Well as the wife of a fireman ::yes:: I think we need a discount .

I also think that we know that our husbands choose to do this line of work . But I think evryone would agree that they are better off because of thier choice.

Do you know when you tell your DH goodbye when he leave for work that he is coming home when he is done?

Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes!!! I think firepeople and police people should be given a discount!! They put their lives on the line every day for us!!!! I am a teacher and I would gladly trade my Swan/Dolphin discount to give it to the men and women who make this world a little more safe for my children!! I definitly think Disney should think about doing this!!

Just a reminder, police and fire personnel ARE eligible for the government rate at the Swan/Dolphin. As long as they receive a paycheck from a "local/state/federal government", they qualify. We know several cops who have used the discount.

TDC Nala, great post!

TDC Nala, great post!

well, gee, that's great. I don't think I fully understood that. Is it comparable to the armed forces discount?

Kendra,

I'm really not sure how it compares. I *think* the military dscount is better, but I' m really not sure. This is more comparable to the teachers discount. We've tried it once or twice and weren't able to get the discount since they were sold out of rooms with the rates, usually at busy times. You have to call real early for them and it's better to call the Swan/Dolphin directly rather than the Starwood 1-800 number.

Hi Everyone. Things heated up here while I was gone! As clarification, ALL gov workers, including cops and fireman are eligible for the discount at the WDW Swan and Dolphin. We've used it. $149/night for a standard room. If you want the discount, the best way is to call starwood direct and ask for the government rates.

I just want to add a couple of facts.
1. 90% of cops are in rural towns where big OT bucks are just a dream
2. Both times during my pregnancies I got sick and couldn't work. My DH worked full time (at the time he was a seargant) at a rural PD (population 15,000). We qualified for public assistance without my income. (TG it was temporary use of the system)
3. I know many military families that are on or eligible for public assistance.

I agree that cops and firefighters put their lives on the line: not every day, but every once in a great while (at least in the town that I live in). They are also compensated with great hours (24 on 48 off) and great overtime capabilities.

After 911 when people were clamoring to contribute to the Firefighters Memorial Fund, I noticed that there was not an extra fund for the soldiers who were dying. Did you know that the widows of soldiers are kicked out of military housing almost immediately after the death of their spouse? Ah, well, at least they get a Disney Discount.

So, while I respect the work that firefighters and cops do, and while I thank them for their work, it is still a volunteer civil job and they should not have any more discounts than any other civilian.

Ok, ITA that they do not deserve their own discount and have said so previously in this thread. BUT, do not believe for a second that my DH is only putting his life on the line "every once in a great while". Maybe this is true where you live but it certainly isn't here. DH has been in MANY high risk events in the past several months alone. One that sticks out is a 14 year old who stole a car tried to run DH over with that car. He also was sent to the scene of a domestic incident where when he arrived he found the son with a knife behind his back. The son tried to kill his step father and his mother was trying to cover it up. Every night he goes to work, we don't know if he'll come home.

Maybe I'm a little more sensitive to this right now since 2 NYPD cops were killed this weekend. One left behind a daughter and the other left a wife and 3 young kids.

Getting off my soapbox now....

I am sorry. I didn't mean to get your gander up. I believe that your husband does put his life on the line every day, especially if he is a cop in a big city. heck, I'd even go so far as to say cops in big cities really are soldiers and deserve a military discount;) .

Now, the cops in my city experience violent crime maybe once every few months. They were investigated and found to have cheated the city off of overtime by calling in sick one day, then working an unscheduled day and getting paid double time for it.

If I get elected President, I will give everyone free admission to Disney once a year!

Royalbear for President! [

I kinda forgot about this thread but since it has been brought back to life I will just say ....

My DH is Fireman .He is danger everyday that he puts that uniform on . He has almost been killed helping someone on the side of the road because someone else was not paying attention.
To say that they get 48 hours off and that is great hours makes me laugh . Almost all Fireman have other jobs they work because they pay is not that great . Being a Fireman, Paramedic , Police officer is a calling because the money is never as great as the risk .
To be honest with you I would not be a Fireman for all the money in the world! I dont want to scrape dead bodies off the road , I dont wanna smell people who are burned , i dont want to look at a woman who is holding her child who was not in a car seat and screaming "Help my baby" , I dont want to help deal wih the person who shot himself in the face because he didnt want to live ... I could go on and on ..... but next time you are in danger or your house is on fire make sure you mention that you think that they really have a nice cushion job ... with plenty of time off :teeth: I know they will love to hear all about it

They don't have to do it. They could choose to do another job.

That being said, I believe all firemen and policemen should be respected for the service they do. I am a nurse and I know what it is like to be in the trenches of human suffering. However, I don't think we should expect Disney to give them discounts.

