Over a year ago we bought a large plasma TV and received a PS 3 as part of the deal. We use this for blue rays and the kids games. Now out of the blue it will not load/read any movies or games. When I went on Sony's website, it said it would be $149 to send it in!:scared1: Has anyone ever had theirs repaired? Is there a cheaper way to fix it? I just can't stomach the cost of repair.

I would not have it repaired anywhere but Sony. They will not work on it if anyone else has opened the case, and if you have a warranty left, it will void it.

Have you tried turning it off in the back, unplugging it and letting it sit overnight? We were having the same problem about a week ago and tried that and now it is working flawlessly. (knock on wood)

Are you getting a yellow set of steady lights? Known as the yellow ring of death (similar to xbox 360 red ring of death).

If not, then unplug the rear cord from the console. Wait at least 30 seconds. When you turn on the ps3, hold down the power button until you hear 3 beeps. This will reset the inputs also.

That should work unless the console bricked (ie is really dead) If that is the case, call Sony and give them the serial number. The quote from the website is for consoles not under warrenty. There is a good chance yours still is. If it is, they will give mail you a shipment box and return label. Box it up and return and wait about 3-5 weeks for fixed or refirbished unit. Be sure to get a usb zip drive and back up ALL your stuff before you send it out. You may be a new hard drive installed and your data will be lost.

I feel your pain, mine is doing the same thing and I've tried everything that I saw suggested on some tech sites with no luck. I've had it over a year (I believe there's a one-year warranty) so I'll be stuck paying the repair cost if I send it to Sony...so frustrating considering it got used no more than a couple dozen times, apparently this is a known problem which unfortunately I didn't know about prior to buying the PS3.
