Hi to all!!

(I think that this is the right thread to post this and if not, then feel free to move it to the right thread)

We have an April trip coming up and we have contacted someone regarding their points to rent and everything seems to be great. We haven't paid yet as they are awaiting an answer and I really wanted someone's opinion on how I can "proof" myself from anytype of scam.
If anyone has any pointers please feel free to give them!:thumbsup2

Thank you..:goodvibes

I too, am interested in this subject. I have entered negotiations with a fellow Dis'er to rent points for March.

There have been many posts on this topic and I have been curious as I have rented over 400 points for a trip in March ($$$). The truth is, there is no guarantee. I tried calling the resort I am booked at (I even have my reference #) and Disney would not speak to me as they know I am ot the DVC owner.

I have a contract from my renter that lists all of her contact info....I even checked her address to ensure it exists (paranoid). I have called her about 3 times on both cell and home and she is alwasy there and pleasent to deal with. I paid half up front and I pay the other half 60 days out. I already have the reservation letter from Disney and she is also booking my ME.

Basically, it is trust. Have a phone conversation, get some references, and then it is a leap of faith.

I found this listing on Redweek.com and I negotiated a price. I also tried using a broker who could not get me the price i wanted but that's also an option.

See the [thread=1669863]Considering Renting from a DVC Member?[/thread] thread.

The above post was right on. There has to be a trust between both owner and renter. The other thing you can do is look at the amount of posts on the DIS. Generally speaking your less likely to get burned by someone who posts many times vs renting from someone who has post only a couple. With that said, from my travels on the DIS I have read very few horror stories about renters getting burned over the few yeas I've been posting here. Good luck and renting is a great avenue to get great accomodations at a very nice price......

We may need to rent points some time in the future, and thought crossed my mind .

What if we could meet fellow DVC owners while at Disney who rent thier points occasionally?

I mean, if I met someone staying at BWV who had ID and said they sometimes rent out their points and here's my email, contact me when you need extra points; I'd feel alot more comfortable handing over my hard earned cash.

Before we became owners I rented points. We actually just went on the trip a couple of weeks ago. I was scared to death! I e-mailed the owner many times with questions and he was always very nice. However, I never talked to him on the phone. I too tried to call the resort directly just to confirm and had no luck even a couple of days before we left. Long story short when we pulled in to AKV and the guard gave us a tag for our car with our name on it, I was very relieved! Everything went great, no problems! Yet, I am not sure the cost savings was worth my nerves over the past 7 months. I guess I am glad we purchased and I will not have to rent again. I may consider transfer if I ever need extra points. Good luck in whatever decision you make. We had a contract that he signed, my husband created it, but I don't know if it would have counted for much if anything would have happened.

Another very good thread is Diznyfanatic's DVC Point Rental Primer It has a lot of good info from a wide variety of experienced DISers.

Although people worry about fraud, it is EXTREMELY rare in DVC rentals here on the DIS.

The two most common problem areas I've seen have not been fraud-related at all. They've been 1) misunderstandings of how DVC operates (and how that differs from a traditional hotel reservation) and 2) unexpected changes in plans.

You can eliminate both of those issues if you do your homework, have solid plans that are not going to change, and have a clear mutual understanding of the transaction's details. The devil is always in the details and neither party should leave anything unclear in a rental transaction.

As noted above, trust is required on both sides of every rental contract.

I've rented a few times to other DIS board people and what you need to do is to make sure you get a written legal contract for your stay. It also needs to specify how much is due and when it is due.

Read all the advice given, but when it comes down to it, it is a private transaction between two people and a contract is only good for informational purposes.

The DVC member owns the reservation until you check in. Good luck with your decision. It works for many, for some it is not the way to go.

I have rented the past two years and have an upcoming trip in May that I have rented for again. I have already paid full amount for 280 points. It really is a true leap if faith and sure we have a contract and sure I could take them to court if I show up at Disney and my reservation is cancelled, but how long would that take and what would the odds be I got my money anytime soon. Bottom line, try and rent from someone you know or at least with a decent amount of posts on DIS boards. So far, I am 2 for 2 in not having any problems and it has saved me a bunch of money

HOWEVER, this time around with the 4.3 promo, renting doesnt really justify the risk because the pricing is so comparable, hence why you are seeing rentals for $9 -$10 pp as opposed to $11-$12 pp just a few months ago

With the 4.3 promo, you can usuallu get the same price as renting points without the hassle, the worry, and you get a full cleaning everyday.

That being said, I did my contract pre the 4.3 promo so i am stuck and already paid for in full.

I know i rambled on, just wanted to share as much info as possible:wizard:

What about renting points from a company, I know it does cost a little more, but the peace of mind might just be worth it. I know of one with a man named David, but I don't know of any other. This is the way I think I might go, but not sure for now.
