So here goes -
I was cetainly trying to help everyone out by sharing what I thought was a good rate. I'm kind of a Disney novice - so pardon the newbie lapses in protocol.
After reading the recent threads I can see that I am being viewed as someone who really doesn't know what they are talking about, or at the least about to check into a hotel at which they have no reservation.
I just called Disney - Here is the deal.
Yes I'm in Poly GV Concierge (so I guess I won't be 'shocked'), yes my rate is $271.95/nt (tax included), yes I do appartently have an additional confirmed reservation at the Animal Kingdom Lodge Savannah view for $233.10 same dates (I'm waiting for my wife to get home, I suspect she made this reservation a while back?? but I will obviously need to cancel - Thanks for the reminder whoever called Disney to check on my reservations for me - I guess that's the price you pay for using a real name in here).
Anyway - When I called to make the reservation at the Poly - I remember the agent asking if I needed assistance with air or car rental. I replied no, and I think I mentioned that I am a commercial airline pilot, and we would be flying down for zero. I never asked if there were any discounts associated with my profession, but apparently there are and the agent simply took it upon himself to obtain the special rate and never communicated this fact to me. The person I just spoke with told me that I am getting an airline pilot discount, and that the code is *** (code edited out since it is not a public code) - but I guess that doesn't help the masses much unless you drive 757's for a living.
I hope this solves the mystery. My next message is one to Disney about its practice of divulging reservation information to parties other than those who are the rightful "owners."
I wish you all good luck in obtainiing a more favorable rate - Disney is a great place, but as much as I enjoy it - I have only visited a precious few places in the world that warrant a $500/night room rate - I remember one of my favorite trips to Disney was with my wife (then girlfriend) in 1992 - just graduated from college and paid $79/night at the Port Orleans - I thought I had died and gone to heaven. If it came down to ~ $500 for a "monorail," I think I'd head to one of those other very nice hotels for a better rate. No flames, just my $0.02.
