We had been promising Alana for years that we would take her to learn how to ski. Yesterday was finally the day! Both girls had a 2 hour lesson and did great! Andrew and I hadn't been skiing since before Alana was born. Andrew had fun. I had foot/boot problems and only did one run. I don't know if it is my overweightness or what but my left toes cramped horribly. I was close to tears working my way down. I tried a bigger boot and it did the same, so I stopped. I still had fun watching the girls though.
The girls were practicing on a little slope. Kathryn had decided they were going to have a race and she was going to win! Alana came down first, threw her skis off and went running over to Kathryn. She then came back yelling KATHRYNS BLEEDING!!!!!! I hurried over to her and saw blood running down her chin. She had run into a guy carrying a snowboard! I took her over to the Ski Patrol while Alana waited for Andrew. They cleaned her up and advised us to see our own doctor since it needed more than just a butterfly. Kathryn was so brave! She ended up getting 6-7 stitches right below her lip. The doctor was hoping he could use that new superglue type stuff, but it was too deep. He actually checked to make sure it didn't go all the way through to her mouth. She gets the stitches out on Saturday. He said it will leave a scar, but there was no way around it.

Ahhh. That is too bad. Bless her heart, she looks so pitiful in that picture. But, she will have a great story to tell.

Oh,
I taught all my kids how to ski, and I always have trouble with the boots. I wear a size 8 1/2, but when I ski I have to get a ten to fit my calf muscles.

I know kids really like snow-boarding, all my kids have tried it, but they say it is such a pain, getting off the lift, cause you have to sit down and strap your other foot in.

All my kids ski with cub skies. They are about 1/3 the size of regular skis's, they all get do more tricks with them, circles, jumps, etc.

I hope your little girl feels better.

Kathryn says Thank You to all of you!
She's being good about it. She doesn't open her mouth very wide when she talks or eats, so she sounds muffled. She's cute when eating because she has to think of something to eat where she doesn't have to open her mouth wide! She did tell me she looks like a monster though. I assured her she didn't, that it actually looked like a Tigger stripe!

Did the doctor recommend anything to put on the stitches to minimize the scar? She looks so sad!!!

I hate to ask, and Im not trying to start a debate, but did she have a helmet on?

Hope she's healing well, and the scar is minimal

This is Caropooh's DH.

No she didn't have a helmet on. We didn't think she would need one for her first time, since they didn't go on a chair lift.

Look at that sad little face. :grouphug:

My DD has a scar below her lip from stitches she needed when she was 3 years old. It's not very noticeable, but it's there. You may want to try Mederma to minimize it.

Oh - the poor little girl! At least she has a great story to go with the scar. Tell her to hang in there!

She told me earlier that tomorrow is going to be an exciting day! She gets the stitches out!
In response to the question about the helmet (even though DH answered), in hindsight a helmet maybe would of been a good idea. But in this case, it wouldn't have prevented the collision and cut.

Oh my, Carolyn, Kathryn's eyes tell the story. I do hope she is feeling better, and maybe tomorrow let's see a picture with a BIG smile. :)

No stitches out for Kathryn yesterday. They are now coming out on Monday. We went to the Urgent Care for our medical group yesterday. Before we were even called into a room the nurse came out and talked to us. She had looked over the chart notes and consulted with the doctor. Stitches are supposed to stay in for 5 days and yesterday would of only been 4 days. So they are still in and back we go tomorrow. Kathryn was all right with it.

To help the skin heal cleanly and minimize the scar, you might try applying Vitamin E (liquid form) to it regularly. Also, for a couple of years after DS's facial stitches were out our Ped constantly reminded us to put good sunscreen on it when out in the sun. Apparently the new skin is very sensitive and burns easily...
