Crescendo implies that it has reached its peak.... sadly I really doubt thats the case.

If DOug Brinkley is such a scholar, why can't he use of the word crescendo correctly? It only implies a peak, because its meaning has been abused for such a long time.

Although citational evidence over time attests to widespread currency of use, it is difficult for anyone acquainted with the technical musical sense of crescendo to use it to mean “a peak.”

CRITICISM OF BUSH DOES NOT EQUAL LACK OF SUPPORT FOR OUR TROOPS !!!!!!!!!

Whew....Thanks...I feel much better now :teeth:

Thank you, wvrevy! This is a huge pet peeve of mine as well.

You're right...some of us do find those kinds of "expressions of faith" to be offensive...just as I find any other kind of stupidity offensive...

When I referred to "athletes sharing their faith" I was thinking more of those accept opportunities to do so off the field. Opportunities they would not have if not for their celebrity.

I guess I'm not opposed to on-the-field expressions, but I fear that many of the players who drop to a knee in the end zone or point to heaven after a home run are as concerned with image enhancement as they are glorifying God. That kind of hypocrisy bothers anyone.

I wish we could be as offended by Whoopi's stupidity as we are by the stupidity of the hypocritical athlete.

Completing your research for you:

1a. Times CNN's web site mentioned Miller's comments: 0

1b. Times CNN's web site mentioned Whoopi's comments (even if they didn't quote them): 4 (so far)

Can you provide the link that mentions Miller's comments? Can you even find a link?

I did a search on google for everyone. I placed in the search box {"dennis miller" gay} on the hope that one web site, just one would have a story or just a mention of these comments you speak of above.

I found zero (0) sites that did mention this. This includes the Cresent News Network's site (which I placed a search on in and of itself).

In contrast, CNN ran a couple of stories on the DNC fundraiser and mentioned Whoopi's comments. The most damaging quote one could find from these stories was:

"Topping it off, Goldberg used Bush's surname as a sexual reference."

Hmmmm, why are the liberals ignoring Miller's comments and not Whoopi's?

That would be the same group that saw pictures of naked Iraqi's and called it a "fraternity stunt"

And after disgracing themselves by comparing prisoner abuse to a fraternity stunt, they have the nerve to be outraged by someone's words ! Isn't anyone else disgusted with the blatant hypocrisy?

Yes, especially when the blatant hypocrisy is practiced by all sides. It's becoming absurd. But it is an election year and this is politics 2004. :( I'm afraid it will only get worse and non-stop until after Nov. 2nd. Welcome to the new hell-in-America.

Chance of hypocrisy from the right: 100% ::yes::

Finally realizing that hypocrisy comes from both sides and is sometimes practiced without acknowledging it: priceless

And as far as I know, liberals aren't ignoring Miller's comments--the media is. So much for that good ole "liberal media" theory, eh?
Or maybe it's just easier to make news from Whoopi than it is from Dennis. Dennis was not the only one to make the "gay lovers" or "metrosexual" comment about the Kerry-Edwards team. The Sludge ... I mean, Drudge Report did an photo montage on it. Other talk shows picked up on the theme.

Maybe it's just not PC to report on people making light of "gay love", while it is PC to report on people making light of a person's name or women's anatomy. :confused3

Here is what Miller said:
"Those two cannot keep their hands off each other, can they?" Miller said. "I think I have a new idea for a new campaign slogan -- use the bumper sticker 'Hey, Get A Room.' "

Here's a description of what Whoopi said:
The New York Post described Goldberg's shtick this way: "Waving a bottle of wine, she fired off a stream of vulgar sexual wordplays on Bush's name in a riff about female genitalia."

Furthermore, Kerry is reported to have approved of Whoopi's remarks by calling the participants the "heart and soul of America".

Whoopi's comments are more newsworthy because they were far more offensive and Kerry seems to agree with Whoopi.

This is all a minor issue though, if you ask me. A more serious case of double standards is the media blackout of the section of the Butler report that vindicates Bush on the so-called "lie" in the state of the union.

Did Kerry say all the representatives were the heart and soul of America before or after Whoopi did her "presentation"

So... Why have both sides become so uncivil? I've not spoken to one person, either Republican or Democrat, that likes the nastiness. I assume someone must respond to the negative ads.

I have no use for the Bush Administration but I do not like mud-slinging in the least. However, the truth is the truth, if its reality and the other "team" is able to point out a truth that they think will help their side than by all means....

As far as Whoopi goes, does anyone think this is the first time(or last for that matter) that someone has referred to Bush's name in that manner?

As for Dennis, he too is a comedian in his own right. I think that what he said was extremely stupid. Referring to Kerry and Edwards as gay lovers is not PC at all. It offends people on a more personal level

As far as people thanking God for the good stuff that happens to them....so what? If that makes them happy then so be it but if someone else praises a different higher power than others shouldn't be offended by that either.

I think the celebrities can say anything they want (we do allow freedom of speech in our country). However, they have to be ready to suffer the consequences of their actions if people who do not agree with their message decide to boycott their movies/music, etc....

Look at the Dixie Chicks , their record sales have been way down since NM spoke out against Bush. Where are Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn this year? Maybe they decided they'd rather have more money in their pockets than speak out politically.

IMO, Slimfast had the right to drop Whoopie from their marketing campaign if they think her behavior (or political views) will hurt the sale of their products. It's all about the money to them.

Is it because neither side could win focussing only on their positives? I hate big election years! Not only does everyone act like a first grader, but they don't even act like the good first graders!

I agree with the folks who have said that celebs have a right to their opinions, but there are sometimes consequences for decaring them loud and often.

Here's the original story from the Green Bay newspaper:
Newton, Miller Entertain at Rally
The salient quote is here:

And he [Miller] joked about the penchant for back-slapping and hugs in the Democratic ticket. "Those two cannot keep their hands off each other," he said. "Maybe they should use the bumper sticker 'Hey, get a room.'"

That's the "damaging" quote ? :rotfl: I've been referring to the president as a (insert VP's given name here) for quite a while...Didn't know it was quite so "damaging" :rotfl:
