Point-n-Shoot?....show your Magic!

IMG_2279-001.jpg

I just got a Canon Powershot SX50. It hasn't come in yet, but what are your thoughts on this camera? I had a very basic fuji finepix point and shoot until now.

I have the SX40 and enjoy it. I'm still learning(and I have a lot to learn) but I've been forcing myself to "play" in the manual mode.
Hope you enjoy your camera!

Thank you, it came yesterday! I think I am really going to like it. I have alot to learn as well, so this is "enough" camera for me right now! Thank you!

Hi, everyone!

I am mainly over in the Disneyland/California forums and I don't often wander outside of that area of the DIS, but this week I did and I am so glad I found you! :cool1: There are some absolutely amazing photos in this thread - honestly, at a glance, if I didn't know this was a Point & Shoot thread I would have assumed that many of these photos were taken with a DSLR.

I, too, am an avid shutterbug! I first got the itch when I was a small child (probably 4 or 5 years old) and my grandmother handed me her ancient Kodak camera to take a photo from the restaurant at the top of the Space Needle in WA. In the '80s and '90s, I was always the really annoying one in my group of friends who wanted to get pictures of everything and everyone. No one could escape my camera!:rotfl2: (They later thanked me for capturing some wonderful memories, of course, but at the time it was annoying!) For a while I thought I wanted to get into photography as a profession - or at least, as a paid side job - but I think a friend said something discouraging to me and that must have stuck in my head because I never pursued it and eventually got away from taking pictures altogether for a number of years. I resumed my rampant photo-snapping with a passion several years ago, and have been on a quest to get better, more interesting, more colorful photos ever since.

I have a very basic point & shoot (Canon SD880) and it has served me well. I don't just wait until I have a trip or an event to take photos - I will actually take many photos when I am out running boring daily errands, just to practice and get a feel for what kinds of photo opportunities I can find. I like to experiment with different vantage points and colorful subjects to see what works and what doesn't. I will prowl the neighborhood, hunting for pretty flowers and other interesting things.

I've been saying a lot on this board - whether in my trip reports on some of the threads I'm involved in - that when I see great photos, I don't think about whether the photos were taken with a DSLR, a 35mm, a cell phone camera or a point & shoot. To me, a great photo is a great photo. I don't think you have to have the most expensive camera to take good photos because so much of what makes pictures great comes from creativity and imagination. Having an eye or a vision for what will make an interesting shot is the the starting point, and the equipment just helps to execute that vision a little better!

I will share some photos now (and I'll share more on other days)...

This shot was taken in Avalon, on Catalina Island, in July 2012 - I liked the way the long stems of the flowers sort of mimicked the tall trees, and I was able to get the iconic Catalina Casino in the background....

California Adventure - Mickey's Fun Wheel - December 2011 - I tilted the camera slightly when the buckets were already swinging out, to exaggerate the sense of motion...

California Adventure - Dusk Falls on Cars Land - November 2012 - I fell in love with the extreme juxtaposition of the red rocks and fading blue sky....

The Original Farmers Market at 3rd & Fairfax - Summer 2010 - I enhanced the color in this photo later, as I wanted to use it as a Facebook Timeline cover and make the color pop...

I took this photo of flowers at the Farmers Market in 2010, and then softened it later, as I was using it in a calendar I was making and wanted it to have a sort of dreamy quality...

Wow have I missed a lot!!

And welcome Sherry E! :goodvibes Love your photos, esp. the one of all the lollipops! Great color.

Life has been tossing my one curve ball after another this winter, but things are slowly starting to stabilize and I'd like to jump back in here. I've got to upload a bunch of stuff onto my Photobucket account, then I'll be back to post!
