Hi - First of all please let me assure all of you that neither my DH nor I use WDW pools. We do not hang out at the pool and we are not pool hoppers. So, thoughts of towels on chairs and people trying to sneak into a pool at a resort in which they are not staying do not raise my blood pressure. But, I would like to share what I just read on page 53 of the Fodor's Wald Disney World for Couples 5th edition published in 2003. Under the description of value resorts is the following sentence, "While recreation means only themed pool areas, all value resort guests are free to use recreation at any other Disney resorts." Now, if I was a person off the street who is staying at the AS or any other resort, my take on this would be that I could swim at any pool I want to since the pool at the AS is described as 'recreation' and my guide book is telling me that I am free to use recreation at any other resort. Since I have read the dreaded pool hopping threads on this board, I would know that staying at the AS and using the YC pool is a big NO NO but do you think that the average reader of this WDW guidebook would also know that pool hopping is not allowed after reading this sentence in the guidebook?

I would not take it to mean pools since it says at All Star "recreation means only themed pools." I would take it to mean boats, bikes etc. is available at other resorts but not at All Stars.

Considering their are signs posted at all resorts stating that the pool is for the use of that resort guest, I do not see a problem with understanding who can use them.

I do see a problem with people ignoring the obvious and doing whatever they want.

They definitely could have worded it better. Maybe a few nice emails to them and they might change it for the next edition?

The sentence is confusing because the statement tells us something we have been told isn't true. I would imagine that newbies read that and figure they get to spend the day pool hopping.

That would be pretty frustrating to go to SAB only to be turned away. I hate wasting vacation time:(

For a newbie that could be confusing. I would be frustrated if I thought I could do something, planned it and then found out I couldn't.

Frustration does not excuse the rude ignorant behavior.

Does FODOR's have any association with Disney?

I mean if someone walked into the Yacht Club and showed that hightlighted section to the duty manager... could they say "That is not a book that Disney Publishes"?

Just curious....

>>^..^<<

I have to agree that this is very confusing. I can understand how anyone reading that book would think exactly what you say: "Cool I can spend the day going from resort to resort, swimming in all the different pools"

Thanks for bring this to our attention.

Cass, Fodors doesn't have an association with Disney. Birnbaums does. I haven't looked at their book lately, and don't know how they address the issue, if they even do...

Speaking of Birnbaums, did anyone notice the 2003 edition of his book recommends tipping housekeepers. I know many say it isn't a tipped position but now Birnbaum lists it as so. I wonder if the poolhoppers going by a guidebook would now tip mousekeeping because they read it in the "official" guidebook. There are large signs at the resorts stating pools are for those particular resort guests. I'm betting that if someone was capable of reading a book, they are capable of reading the signs. Just for the record I do tip housekeeping and never poolhop.

I would be confused myself. In fact, if I were not so well versed ;) on the subject of pool hooping from reading these boards, I would think I could do it by reading the guidebook.

Thanks for the info.

I can't recall if this is the same reference, but some time ago some one else posted a quote from a WDW guide book that stated that pool hopping was allowed. The concensus view here was that at one time, some time ago, WDW did allow pool hopping and that the guidebook author was still "living in the past".

Just curious - Even though we stay on Disney property every year, I have yet to set foot in one of their pools. I looked at the AKL pool when we stayed there last year because I was curious about what i looked like since I read that some people said they didn't like the color of the pool bottom. I do not remember seeing any signs about who could or could not swim there but then I wasn't looking for any signs either. Does it say resort guests only or guests of this resort only?

Cant' speak for all of them but the Poly says that the pool is for use for the guests of the Poly . The GF says it is for guests of the GF and IDS will be checked. At the WL it states for guests of the WL only. I've never seen one state resort guests only. They all had the guests of ________ resort.

As Skiwee states it lists the resort such as this pool is for the use of the guests of the Disney's Polynesian resort. etc

The "No Pool Hopping" rule is also printed in the resort "newspaper" you are given at check-in.

We are DVC members. I know we can not pool hop at SAB anymore, but if I am correct...we can go to other pools...right?
Also, for fellow DVC'ers do you tip your houskeeping on full cleaning and trash and tidy? Just wondering.......

LadyRose,

AKL pool is off the list for DVC pool hoppers too.

They sometimes suspend pool hopping for DVC Members during peak times.

As far as tipping Housekeeping, in a studio or 1BR I leave $5 for T&T, and $10 for full housekeeping, in a 2BR it's $5-8 for T&T depending on if we've been taking out the trash ourselves, etc., and $15 for full housekeeping.

I would suspect that pool hopping wasn't a problen until SAB was built. SAB is the main reason we stay YC/BC (location is great also), and I am glad they check your room key before entering the complex.

I wish there was someplace as nice as YC/BC about 15 hours closer to our home, I'd go there more often even without the theme parks.
