Please Think About DH...

DH is an out-of-work teacher who has been looking for a job for 2 years this spring. Teaching jobs in our area are insanely hard to come by (which, it seems to be that way pretty much everywhere right now from what we've been told.)

People that were set to retire did not do so because they couldn't afford to leave a job with the economy the way it is, people who had left teaching to be stay-at-home parents have gone back to work (with experience), etc. So, needless to say, for straight out of college teachers (like DH) with no prior teaching experience, it has been next to impossible to even land an interview here. (We have 20+ teacher friends that can not find a job.)

But, DH got a call last week that an English teacher (what he is certified to teach) at a school near us was fired, so he got the ball rolling to apply. The principal spoke with him the same day he sent in his information (on a Thursday) and said that if the hiring department was interested, they'd call him for an interview.

He received a call Monday from the hiring department, and went in for his interview this morning.

He is so excited, but I'm so worried that he's going to get his hopes up (again) and they're going to hire someone with experience since it is mid-semester.

So, please send thoughts/prayers/pixie dust our way, if you would! They told him they would be making a decision by next Wednesday. This would mean the world to him; being an unemployed newlywed has weighed heavy on him and he's been really down about not finding a job. He works 4 (yes, 4) part-time jobs just to help me financially, but we NEVER see each other. Literally, he comes home late, we say good night, I get up early, say good morning, and that's all we see each other. (We'll be married 2 years this June, and it's been like this since we got married.) Hoping things finally fall in to place for him!!

TIA!!

Prayers are with him. Heck I am in the same boat I have been out of work for 9 months my field is in Transportation Management . Keep the spirits up everything will work out . It always does :thumbsup2

Good luck! This is my first year teaching, but I am a Kindergarten teacher. I wanted to do HS English, but did not because I knew that it'd be harder to get a specific grade/subject than anything in PreK-3rd grade. It wasn't the easiest here, either though. I am at a terrible school and we go until 4:30. But, I have a job and I love my students. I hope all works out for your DH!

All the best to your husband.

My SO's closest friend is a teacher and I know what a struggle he has had looking for work recently. He owns a home in FL but moved to CO for a year for a temporary teaching position (08/09 school year) as there was nothing he could find nearby. After that position ended he was again unemployed and moved back to FL. He has been placing applications all over the country. He recently received an offer for a position in Korea which he is considering, although I doubt he will be able to accept (family constraints).

My prayers are with you guys! I am an unemployed teacher right now but by choice. I am working part time because I want to be home with my children. I am nervous about when I get back out there in a couple years when my DS is in Kindergarten. God bless! =)

Well, my first thought was to tell you to get down here to Texas, because jobs are plentiful, but then I see you're in Plano? My kids are in Leander ISD (north of Austin)- we build at least 2-3 new schools each year and they are hiring teachers like crazy. I know you would probably hate to leave DFW, but it might not hurt to look in other school districts? I hope that your DH had a great interview today and wish the best for him.

Good luck and please keep us updated :goodvibes From what I see around here, having little to no experience is a plus as some systems won't even consider you if you have experience because they have to pay more

Good Luck to your dh! My husband and I are both teacher/coaches in the DFW metroplex (Southlake, Keller, mid-cities area). We made the decision for me to take some years off after I got pregnant with our 4th child. That was 4 years ago and I, too, am nervous about trying to get back into the system. It is hard to leave a career then come back years later but I think it was the best decision for us!

Good luck! I also teach in the metroplex and work with new teachers during August. We hired so many fewer teachers this year, so I imagine other districts did too. However, I have seen a lot of replacement or added teachers this year (I create the gradebooks), so keep your head up! Any luck with a long term sub position? Most of the gradebooks I have been creating have been for teachers who were long term subs first for the teacher they replaced.

keeping your dh in my prayers. Has he looked into subbing or tutoring? Even though those positions are temporary it will bring in a lil $$$. Good luck and keep us posted

You guys need to come next door. There are so many uncertified teachers in our school systems. South Louisiana baby. You are welcome to come over to the Who Dat Nation! Hope you are ELA. We could all use a good grammar lesson over here. I taught for 11 yrs, but hung it up 2yrs ago to stay home w/ the most important kids in my world.

Wishing him all the luck in the world. We need more male teachers.

Said a little prayer for your DH this morning. I hope he hears something positive soon. :goodvibes

Thanks, everyone!

We're still (impatiently) waiting.... :rolleyes1

Actually, two of DH's jobs right now are subbing (to those that asked.) He LOVES it. (He also tutors at a nationally owned tutoring center, and works a retail job at nights.)

The areas around us even did a lottery for substitute teachers this year! Literally, they had so many applicants that they had a computer pick (lottery style) who could come to the orientations and start getting called. Luckily, he got picked in two districts. (We have one friend who left teaching a few years ago and needed to go back this year after her husband lost his job. When she didn't get hired anywhere, she tried to get a sub spot in her old district, but she wasn't picked in the lottery so they turned her away. Yeesh! She was over last night talking about that.)

We've talked about moving, but things are at a stalemate involving that at the moment. I haven't talked much about myself on this thread, but I took two years off after undergrad for him to focus on trying to find a job. We've decided that even though things haven't been ideal in the job departement that it's time for me to get focused on my career again. I'm in the process of getting ready for law school now (take the LSAT on June 7 and will send in apps this fall). I won't know until next spring where I'm going, and it may involve a big move. We always thought it would be pretty easy for DH to just pack up and move with me (and, find a new teaching job somewhere) when we felt it was a good time for me to begin law school. (We were wanting to put a lot in to savings.) So, he doesn't want to apply elsewhere until I know where I'll be starting school fall 2011.

I'm trying to keep DH's spirits lifted! We know timing and things work out as they do for a reason; we've had a ROUGH two years of marriage when it comes to income, jobs, and some family issues (with DH's side.) But, like I tell him, if we can handle all of this as newlyweds, there's not anything we can't deal with together!

Thank you all, again, for your support and kind words. This is why the DIS is so fantastic! :lovestruc

Good luck! I know with the economy rigth now school systems are really havign to cut back. My Dh is a teacher and his district has already announced a hiring freeze for next school year. HE is just finishing up his Administrator's courses, but may be forced to teach another year or two until schools are able to hire again.

That sounds like a very fair way of hiring out of the qualified applicants. Of course, not for your friend. I'm surprized that they didn't hire previous employees first and then lotto for the remaining spots.
Good luck to your DH. Hopefully he will hear soon.

In your post, qualified is the key word. They didn't scree anyone, and DH talks about how awful some of these subs are (compared to people who didn't get picked in the lottery that are a lot more qualified.) I completely agree that it's fair if they had just put people who are qualified in the lottery, but they didn't do any screens before they put the computer system together - they just threw everyone they had in to a pot.

Like I said, DH has some TERRIBLE stories about some of these people. Yeeps. :scared1:
