Hey Eveyone~ I'm leaving in 10 DAYS!! I'm so0o0 excited. We will be staying at the AKL for a week. We made reservations a while ago to go to the Polynesian Luau one night. I was wondering how the food was.. because I heard that it wasn't very good , but that the show was great! So if you have been there please tell me how it is! THANX:D

The show was good, but it's true- the food was not. In my opinion I wouldn't waste the money!!!!

Go for the show not the food. The show is great, the food is just okay. My kids and family enjoyed the show very much and found it was well worth it, but the food was a disappoinment.

There was a rice dish that I got seconds of, so it's not all bad. And the beer is included. The Volcano desert was cool, but you don't eat that part.

Enjoy it, we had a blast! We went February 2001. We are a family of 5. The kids' ages at the time were 2 1/2, 4 1/2 and 10. The 10- and 4-year-old had a blast. The 2-year-old would have, but he was strapped into the high chair. He's a runner so we didn't let him go too far that trip.

I guess I don't have as high expectations or something, because I liked the food at the Luau. So did everyone at our table! We had seconds and even ate all our desert. It was wonderful and we loved the show. You will have fun. Have a great trip.

Teri1,

I am with you. I may not have gone for just the food but I did not think the food was bad and the service was great, almost too good. They would not stop bringing food to us. This is what we had last July.

You start off with Tropical Appetizers (coconut banana bread and Pineapple was the selection in July 2001)

Then they bring you:
Lanai-roasted Chicken
Island Pork Ribs
Shrimp Fried Rice
Fresh Sauteed Vegetables
These selections are all you care to eat

The Polynesian Desert finishes up the selection (Pineapple cake as of July 2001)

Drinks that are available for free (all you can drink):
Budweiser
Budweiser Light
Red and White Wine
Soft Drinks
Milk
Lemonade
Coffee
Tea

Tropical and other alcoholic drinks were extra.

This was taken from my report right after we got back in July.

We went to the Luau that night. Cost was $47.80 each person (kids 3-11 are $24.81 each. I have heard reports of the food not being very good but I thought it was very good. You started off with coconut banana bread (as much as you want of all the food) and pineapple. Then you get drinks (beer, soda, tea or juice is free and mixed drinks were $6 and you keep the glass) then they brought out Island pork ribs, Lanai-roasted chicken, sautéed vegetables and shrimp rice. Later you get a pineapple cake desert. The show was like I remembered except the traditional costumes they use to wear were gone and they looked like they went shopping at the local surf shop. I recommend seeing it but it is not something you would go see every year.

In my opinion food and show were just o.k. Hoop de doo is better. DH would not go to the Luau again if his life depended on it. Still reminds me on occasion of what a waste he thought it was. Oh! well! To each his/her own.

Have fun!

I loved the food at the Luau. But then again I am used to that type of food because fiance's parents are from the Philippines and was similar to food his mom cooks. I liked everything except the vegetables but I don't like most vegatables anyway ;)

As a comparison I totally HATED the food at the Hoop Dee Doo Revue and most other people seem to like the food there. It was the worst food I had ever tasted at WDW or anywhere else for that matter. I think it is really just a personal preference and you shouldn't let comments keep you from trying it at least once so you can make up your own mind :)

Whether you like the food or not will probably depend on your tastes. Something I've learned on this board - for everything you like, someone else won't like it.

My experience with the Luau wasn't great, though. I was extremely sick afterward. I haven't heard of that happening to anyone else though, so I suspect I was just an anomaly.

That was well said Sandi. I know there are some things I have not liked at WDW but I am still glad I tried it so I could find out for my self. For every thing I do not like there are thousands of people who love it.

I have to agree with the 'go for the show not for the food' sentiment. YUCK!!!! We won't do it again but it was an experience.
