What do you do when some one may need to cancel a reservation rented from a DVC member? Or because we may not go, can the name be changed on the exsisting ressie? We probably won't even be able to change the dates (dh lost his job). Just curious and haven't heard from the DVC member that we rented from yet.

The DVC owner can cancel the reservation, but there are penalties depending on how close you are to the date of the reservation. If it is within 24 hours, it is not able to be canceled. Good luck.

It will really depend on the agreement you have with the renter. Look at any email/paper trail you may have. The DVC policy is irrelevant to your situation. I don't know of any renter that wouldn't make a name a change for you, if you can rerent it your.

Sorry to hear about dh
Good luck
Sandy

It's all a personal arrangement. You should have made some type of agreement when you originally made the rental. Usually they are "final sales" but people can sometimes work with you to fix a problem.

The DVC member has restrictions on their points as well. Especially if it's close to the travel date and the member rented you points that are expiring during this Use Year, they may not have very many options themselves to re-rent the points.

Changing the name of the reservation should be no problem at all. The member just needs to call it in.

Sorry to hear about your husband -- hope it all works out fine.

Most people who rent their points do so in a non refundable way. Depending on the situation, how far out, and the restrictions on the points; they may well have some flexibility and work with you. As a minimum they should be willing to let you subrent the reservation and change the name or change the dates depending on when the points expire and availability.

Some will tell you the renter (DVC member) can just cancel with no penalty, this is balogna. If it's more than 31 days away, they can cancel and get full use of the points. But as mentioned previously in this thread, there are other restrictions on the points. If less than 31 days but before the day of arrival, they can cancel and the points go into a holding account and can only be used to book short notice.

Hopefully your renter will be willing to be flexible and let you sub-rent to someone else, which would entail changing the name on the reservation with DVC Member Services.

If it is more than 31 days away, the reservation can be cancelled, and the points go back into their regular account. That could be problematic for them if they are under when they can bank points though, because that means they'd have to try and rent them again, use them, or lose some or all of them(depending on the time of year and their Use Year). If it is under 31 days, the points go into a holding account and they have to use them by the end of their Use Year, but can only make the reservations within 60 days of their date of travel. If it's less than 24 hours, points are lost.

Sorry about your bad luck with DH's jobs. Sending some prayers and pixie dust that he finds someting else soon.

Regardless of what the person you rented from is able to do with their points, which can be very confusing for someone that is not an owner, your situation is based on your contract with the person you rented from. Hopefully you can work things out with them.

I am so sorry this has happened to you. I understand totally from first hand experience what you are going thru. Hopefully things will work out for you guys really soon. Good luck and happy thoughts coming your way.

My vote is to go anyway....we just got back from 7 days...celebrating the loss of DH's job :):).....There are a lot worse things in this world that might have happened besides losing a job (and believe me in the previous 8 months I experienced lots of them)

What ever you do good luck.....and here's to hoping your dh gets a job soon...:):)
