Polish Food

Considering I live in Pulaski, WI and our school mascot is a caricature of Casimir Pulaski himself, I'd say yep, very high Polish population. Our local bakery (Smurawa's) serves lots of Polish food, besides Paczkis. As a matter of fact, Paczki day is coming up! Every year on fat Tuesday, the bakery has people from all over coming to get their paczkis. One of the news stations is always on hand to document the craze. Our town's big celebration is Polka Days every year in July. It's a 4 day festival where Polka bands from all over the country come to play. Polish food, parades, games, rides, etc. I personally love pierogi, but pretty much only eat it during Polka Days. Yep, I live a in Polish area (I'm only Polish by marriage!)

I dearly love paczkis. But only certain kinds. I like the custard filled paczkis with no frosting. Glaze is ok but no frosting. It's just too much.[/QUOTE]

noun, plural paczki. (paczek is the singular - One paczek, two paczki).
1.
a traditional Polish doughnut, filled with jam or another sweet filling and covered with powdered sugar or icing.

I probably only had fake kielbasa, such as Hillshire Farms from the supermarket, not the real thing.

I'm not aware of any Polish restaurants or delis, but I'm sure there must be at least one in the Baltimore area or surrounding suburbs.

The local Safeway sells refrigerated pierogis, much better than those Mrs. T's or Poppi's frozen ones which are made of dehydrated potato flakes.

Paczkis for Fat Tuesday are a real treat!!

I'll be in Poland in a few weeks and looking forward to trying some, but I suspect they just call it "food" over there! :)

This thread is the best! We just moved to a new neighborhood, and haven't really figured out the local food options. After reading this, I googled Polish food and my city. Turns out in the whole metro area, there are 2 Polish places, one of which is less than 1/2 a mile away. I might walk the dog over there this afternoon and pick up pierogies for dinner! I've only had the pierogies from Mrs. T, so I'm assuming I'm in for a treat.

How do you all cook your pierogies? What else should I buy?

ETA: It's a deli, not a restaurant, so I'll be bringing the pierogies home to cook here.

We have an area called Polish Acres, but other than a bar, I don't think we have any type of polish restaurants. We do have Pazcki in the grocery stores, but I doubt its as good as it would be from a bakery.

I guess there isn't a very big polish population in most of the US it appears.

I just did a Google search and it came up with 3 polish restaurants in Los Angeles. The closest one is 70 miles from me, nothing in San Diego at all. There is a Pierogi food truck that's delicious though.

Within 10 minutes of me there is a Polish Cultural Center and store, even a travel agency. I am polish and can cook pretty good polish food so we don't suffer but it is nice to go somewhere to eat someone else's cooking. If you are near Troy, MI look up the Polish Cultural Center - they are a banquet hall and a restaurant. Looking forward to Fat Tuesday coming up! My mom used to go to Hamtramak, MI to get them - yum!

I pan fry and serve with sour cream!

I'm Polish and love Polish food but unfortunately there are no Polish restaurants or delis in our area so we have to make everything ourselves.

I was just going to post this, except the part about being Polish, since I am Italian. We must be neighbors

I pan fry and serve with sour cream!

Do you boil them before you pan fry? Do you use butter or oil? Do you have a favorite type to buy?

The sour cream is like a sauce for them? I tend to substitute nonfat plain Greek yogurt for sour cream a lot, and I have that in the house right now. Do you think that would work as a substitute here?

Sorry, I am a really inexperienced cook!

Most people pan saute pierogies.

Sounds like we are neighbors :-)

All kinds of polish markets going up in the area as well - Sterling Heights and Macomb. People love their pierogi's!

Cook them in a little bit of oil with some onions and serve them with butter and sour cream. I like them just with butter.

This city was settled by Germans ("the Pennsylvania Dutch") in 1742. We have some German cuisine that mimics Polish. Pierogies, for example.

See tippeecanoe's post for instructions as that's exactly how I cook them.

I use oil to sauté, and if I can't get to the German market nearby I just use Mrs T's pierogie a, although I'm going to try making my own at some point.

and I'm pretty sure it would work as a substitute although I've never tried! It's like a sauce? More like a dipping sauce. You don't have to include it if you don't want. My mom sometimes made it with apple sauce but that was only if we were also having potato pancakes.

There's no polish food around here, just grocery store keilbasa which my grandmother used to put in spaghetti (and man is that good!). I've always wanted to try more of it. I wanted to hit the Poland booth at Food & Wine Festival, but the reviews on the pierogie were basically that they were frozen quality, though I don't think you can even buy frozen pierogie around here at all. I've never seen them anyway.

Is it very popular where you live?
I grew up in a city that had a very large polish population. Lots of weddings and events the meal was polish buffets. Restaurants served polish buffets, etc.

Now I moved two hours south and I cannot find anywhere that serves polish food! When I ask around, I get asked what a polish buffet even is.

I don't even dare ask them if they know what a paczki is, haha.

We used to have paczkis at the office on Fat Tuesday when I lived/South Bend, Indiana. That seems like a different life ago.

Anyway, have been in Atlanta for over a decade and have never seen one anywhere!
