We bought just the 160 base points but in the near future we are looking to buy probably 100 more points when they have a sale.

when do these sales usually happen and how much of a sale is it usually?

I am not sure what you mean by sale. Are you talking direct through Disney?

Disney routinely offers incentives for members to add on more points. Those incentives are year round and can vary by resort and time period.

Depending on what resort you want will depend on what incentive is being offered. The easiest way to know is to contact your guide when you think you might be ready. You can also keep an eye on what Disney is doing through dvcnews.com. They usually have things pretty much up to date.

Now, you can also add on via the resale market and in most cases, even with 100 points, it is cheaper going this route than Disney.

Yeah, it's usually incentives for add on's. Right now I believe it is 2 annual passes for WDW and 2 for DL, pretty tempting for us, but not tempting enough ; )

You are probably already aware but be advised that you can also purchase points via resale. For example, The Timeshare Store, Inc.® receives new listings on a regular basis. When looking to buy more points you might compare buying them resale or from Disney and see which gives you the better deal.

Enjoy your membership.

The points directly from Disney will never go down. You might pick up something as part of the purchase, but you'll pay at least the best price they offer now. If you want a sale, purchase a resale.
