06-18-2008 - Monkeys, plastic bags and the beach
I'm wrapping up our last few days of Chicago/NYC into this one post-gotta get back to some serious Disney planning, the days are flying by!
When I last wrote on the mini-TR we were visiting the Met. The next day we headed to the Bronx Zoo. Henry was exhausted the ENTIRE train ride up, but would not sleep. However, the young man across from us on the train had no problem sleeping. Mouth hanging open, snoring and all. Eventually he woke up and smiled at Henry and chatted with us a bit. He was a nice kid.
We got to the zoo, went straight for the monkeys and realized Henry was asleep. It was too bad, there one a monkey right up against the glass that kept looking into the stroller to see Henry sleeping. It was adorable.
We moved on and came to the fish - Henry had woken up and LOVED the fish!
Look at them eyes!
Oooohing at the fish:
We were all over the beautiful zoo and came to the peacocks, which I just flipped out over. I made DH stay there forrrrrrrrrrrrrevvvvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. There were several with their tail feathers up and "flirting", it was really incredible to see! I took a ridicilious amount of time videoing them and took like a ga-jillion pictures. Unfortunatly, all those with the tail feathers up had their butts to us. Here at least you can see the beautiful colors.
We wandered and saw giraffes, wild dogs, flamingos and more. We eventually came upon the sea lions which I also found incredible. Here is Daddy and Henry watching the sea lions.
We really enjoyed the zoo, there were lots of trails and tons of animals to watch. We happened upon some neat things I had never seen, like the peacocks shaking their tails, some animals being fed, the sea lions were jumping in and out of the water and barking, the monkeys were very playful, and the birds were just incredible-Henry liked them too!
After the zoo, we headed back into Manhattan and hit Times Square.
I DO NOT like Times Square. Ugh. Yes, if you are a tourist and have never seen it, you have to go. But seriously, it's so very, very annoying. But, I do enjoy Chevy's Mexican Resturant on Times Square, and we wanted to get a few souviners. So off to Times Square.
Henry loved all the lights!
After dinner, which was very good, we headed to M&Ms World. Where DH decided he wanted M&Ms. They charge you $9.99 a POUND here. When there is literally a street vendor outside the door charging you 75 cents a bag. But wait, they come in crazy colors! So that makes them worth $9.99 a pound, right? Well, according to DH it does. Despite him being COLOR BLIND. I just don't get it.
DH contemplating on what color to get. About 2 minutes after this picture he asked me what colors we should get, since none of them matter to someone who is color blind!
We ended up with teal and orange. DH picked the orange - I think he just knew I like orange!
Here is a shot in the M&Ms store, it's a 3 tier madhouse:
That night Henry was POOPED. He fell asleep like this!
The next day was cool and a bit rainy. We got a late start, big surprise, eh?!
In NYC, when it's rainy you will see strollers with plastic bags over them. Plastic bags! I thought we weren't supposed to allow our children to play with plastic bags, yet millions of New Yorkers place their kids in them every rainy day...including us. I conformed:
Okay, so it's not really a plastic bag, but when I first saw these things when I moved out there I was amazed. There are air vents on the sides, just so ya know....
After using the plastic bag that day, I decided I would like one as well. It kept Henry nice and toasty warm and dry! Unlike us.
We had headed to my favorite Barnes & Noble in Manhattan, it's right on Lincoln Square across from Juliard. The above pic of Henry in his plastic bag is in the book store while browsing our favorite section, Travel books.
After Barnes & Noble, we all headed to The Popover Cafe. I LOVE ME SOME POPOVERS! And here is one of my very, very few food pics:
If I recall correctly, Henry was exhausted and sleeping on the seat in our booth. It was cute.
That was about it for the day. Nothing too exciting, but nice and relaxing and wrapped up with tasty food.
The next day, our last NYC day, we headed to Coney Island. Joe had nevere been there, and it was a perfect weather day. It also gave us a chance to meet up with my friend Tomasz, who lives near Coney Island.
On the boardwalk:
Ahhh, the ocean:
Henry's first time in the sand!
He wasn't too keen on the water, shrieked both times we took him in - just his toes grazed the water!
This was the only time Henry kept his sunglasses on the entire trip. The bright sun and sand blowing was enough for him to realize the necessity!
Con'td in next post...
