With all the talk about SSR pool being too small for the number of units, I was curious if anyone knows the size of the main pools at the DVC resorts?

get one is different.

I think OKW main pool is a little bigger - OKW also has 3 quiet pools.

SSR orginially would only have 2 quiet pools. I have heard that they have added one?

the quiet pool that SSR had that I saw - was definitely smaller than OKW (except for the one near building 55 - this is definite OKW smallest pool). I don't know if all SSR quiet pools will be this small or not.

OKW pools can sometimes be empty - I think they wanted SSR pools to be in use always!!!

BCV has the biggest main pool - because it is SALB.

I think the original poster is referring to the main pool.

I was at SSR in August. The main pool is very nice. But, after DVC made the decision to drastically expand the SSR project, it is very clear to me they will have a problem with this main pool as far as capacity. There will be way more people than this pool will be able to handle capacity wise in the hot summer months.

Frankly, even if they stuck with the original project, this pool was going to be too small.

When I was there is August, only a few builidngs were open and the pool was already a very popular spot. I think DVC needs to go back and either expand this pool....or better yet, build another one that is much larger. Unfortunately, I think with the building layouts, they could not expand on the current pool very easily.

Oh by the way, I think Storm-A-Long Bay (SAB) at BCV is about 3-acres.

Here are a couple of figures to chew on. SSR's pool is approximately 6400 square feet. That number is from something official--most likely either the POS or other DVC sales materials.

Now, according to allearsnet.com, the Luna Park pool at BW holds 190,000 gallons of water. Convert that to cubic feet and you get 25,399. If we assume an average depth of 3.5 to 4 feet, Luna Park would be between 6400-7200 square feet.

Of course that doesn't address the issue of pool-side deck space, which I would agree is much more pleantiful at BW.

It's always a sad day when I have to disagree with tjkraz :( . However, it's important to know that the pool at SSR is only 10 feet by 10 feet. And since one end needs to be kept clear for those coming down the slide, and the other end is zero-entry, there's only room for about, say, a dozen swimmers or so; and that's only if they are standing up, side-by-side.

So I can see why some people think that SSR's pool is too small....

Hey, Doc. Did I miss a smiley in there somewhere???

The main pool at SSR is much larger than 100 sq ft.

I can't remember the exact nature of the "6400 sq ft" figure, but I had it listed in the FAQ I put together last year. That means I either got it from the POS, an issue of the Member Clubhouse or other SSR sales materials.

So the Luna Park pool and the SSR pool are roughly the same size according to your numbers. The Luna Park pool serves both BWV guests and BI guests, correct? BWV has 383 units and BI has 378 for a total of 761 units. The last numbers I saw on SSR was that there would be 828 units. It looks like it is a little on the small side but not grossly off in size the way some have made it sound. Maybe we need to look at the decking size as well. I am not sure which one has more space.

It seems that way. And that tends to agree with my own observations from a week we stayed at BWV and visited SSR--they both looked roughly the same size to me.

However, there have been consistent reports of a lot of people at the SSR pool, to the point where guests are concened about future capacity issues. I suppose that could be because the pool is new. It could have to do with the pool rehab at OKW (hopping). It could just be that SSR owners tend to be on the younger end of the spectrum and are making greater use of the pool.

It's hard to tell what will happen in another year with more buildings open. I think that the resort should have adequate overall pool capacity to service the guests that want to swim. But the question is whether SSR will be satisfied shunting guests to the leisure pools, or if they will be more accommodating and toward guest preference for an additional full-featured pool complex.

It's kind of ironic that DVC/DVD chose to foot the bill for a slide addition at OKW, yet they seem to be resisting similar upgrades to SSR of which the current members appear to be supportive.
