Both my family and my friends family are travelling to Disney together.

We have a magic kingdom view and they have a garden view, what is the likelihood of a request to be located in the same building being honored?

Pretty high likelihood. I'd suggest you both ask about it when you do check in just to be sure though.

should we both just request a particular building on the reservation and then again at online check in? Or just ask at front desk?

You should probably not make a room/building request. Just note on each reservation that you are traveling together.

I would link your reservations and have noted on both that you would like rooms in the same longhouse. This will up your chances as opposed to requesting a specific building.

Each of you need to note on your reservation that you are "traveling with" the other family (and their reservation number).

I can't see how to do that although I have just added my friends reservation to My Disney Experience along with my own one. Is that the same?

Each of you will need to cal Disney Reservation Center to do that.
