Wouldn't it be great if they came to the Indy meet. They are all welcome to come for sure. Just sayin' :). And by the way...I'm kicking around the idea of having Hersehy bars in August as well. Just "kickin" the idea, mind you. :) Anna's first day of school is August 11th (too darn early in my opinion) so I'm not sure how responsible of a parent I would be driving her 18 hours, going to an amusement park, and hanging out with my friends when she'll have a load of homework to turn-in on Monday. :rolleyes1

Homework on the car ride??

It wouldn't be the same without the Indy contingent!!! :thumbsup2

English kids get more term time off. I still find it weird though.

Ah I see :thumbsup2 So are Easter and Christmas breaks longer and then the half terms too? From watching movies and TV American kids seem to start school earlier in the day (it's 9am here), do they finish earlier too? (here, at least when I was at school, it was 3.30pm)

Happy hump day everyone - the good weather continues :cool1: Friday looks like it's gonna be really hot - 24 degrees :scared1: (that's hot for us ;))

Have a great day :thumbsup2

I think that you will find that the answer to these questions are going to vary all over the place. Each state sets up its regulations for schools based on the framework set by the federal government but most school schedules are actually set by local governance. I live in Maryland and our schools are governed by County Boards. My kids start school in August and are out in early June (would have been end of May but for the snow). Some counties near us start in September and end late June. We have a three day Easter/Spring break other schools have a full week.

Indiana Schools moved the start date back partially due to the requirement to get in a 180 days of instruction. This helps them Make up Snow days or other days lost due to natural disasters, with an attempt to still get out by or near June 1st, so that Graduation Dates don't have to be moved after announcements are ordered by students in January.

We have a school in my area that didn't start back until two weeks after the rest of the schools in the state due to unfinished construction at one of the schools in the district, that now won't be out until after June 20th due to the days they have to make up due to snow this past winter. A friend of mine who teaches in the elementary school was saying she has to come up with a Father's Day project for the first time in her 20+ years of teaching. She and the other teacher's were joking back in the winter when it looked like they might not get out until July, on what they were going to do for the 1st ever 4th of July party at school.

Good Morning Everyone! I hope you are having a good week. I'm still on my Disney high from last weeks trip. Chilly and rainy here (again)

It's the half term breaks that are different. But as everyone said it obviously differs from region to region about start times in the US. I think there is a lot less variance here.

This discussion made me think of Patriots' Day for some reason which is a bank holiday in April in I think only Maine and Massachusetts. I've had people from other states think I was making it up. :)

So true that there is a lot of variance. There are differences region to region in which holidays are recognized. I know we go to school on holidays that state and federal offices are closed on - Martin Luther King, Veterans Day are two that come to mind.

Happy Humpday folks! :wave2:

It's going to be a great day!! I'm leaving early to go over to Disney tonight, meeting another Diser and her family for breakfast at Ohana tomorrow then to MK! :cool1: I'm calling in sick tomorrow, sssshhhh don't tell my boss. ;)

That is hilarious :rotfl2: :rotfl2: Have a fab trip!

Ironman 2 was awesome - even better than I expected. Music for the end credits is a bit weird tho - fade out hard rock and intro Disney tune! :rotfl: DH said, this is weird - it sounds like a Disney song. I was more than happy to point out the Richard Sherman rolling thru the credits ;)

Strawberry shortcake is back in-season at DQ now :thumbsup2 :rolleyes1

cheers,
:flower3:

Happy Wednesday everyone! I'm looking forward to chat tonight. Although James reqeusted last night that we take one night a week and spend some time together. That might be tonight.

I have a birthday party tonight, so I probably won't be in chat. I hope everyone has a good day.

I'll see what I can do. I originally thought he was taking the afternoon off, but he isn't. And, I kept him up quite last night (pow-wow time) so there's a chance he'll just want his bed tonight.

In Virginia we have what is called the "Kings Dominion" Law . Schools can't open before Labor Day to help the tourist areas with retaining HS aged kids to work. Schools can get a waiver from this from the Department of Ed but its pretty hard to do so school usuallly starts the Tuesday after Labor Day and ends mid-June.

Thanks for all the replies about the school holidays :thumbsup2

Happy Thursday everyone, it's getting quite muggy here and I think we're due thunder storms over the weekend

I hope this isn't our summer already

Have a great day :goodvibes

Happy Thursday!

We are supposed to go to 80 here in Maryland today. We have been cold and rainy all week. I would like to see the sun.

Have a great day!

Good Morning Everyone!!

I haven't seen the sun since I left Florida on Sunday. Though, It might make a brief appearance this morning before the next round of clouds and rain move in this afternoon, but since I work in a basement with no windows more than likely I will miss it. :( Otherwise it will be next week before the Sun will make a reappearance here for more than a few minutes, but the nice weather I experienced in Florida is to come with it. :)
