...about whether other timeshares can use the DVC properties.

I was at a neighbor's house yesterday and they are planning a fall trip to Disney. She said they have a timeshare (I think she said through Interval, Intervale?...not sure). She mentioned that she's been waiting for them to call back. Then her husband piped in and said "They keep calling me but I keep telling them that if it's not in the park, I don't want it." She was unaware that they were calling her husband at work.

Can they get in-the-park accommodations through their timeshare? (My gut answer is no but I didn't say anything to them as I wasn't positive.) I did mention they could rent DVC points.

Can anyone help out here? Thank you!

Interval International is the company DVC trades with, so yes, it is possible for a trade into DVC, but is a difficult trade to get.

IIRC, trades into DVC for dates in May, September and January are most likely. There are seldom other times available. If they are hoping for this fall - October, November or December, I don't think they will get a DVC property. I suppose it's possible, just not very likely - especially if the resort they own isn't a high end property.

OTOH, it's very easy into trade into Orlando if you don't want a DVC resort. There are lots of timeshares in Orlando and the surrounding areas.

Best wishes-

A lot of people are told when they buy their timeshare that this will be "no problem." The reality is that it certainly isn't a sure thing.

most DVC properties that II gets are studios or 1-bedroom. Not many 2-bedrooms period.

So you get less of a choice with DVC.

However the Marriotts are really nice and pretty close. THey will need a car.

It is a difficult trade, but it does happen. Even now there seems to be availability of studios and 1 bedrooms for OKW in September. Of course hurricane season and the children going back to school is probably the reason. October is more of a long shot.

I hope your friends get what they want, but are also prepared to make alternate arrangements if needed.

September 24 - October 1 will be our 3rd exchange into WDW. We have stayed at OKW 1x and WLV 1x. This time we lucked out and got BCV!

Kentear, could you please share which timeshare resort you own? What have you used to trade into these DVC resorts?

What size DVC condo have you confirmed each time?

Have all of your DVC stays had September check-ins?

Just curious since this comes up once in a while. I think it's great. It means other DVCers have been able to use their points to travel elsewhere too. :)

I have traded in to DVC several times through II including using a bonus week for a 1 BR at BWV. I also run searches to see what's available almost daily for weeks on end. I run those searches with multiple different II weeks and resorts so I can get a feel of what I can get depending on what I give up and it gives me a measure of the trade power of each resort and unit size I search with. BTW, it's much easier to do that now with the new changes in the II website. Of course this doing it this way reflects excess inventory since it's availability and will likely miss the occasional higher demand week that doesn't make it to the bank to search for. But to do it for actual trades would not be practical.

Most weeks that I see for WDW are Jan, early Feb, May, late Aug, Sept, early Oct, and early to mid Dec. For HH it's essentially Dec to mid March with not much for the week between Xmas and New Years. For VB it's May, Oct, Nov (excluding Thanksgiving) and early Dec. It's mostly OKW and SSR but that's likely a function of those being newer and larger resorts. Given the workings of the DVC arrangements with II, it's reasonable to think a proportional number and size of units are deposited at all resorts. And while it appears to be more studio and 1 BR units available, 2 BR units are not uncommon. Also since more people search for 2 BR units, they are far less likely to make it to the general availability at II.

I have seen all resorts and many times not in the grids above. BTW, I have seen 4th of July a number of times. Only II and DVC know for certain. But I think it's reasonable t think that all times and all resorts are deposited with the exception of 3 BR units and Premier time, even that would be in question at VB. Currently there are a number of units that meet the grid info above.

Once we complete a large family trip for next Xmas, and possibly a wedding around the same time, I plan to sell most of my DVC points and just exchange in.

Techinically, II trades with DVC, but I htink they are pretty few and far between and won't happen during the busiest times (read:when the kids are not in school).

I have heard others who have bought through II that have been told that "yes we trade into WDW" but they aren't told the technicalities of the limited opportunity to trade etc. They think they are "putting one over" on Disney by not paying the price for the DVC because II says "we can still go there".

Then you wind up with folks in the predicament your relatives are in...

What's really sad is the number of people out there that still don't have a clue about WDW. I have a friend that mentioned they were going to Orlando and staying in a condo. I asked them if they were staying on site and she indicated they were. Guess what, they most definitely were not. I think a lot of people think many of the timeshares in the area are affliliated w/Disney. One big, happy family! Of course, she's also the one that thought a Park Hopper would allow them to enter US & SW. :sad2:

This is a pet peeve of mine. Many timeshares in the Orlando and surrounded area say they are "disney" however, IMO, they are not. OTOH, most DVC members know little about timeshare exchanges, or for that matter, timeshare in general so it goes both ways.

Lisa P - we own a studio at Pelican Bay Beach Resort in St. Martin.
We had two September check ins and one in May. We leave in 5 days for Beach Club!! Ken :)
