Poly owner, Help me spend $20k-ish

Disney was in panic mode. 2007-2008 was a shoe shine boy giving stock tips warning. Some were telling people to buy DVC with 10% down payment, take the “free” (incentive stay at SSR). Then, foreclose on the contract. They were pointing out, it was cheaper than staying at a moderate (maybe they said value) resort with discounts available and you stayed at a deluxe”
A lot of of us closely watching the AI bubble think this environment looks awfully familiar.

Also, Disney is once again trying to sell a lot of points and there are major storm clouds on the upper middle class employment horizon.

It’s a hard decision. Poly is a fantastic resort! Going full-on Poly is a great strategy.

It might be good to review different strategies first:

With 250pts at Poly I’d be tempted to balance with 100-150pts at BW or BC. Kind of hedging your future options for if you would like to stay between EP/HS sometimes, or grow in to wanting the economical 2BRs on occasion. There’s still over 15 years to enjoy this location. It could also come in under your $20k budget. I like the idea of tucking away that saved money today, which could offset some cost to replacing those points down the line, while also leaving more options and room to pivot.

It’s not easy predicting the future of DVC, both our own preferences or what DVD adds. Could you ever see yourself interested if YC flipped some rooms to DVC or a new resort added to front of EP, etc? Would you like to have priority outside of Poly once in a while? Where would that be? Could you see your family interested/wanting EP/HS area some trips? Do you like the idea of accessing the lower point 2BRs in the future?

Of course there’s RIV, but with BWV prices coming down I’d take a look there too. Even BC. You give up those future years. The points do go farther though. BW or BC serve as a nice placeholder, where future you has an opportunity to re-access your preferences and priorities post 2040.

Eta - I should mention the BW/BC 2BR would likely use bank/borrow, which does complicate things to a degree. It would require more planning than holding all points at Poly.

On top of that boom, DVD added over 10 million points in 2008-2009 for sale thinking those good times would keep going. 2009, Kidani opened, then THV at SSR, August BLT opened, and later that year GCV opened.

Not surprising, Disney also saw major foreclosure crisis (more 2010-2011). Disney used a third party for financing prior to that crisis. That company stopped with DVC financing and Disney took over their own financing sometime in the 2009-2012 window. Tim at DVCNews posted something about it back then.

The BLT spring webcast incentive was as low as $91/pt for more points.

While BLT sounds great, I regret we didn’t choose GCV for $87/pt during the same sale. I believe some bought GCV for 85 or 83/pt direct. It was the first DL DVC and people didn’t know how well it would sell. Some experienced DVC owners from the 90s thought BLT 5.7 million points might sell out before the small GCV.

Resale stories from 2010-2012 make my direct prices look terrible. I recall someone posting they bought BWV resale for $25. They submitted a ton of offers until they found someone who accepted. Thing was there were thousands of sellers and not many buyers.
BWV resale for $25…. if you’re going to lose your house, then you can’t afford to wait for prices to recover…. and you definitely can’t afford the dues….

I guess it should be considered. But if I don't like one and like the other, I don't really care. That's because unless my life goes very seriously sideways in a hurry, I'm driving it into the ground one way or the other. I think a DVC purchase is probably in that same category. From where I sit, anyone thinking of a time horizon of less than ten years is probably at least as well off just renting.

Now, if you like both cars equally well, then maybe that matters a little more. But, for me, it is still pretty low on the list of Things That Matter.

Yes, completely agree….

Thank you everyone for taking the time to offer your input. So many good points and suggestions!

We want to buy direct so that we can use points wherever we want for the next 40 years. We are in this for the long game, but if we ever downsize our contracts, it will be our 50 Poly resale that goes first. We can see a case for resale points, especially BWV or BC, but after 2042 we would strongly prefer to have direct vs resale. So at WDW that really does leave it between Poly and RIV (CFW we can not justify owning although we'd love to stay there).

Our two favorite resorts are Poly and RIV. As a family of three, Poly longhouses have worked out great. And we've also stayed at BLT, RIV, BC, AUL, VB, AK, and SS. As our tween gets older it would be great to have options for larger accommodations, so our home resort of Poly adding those options seems like hitting the jackpot (well almost). It seems to make sense to add on to Poly so we have the option to stay at studios or larger and then if we want to try to switch at seven months we can. If we get "stuck" at Poly we will always be happy.

Since we love RIV too it would be great to have home resort advantage for RIV studios. But we'd be okay with preferred view if standard is not open. The RIV one bedrooms are gorgeous (we've stayed in one) but the shower situation is actually better in a RIV studio so the Poly longhouse studio or one-bedroom is better for us. RIV two bedrooms would be amazing but we would not need them unless maybe our kid's friends were travelling with us. It is expensive to buy Poly but we are already in for 250 points and don't need to add much to really expand our options. We wonder if adding on at RIV for studios would eventually encourage us to buy even more points than we would if we just added on to our existing Poly. From a practical perspective it seems to make more sense to add to Poly. It would be easier to manage all points at the same resort. There is some RIV FOMO, however. But I think we can switch into RIV enough to make us happy. And, we enjoy staying at all DVC properties.

And as foolish as this may be... we want this to be the last time we add on! :)

Thanks again!
Niiice!

Somehow I missed that they put 2 baths in the 1 BR and 3 in the 2 BR, like at Bay Lake and Kidani. Suddenly this is much more interesting!
Yes, It was a shock when we were there in November and did the tour. They really should promote that a little more for sales purposes. We were dead set on a CCV add on but while touring the 1bdrm at CCV the guide showing us the room told us about the 2 bathrooms at Poly. We toured there a few hours later and the 2nd bathroom sold us and especially DD.

Yes this is a great move. 1BRs interest us but the single bathroom is a dealbreaker. So happy they decided to add the second for Tower 1BR 😁 Now if I could just find availability at 7m lol!

Working in IT for far too long, I understand the concern. No clue what happens, but right now so much money is thrown into it that it’s closer to dot com for me. My concern is more if it really does what people think it will…millions may lose jobs and need to be retrained.

I’m in the 2025 will be fine camp…just because FOMO. 2026 second half scare me.

As toddler parents, curious what makes the 2nd bathroom so appealing when toddler->teen? Shall I get prepared early

A big wooow after reading your post. Wondering why 2026 H2 (and shall I scoop dvc resales then (kidding))?

More toilet trained people and kids who shower or bathe themselves means more people using toilets and showers or baths.

The third bathroom helps with privacy in the two bedrooms (just as the second bathroom improves privacy in the 1 bedroom). It’s like having a bathroom for each sleeping area, so the person sleeping in a different area isn’t barging into shared bathroom space in the main sleeping area during the night.

So far we're fine with a 1B/one split bathroom at Riviera, but I wake up super early and get my day rolling, then the kids, then DH. We don't usually rope drop anymore, either, and I think that's the main issue; showering, hair, makeup, toileting, to be on the bus/monorail/skyliner/boat for 7 a.m.-type days. The 1B is very spacious with countertops though to spread out makeup, etc., and we apply sunblock on the balcony to each other in our bathing suits.

Just curious, but why is that?
Because a lot of the flower topiaries and such are in the Future World side of Epcot. For some reason I just like walking through the front of Epcot during the Flower & Garden Festival. Also the grounds of the Polynesian are very beautiful in the spring and just adds to the whole festivity. It’s an easy hop over to the TTC to get the monorail. Oh, and in the spring the weather is warm enough that I want to make good use of Poly’s Dole Whip station. :-)

Normally, though, I MUCH prefer entering Epcot via the World Showcase.

How is the shower situation better in a RIV studio (better than a RIV 1-bedroom)?
