Pool view...why?

Just wondering...why is a pool view so desirable?
When we stayed at HR in 2001 we had a lower priced garden view and it was lovely. When we opened the huge window drapes in the morning, everything was green and the sun shone right in. It felt so private.
When we were in the pool and I saw people looking out their pool view windows, I thought why would someone pay extra for this? Is there another reason besides being able to watch people in the pool? Is it because the pool area itself is pretty with the palm trees? I'm really curious!

I know the pool view deluxe rooms are bigger than a reg room with a seperate tub and shower.

I think the single biggest reason that pool view is more "desirable" as a view is curiosity. The pool is the central focus of the hotel. It is currently one of the largest pool's for any hotel in Orlando with one of the longest water slides. It is also the main area for any activities to occur at the hotel. (i.e.: Dive In Movie) People being the curious types they are, like to look to see what other people are doing and the pool is where all the action is. Of course, the possibility of having a view of the park is nice as well.

I have stayed in both pool view and garden view at the HRH and actually prefer the garden view. If the rooms had balconies it might be different, but it's not like you can sit outside your room and enjoy the view of the pool. When we were in the pool view room, we could hear the bass from the music at the pool in our room, and didn't really have a clear view of the pool.

Y'know, Aisling, that's a really interesting question. I suppose it goes back to the three keys of real estate: location, location, and location.

It also has something to do with marketing. Higher price equals better room in some people's minds I suppose.

But at a place like Universal Orlando, who spends that much time in their room anyway? The classic travel agent's reply to people who are hesitating about taking a cruise because the cabins are so cramped is, "You'll hardly be in your room at all, except to sleep!"

So I guess you should count yourself lucky. If a pool view doesn't matter to you then think of all the money you'll save over the years! Over the course of a lifetime, that'll probably add up to a few "free" hotel stays.

What I've never understood is why folks pay extra for "water view" rooms in hotels/resorts with no balconies. Who's gonna stand inside their room and look out of the window at the water?

I've always found this most curious at places like the WDW moderates, for example.
