Polish Food

The local Shop Rite supermarket has a small section of Polish and other Eastern European non-perishable foods. Sauerkraut and vegetable salads in jars, pickles, tea bags, cookies, candy and other sweets, a few canned goods, bottled mineral water.

They also have one brand of kielbasa that seems authentic, and some refrigerated pierogis from someplace in North Jersey.

And they load up on Paczkis starting about two weeks before Ash Wednesday.

The Columbus Farmers Market has Wojciechowski's Bologna Kitchen, a deli/bakery. Despite the name, it's mostly German with some Polish foods as well. Plus they sell Bavarian cuckoo clocks.

There are a few polish neighborhoods around with markets and restaurants. Dh is 100% polish so I get kielbasa, sauerkraut and pierogies every once in a while. I don't care for any of it but dh and dd love it. I treat myself to sushi on polish night.

I don't know about catering or buffet places but like I said I'm not a fan of polish food.

You will be when I invite you over the next time I make kielbasa sushi. ;)

I put kielbasa in stir-fries, or Pad Thai, and other fusion dishes.

I live in a heavily-populated Portuguese are and we have one Polish restaurant. I've been there a few times and the food is pretty good. You can get pretty much any possible flavor of pierogi (even one stuffed with Portuguese chourico lol) including dessert pierogi. They've been featured on Dine Ins, Diners ans Dives as well. But it's a nice change in a city that has a ton of Portuguese restaurants (I'm half Portuguese and don't even really like the food, so I never go to those restaurants).

Anyone here eat cucumbers and sour cream? That is about the only Polish thing we make now.

My mom of course makes other stuff. She finally found a store here that has good keilbasa.

I live in Pulaski County - but it's in Arkansas so no Polish food here. I was in heaven a few years ago when I stayed in a suburb of Chicago - the grocery store and the bakery were just wonderful. But I didn't know what half the packaged items were in the grocery store as I can't read Polish.

Is it very popular where you live?
I grew up in a city that had a very large polish population. Lots of weddings and events the meal was polish buffets. Restaurants served polish buffets, etc.

Now I moved two hours south and I cannot find anywhere that serves polish food! When I ask around, I get asked what a polish buffet even is.

I don't even dare ask them if they know what a paczki is, haha.

We have one place locally. I am intrigued to try it out. Not sure if I could convince my husband. It appears to be table service only, not a buffet. Looks fancy actually. Happened upon it when I stopped at a different store one day.

Pierogies are somewhat common in Jewish cuisine as well, though often using the Yiddish plural, pierogen. I'll boil or even microwave to save on fat and cleanup. Microwaving isn't nearly as good, but it meets my needs.

My husbands grandparents came here from Poland. We named my son Cass as a shortened version of my DHs grandpa Casimir. There was some confusion as his name on his birth certificate and social security card were spelled different so when we decided to name our son we just went with the nickname.

We have a few Polish restaurants about 1/2 hour from us, but my husband grew up in Sterling Heights, MI. Most of his family still lives over there. We get lots of Polish foods when we visit them. I made pierogie from scratch one time for my DH. They turned out great, but it was way too much work. The ones from the Polish cultural center are great and freeze well. As for Paczki, they are all over right now. In grocery stores and bakeries. I love the fruit filled ones.
