Why do so many of the photos have a red X on them?

Why do so many of the photos have a red X on them?

I think it's a DIS temporary glitch. Sometimes it shows up immediately after I post a photo but if I refresh the page a few times it disappears. And it also shows up in a few signatures for some reason. I've seen it off and on since the last major board update.
