Well, to be fair, there never was any-such-thing as "common" sense. Common sense is a myth invented by people who want to project the idea that their own personal perspective should actually be shared by everyone else. If there was such thing as common sense, then there would be no disagreements, no conflicts and no arguments of any significance. Rather, each person has their own sense, cultivated by their knowledge, beliefs and experiences. Shared knowledge, shared beliefs and shared experiences help cultivate some cliques, within which people share a "common" sense, but that perspective is still specific to that clique of individuals.
You are correct, however, that the objections to political correctness require significant scrutiny. How much is it simply that people don't want to be put in the position of having to show respect for other people's beliefs? It's hard to know.