I didn't read all the 75 posts, but I can say this, I am a firefighter/medic. I am under paid, but I make enough to have plenty and pay my bills, my pt job helps too. dw sahm. I have to add this though, would I use a discount, yes I would, would I ask for one, no I would not. See we have a few buisnesses where I live that do the discount for police and fire, to them THANKS, you don't have to but you do. Second, we have lost these discounts in some places because even police and fire are a bit greedy sometimes and abuse the privilage of the discount. Maybe you are not aware, but Disney did a discount or free admit to ALL firefighters, police and military who were involved on or after 9-11 in a rescue/recovery at the WTC or Pentagon. My hats off to Disney for that. I am also very grateful that the majority of vote are in favore of it, but do we need it, no(I'd like it though LOL). One thing I am going to open up a can o' worms on is this, Royalbear said we don't have to do it and that they know what it is like in the trenches of human suffering is life.....
Well first, I could have been a (insert any job here) ______, but I would not get the satisfaction I get doing what I do. (here is the can o' worms part snicker snicker) I have met very few RN's that actually have a clue what we do in the field. Do they see stuff in the ER that is bad, yep, they do, but there is a problem when the RN's yell at the firefighters/medics/emt's for not having people cleaned up!!! Oh by the way that car wreck was in the middle of a soybean field and it is raining.... The car was down a 100' hill into a creek. I am sorry the Patient is throwing up blood everywhere.... My point is this I feel that EVERY RN should have to ride out with an Ambulance crew prior to becoming an RN and every ER/ICU/Critical care RN have to do at least 16 hrs a year in an ambulance just to see and remember. Do RN's provide a great service YES THEY DO. Do they need to understand that real life isn't life in the office, ER or the floor they are on, YES THEY DO. One other thing is this, as taxpayers, you can(should be able to) ride out with your fire/ems units in your town, just sign a waiver and you are in, go see what life is like at the Firehouse, sure we love it, but go one your first run and see what we see. God Bless America!!!!!!!!

Look, I have the utmost respect for all firemen and policemen. As in all professions, there are good and bad, honest and cheats--I think for the most part more honest and good. I don't want their jobs and I know that they have to put up with horrible things all of the time (except in my city, where it really is very rarely--even so, it's better them than me). Yet they do choose their jobs.

I chose to join the army to get my schooling paid for. That means I chose to go to the Gulf War (the first one) and Somalia and see the horrible things that happened there. Believe me, even as a nurse I saw some horrible stuff--but you are right, not quite the same way as a cop or firefighter would. But hey, I chose it and I didn't whine asking to get out or saying it was too icky for me or expect special priveleges for it--I was serving my country and that was an honor all in itself.

My point is, really, that no one should expect a discount anywhere because of the job that they do. I didn't take advantage of the military discounts at Disney while I was in the military, because quite frankly, spending my disposable income at Disney was not my thing (I have since seen the errors in my ways):teeth: . I have taken advantage of other military benefits such as the commissary and PX, but if those weren't there, I wouldn't necessarily ask for them. If Disney decided to discount firemen and policemen, I wouldn't protest it, I would say good for them. If they discounted nurses, I would take advantage of the opportunity.

So, I love firemen and policemen. I love soldiers. I love teachers. They are all special. ::yes::

just wanted to add this after 9/11 disney offered a great discount for fdny, ems, and nypd in nyc i was'nt able to go due to we just had a baby he was one year old,but alot of the guys i work with did it was the whole month of april 2002 if i remember right all you had to do was pay for the hotels, addmission to all the parks was free and if you stayed on site they gave you a break too,no one asked disney for this one day a fax was sent to fdny, ems, nypd headquaters about the deal i thought it was really nice of them, they keep the media out of it kinda did it quietly it was hard here we(fdny) took a big hit and were having a hard time dealing with it.then disney showed up with this deal for us and the families of lost ones it helped so much. anyway thx disney so much and i think they should give a break to any fire, police, ems members of service just my opinion

I am a Law Enforcement Proffesional and I sincerely hope no Nurses in my area feel as you do.

Quote: They don't have to do it. They could choose to do another job.

To what degree do your trenches challenge you? A clean and organized ER or OR is not the same as the east bound lane of a closed Interstate with backed up traffic staring you down. It's just you and a near fatality on the road. This may not be what you envision as trenches, but to say well you chose your job is disrespectful. It isn't about asking for a Disney discount, this post was started by a family member of a Law Enforcement Professional, not a Police Officer or a Fireman. Nothing against any other civil servant, but once you take the oath everyday carries a reponsibility and a threat level that you have on or off duty. Ask any Police Officer if he doesn't have a so called radar about him in every situation no matter how trivial.

A discount would be nice but it's not owed to us.
