let everyone know. The manager, the establishment and everyone I talk to.

It's been said in this thread that customer service is on a decline and I can't agree with that more. I realize that "the customer is not always right", but 99.5% of the time if you give customers great service everyone is happy in the end. There is that .50% that no matter what you do you can not satisfy them. They are working the system and to heck with who ever gets in their way.

I work at a local government utility (a county run water dept.) We are the only way that county customers can get water unless they drill a well, regardless I try to give every customer that comes in the door the best service I can. No one in our office treats customers like they can "like it or lump it". We take pride in our job and our customers. I hope they feel that way.

In saying that.....I patronize establishments who treat me good and pass the word on about them and stay away from ones that don't ...........and pass the word on about them too.
