Hi,

I'm a potiential DVC owner. We are planning to buy 300 points. I think it's too much. I don't think we will use all 300 points in one year. If I don't use the points for the year, what will happen? I know that you can bank it for the next year. But what if I still don't use all of them the next year? Are they going to expire? thanks.

Yes, you can "bank" the unused for points. Here's a nice explanation from the allearsnet.com board:

What are "Banking" and "Borrowing"?

The policy of the DVC is to let you "bank" any unused vacation points into the upcoming use year or "borrow" points from the next use year. No more than three years of points can be combined at any one time. There are time limits on when banking is allowed, and once banked or borrowed, points cannot be returned to their original use year.

Example 1: Your use year is February 2004. You would like to book your vacation for December 2003 using more points than you have available in your 2003 use year. You may borrow up to 100% of your February 2004 points for the December 2003 vacation (but you will then not have any points available for your February 2004 use year).

Example 2: You are planning a big family reunion in August 2005 and want to reserve a grand villa, using more points than will be available in your contract. You may bank up to 100% of any unused points from the 2004 use year into your 2005 use year for this purpose.

Yes. If you don't use banked points they do expire. They cannot be banked into the year after, though you can use them, and bank your current-year points. What you cannot do is bank more points than your annual allocation.

If you don't use all 300 pts this year, you bank the unused pts into next year. When next year comes, you use your banked pts first before your current pts. If you decide not to take a vacation that year, you can only bank your current year's pts. The pts that were already banked will be lost at the end of the year if you don't do something with them. Either you rent out those points, or you must take a vacation somewhere in order to avoid losing those banked points. I don't want to burst your bubble, but no one here routinely has a large amount of pts left over from year to year. I have over 900, and I am still in a borrowing mode on some of my contracts. It just seems to happen that your vacation expectations expand to the very edges of the pts you have available, no matter how many pts you own. ;)
