What happens to your points when you book a trip at 11 months out, at your home resort, then change it to another resort that is less points, at 7 months? Do my points go back into my account as unused points, that I can bank, or do I have to use them that year? For example...if I want a week at Saratoga Springs, in a studio, it's 97 points. My home is BC. If I call at the 11 months mark and reserve the studio at BC, then change it over to SS, at the 7 month mark, where do the points go? Or should I just wait until the 7 month mark and call? Thanks! :D

The points used for the cancelled reservation will be used for the 7 month reservation. If the points needed are the same, nothing will happen. If the points needed are less than the original reservation, they will be returned to the current Use Year to be used or banked. If more points are required, you can use other current points or borrow to make up the difference.

All banking/use provisions are subject to Use Year deadlines.

Enjoy!

Assuming you cancel the first reservation then schedule the second at the 7 month window, Doc's answer is correct. It can get more complicated in that if you are making reservations day by day or on by a wait list, the rules break down. Also, just because the points go back in your account, doesn't mean you'll be able to use or bank them, it would depend on your situation as well as your use year. Just remember there may be special situations that arise that you need to pay special attention to. Also, don't assume the CM will do the right thing by your points, always tell them things like use the banked/borrowed points first.

Your basic premise of booking at 11 months then changing to something else at 7 months is done all the time. That's one of the reasons many of use advocate buying at WDW even if you don't care which resort you own, assuming WDW trips are your goal.

Well...now I'm a little confused! lol I got 150 points this October. Here's what I would like to do for upcoming trips....well, I already booked the first trip...

June 13-17, 2004...BCV...2BR...200 points

Oct. 16-22, 2004...SS...studio...97 points

May 1-5, 2005.....VWL... studio....65 points

Oct. 16-21, 2005....BCV...studio...83 points

I had to borrow 50 points from next year for the June trip, leaving me with 100 points that I can use for the second trip listed, right? If I have to borrow 9 points for that trip (since I'll have to book at BCV at the 11 month mark, than change to SS at the 7 month mark) when I (and if) I can change to SS, I'll have 12 points to bank. For the May trip, I'll have to borrow from my October 2005 allotment of 150 points, then for the last October trip, use 83 points for that trip.

Do I have that all right? Can I do what I think I can? I really didn't think this was going to be so confusing! lol

Yes, you have understood it correctly. You will have to instruct MS to use the borrowed and banked points first (they usually do it, but it's wise to confirm).

Dean's comments apply if you have to waitlist for the dates you want at SSR and MS needs to auto-confirm anything. That could lead to some confusion where the borrowed points might not get used- or other points would need to be borrowed. if you call at 7 months and find availability- you will have no problems at all. Just cancel the home resort reservation and remake it for SSR using the same points. At the same time, you can bank any points left over from the original reservation.

Enjoy!
