Plus size models...PLEASEEEEE!!!

On Planet Anorexia. It seems that Earth was taken over and we "plus sized" size 10s didn't notice. ;)

LOL! I am beginning to wonder if its the entire Earth or just the DIS. Sometimes I honestly wonder if I've entered some other realm of reality when I come here. :lmao:

Obviously the fashion and retail world do not consider a 12 to be plus size, though I suppose an individual may see it as such. When I was a 12, I was overweight for my height and frame. But I didn't shop in the plus size dept because there were way too big.

I don't get why they don't use a plus size model for plus size clothes, either. Regardless if you're selling a 2 or a 20, the person buying the clothing wants to see how it hangs on that size person. Seeing a plus size article of clothing on a size 6 doesn't tell me anything about how it'll look.

size 12 is a plus size. Sorry but it is..

While I agree that they should use models that represent the majority of the line they are selling, if you are size 12, you are "big"

You are kidding me right? When I got married....I was a 12 and I'm 5'10. I looked like a rail!

I think it would be the same thing if they showed petite clothing on a taller model. A petite person would not be able to tell what the clothes would look like on their body type. It is the same with using a average sized model to sell plus size clothing. How am I supposed to tell what the clothes will look like on my plus size body if they show it on a model that they don't even make the clothing in her size. It's one thing if it's in a place where you can try the clothes on but if your online shopping it is not helpful at all.

I never mentioned wedding dresses. I have no idea where that came from. When I was a size 10-12 I weighed 120 pounds.

All sizes these days have been modified to flatter the egos of the shoppers. What used to be a 12 "back when we got married" or "in high school" is probably a 6 now. You can't compare sizes over time. As the population grew larger, the apparel manufacturers kept pace and are tricking us into thinking we really haven't changed that much.

Likewise, what used to be considered "plus" size is now considered misses. Take my SIL, for example: 5'4", 185, size 12. That's an obese BMI of 31.8. Years ago she'd be Plus, but today she's "average."

I agree with this but the fact of the matter is that if the outfit doesn't come in a size 12 then a size 12 model should not be the one modeling it.

Well the bottom line is a size 12 is NOT plus sized. There may be some size 12s who are overweight, and there may be some size 12s who are underweight (like transparent said, at 5'10", a size 12 looks pretty thin), but plus sizing starts at a minimum of 14 and is not cut the same way as a size 14 misses. I wear a size 12 or a 14 misses and could not wear a size 14 plus size clothing, its cut differently. I'd be swimming in a 14 woman's clothing, whereas the size 12 or 14 misses is cut to fit me.

The average American woman is 5'4" tall. If she weighs 146 or above she is considered overweight by the NIH with a BMI above 25. That does not take into consideration muscle mass which would lower your BMI.
I am not too sure what is considered plus size, probably varies from brand to brand. I always thought plus size as being 1X 2X etc.

Everytime I go in Lane Bryant, I can never find what I need, but there is an abundance of size 12 of everything. My feelings are that someone that is a size 12 doesn't want to admit that they can shop in such a store.

The example sited in the OP the women doesn't look like a size 12. Maybe a 6 or 8, not only only is she very tone with there no extra "fat" on her, there isn't any extra curves either.

I know a number of people who when they were size 12 were actually underweight for their body type.

I am not one of them. I am 5 feet tall and the size I should be is a 2 or 4. Not the size I am currently in mind you.............:rolleyes1 I am not a size 12 either, but if I was that would be "fat" for me. Not at all for another person. There are just all kinds of body types.

Anyway PhotoSam I agree with you. If you are selling plus size clothes, at least use a model that is somewhere in the range to give an actuate example of how it might look. It isn't like the world is lacking in attractive women who wear "women" size clothes. What manufacture was selling the bathing suit anyway?

5'4", 185 and she can wear a 12????? Thats gotta hurt!

Last time I was in Lane Bryant shopping with a friend they didn't have anything smaller then a 14/16. I found some clothes I really liked, but they didn't have my size so I could not buy them. I can wear a top in size 12 just fine, it is really loose, but some days you just want loose clothes. ;)

I just noticed that their website says 14-28. I know our local store had size 12! I wonder when this changed. I'm not surprised though, because it didn't look like any of it was selling.

I'm 5'3'' 145lbs & I am a size 10 to 12. I can't believe your SIL is in a 12 unless she is all muscle

25 years ago I was a 0 at 100lbs. What size is that today?

No kidding. Those data are reported by her...it's not like I measured her or anything.

BTW, I forgot to post that I totally agree with the OP. Models should reflect the size they're modeling.

I think we have strayed from the original complaint of the OP - this model posing in plus size clothing is NOT plus sized. Even if you consider a 12 plus sized. She's a 6 or an 8 at best, as someone else said. WHY is she modeling plus sized clothing? Yes, clothes hang better on skinny people, but we're not stupid. Does the advertiser really believe we think if we put these clothes on at a size 14W we'll look like the size 8 model?

A lot of people are missing my POINT.

I just am annoyed that they use OBVIOUSLY smaller women than they are selling these items to.

If they just used a 14w sized model, I would have no problem but some of these are idiotic.

If this woman is a size 14, I will buy and EAT that shirt.

She could possibly be a size 14......if she's like 20 feet tall!!!!!!!!!!!
