On several occasions recently we have discovered certain posters have been using HTML code in an inappropriate manner. To this point nobody has posted anything that could cause harm to anyone's computer but we have seen hidden links to commercial sites etc.

There is a real possibility that someone skilled in HTML could post something that would cause problems with some people’s computers.
Because the safety and security of our visitors is our foremost concern we are left with no choices, we have to turn off all HTML.

If you look around the internet you will find we are one of the few remaining boards that allow HTML posting. These security issues are the reason why.

BB code will be available. That means we will still be able to post links, pictures etc.

We will see several effects from this change. Pictures that previously posted using HTML will no longer be visible. "Countdown timers" will no longer work but we have found an alternative.
More information on these changes and the solutions can be found here:

I would like to apologize for not being able to give more notice of this change but we decided it was too dangerous to advertise a security problem and give someone time to take advantage of it.
If anyone wants more information on the technical issues involved please feel free to email or PM me and I can point you to some articles.

In order for the next reply to make sense ... "Javascript is what turned off signatures - not HTML."

One sad thing abour the new timers....double digit dances will never be the same..:sad1:

I think I need a mug thread to cheer me up.

Bumping to add- Why can't some people just BEHAVE themselves so that the rest of us can do what we want! Thanks for watching out for us!

Love the Poor Man's Countdown Timer. Here's a new thread for your enjoyment: Why do some people have more than 2 Countdown Timers (SuperDuperBounce) when it clearly states that only 2 will be allowed? :jester:

Wow...thanks for looking out for us, my husband would have flipped if our computer had been affected.

Just a little bump for those who missed the message.

What if we don't need a new countdown timer? What if we just want the horrible-looking crap at the bottom of our posts to go away?

Then at the top of your DIS screen on the left hand side go to User CP and go in and delete all that information out of your signature.

The way I figure it, the countdown timer is no longer a long javascript script but a much shorter link to another site producing the ticker graphic. Since the ticker is no longer served up from the disboards server, I'm actually putting less load on their server now that my three tickers require less disboards bandwidth than my previous two tickers (from their server).

Each of the "new" tickers are image files downloaded by the browser client (Explorer, Netscape, or the much better Firefox) that do not use disboards bandwidth. These image files look to be around 6 kbytes for the ticker I selected. Even three of these require less bandwidth than do most images people place in their signatures.

One could argue that three tickers take up more vertical space on the page than two tickers (which is obviously true). Still three tickers require less vertical space than some of the images people attach to their signatures or even some text signatures that list every visit to WDW since the beginning of time (along with the names of each of the dalmation puppies).

Bottom line is that since signatures are not being downloaded from the disboards server, the logic of limiting signatures to three counters to speed download times is no longer valid. The only argurment that would make it valid would be to eliminate all BB codes from signatures which of course would eliminate the ticker.com tickers and all images, smilies, and hyperlinks placed in signatures. This cheering smiley :cheer2: requires 2.5 kbytes of bandwidth to download. How many signatures have you seen that use a dozen of these.

Ask an engineer a question and you run the risk that he or she may just answer it. I can see some of your are probably :sad2: while others are :bounce: for joy. The good news is that it is National Engineers Weeks so find the closest engineer and :love1: him or her.

I write the above in :jester: but I do not see an argument for limiting signatures to two. I quite often turn viewing of signatures off in my profile so that it is a lot easier to read threads. This is always an option for someone who has a low bandwidth connection.
