Point Rental Question - Confirmation of Reservation

Hi! I have a quick question regarding renting points and the renter's ability to confirm a reservation.

I know that typically, as the member, I will receive a written confirmation and will send/fax the renter a copy of the confirm for their records.

Is the renter able to call Member Services to independently confirm the reservation - if not, is there any other step that is usually performed so that the member can get comfort the reservation was made as requested before sending funds.

As always, thanks for your help!

I recently rented points, and I called member services to confirm. They will ask you for your member number, but you can tell them you just have a reservation number and they will confirm with you. Hopefully, the person you rented from gave you your reservation number?

Also, the DVC Member should make sure that the renters name is listed on the ressie, or MS may or may not confirm, depending on which CM they speak with.

The member controlls the reservation. When I have rented points I execute a simple lease with the renter paying half when they sign the lease. The balance is paid when I send the confirmation letter with their name listed.

Also, you can check with the Orange County Records to ensure the person is a DVC member.

Good luck!

What we do is gove the renter the 800 number to call and confirm teh reservation. When we get the reservation confirmation in the mail we photocopy it and send it out to the renter so they have a copy for their records.

Thanks everyone... I was hoping MS would be willing to confirm the reservation for the renter!

Hello all,

I was actually told the opposite by Member Services. I was trying to find out the proceedure for one of my renters (do send out the confirmation letter, but wanted them to be able to feel even more secure). Member Services said only the DVC Member can call in and check status with them.

However, once the reservation transfers over to the resort (just prior to visit), Member Services said the renter could call there and verify all was well. I guess it truly does depend on who you speak to. Sounds like no solid policy is really in place. My two cents though - renter should be able to call and check. I see no harm in that :D

Very interesting because our renters called the day after I gave them the confirmation number and phone number to check and they were given all the details on the reservation. I guess it just depends on who they get on the phone when they call.

It really depends on the CM who answers the phone at MS. I have a feeling that, for the privacy/security of members, CMs are not supposed to be allowed to talk to a non-member about a member's reservation. But it seems like MS is, as usual, being inconsistent enough that we can't really figure out what the actual policy is.

I have even heard of a situation where the renter is also a DVC member, but MS would not confirm the reservation/rental because they are not the member who booked the reservation.

I've read in the past here that DVC reservations get "downloaded" into the actual resort's systems much earlier than regular hotel reservations (some have said it happens almost immediately after the reservation is made). So for instance, if a renter rented a reservation at BWV, they should be able to call BWV's front desk directly and give the reservation# to confirm that the reservation exist.

As a renter (and member, our points just weren't available yet), I was able to call a number of times to confirm the reservation. I always gave my member # even though it was irrelevant to this reservation. I would have been very nervous if I hadn't been able to check the reservation myself!
