Planning our Wilderness Lodge Adventure! Nov 8-15 ~ We are back!

I like the pictures you added to your first post. The look on your DH's face cracks me up.

Restaurants in MK- Did you check out the menus on allearsnet.com? That might help you narrow it down some. I've found that every place seems to have an equal number of good and bad reviews.

We have adrs at all of the table service restaurants in MK, except LTT, for our trip.

I've been obsessively reading the dining review threads on here lately. I have to stop though. I'm getting to freaked out about some of my choices. Like BOMA. :scared1:

HA HA -- too funny about Casey's Hot Dogs!

I don't know if you want my 2-cents or not, but a couple of thoughts I had reading your restaurant choices:

Crystal Palace is way yummy! Also, they have the Pooh characters there for all three meals -- one of our traditions is for DD to have her picture made with Pooh on each trip -- we started when she was nine months old -- that's been very fun!

And of course, Pecos Bill's always gets our vote because of their chili cheese fries and fixins' bar -- I love being able to heap lettuce, pickles, and mustard on my hamburger!

Main Street Bakery is on our list for the next trip as well -- I am thinking early breakfast on our MK day or snacks during one of the parades.

Hi Brook,

Thanks for the link to your PTR. I think I enjoy the planning almost as much as the trip itself.:yay:

I try to read the Disney Dining Reviews as often as possible. When several people give good reviews of a restaurant, I put it on my list of possibles.

You might ask your friends on the AKL thread to name a few of their favorite restaurants and why they like them. I'm sure they will have great advice for you.

02-18-2008 - Stroller Info

Sorry-not Epcot Eateries, but that is coming SOON! :) This is some info from a pal on another thread...

Just a "stroller suggestion":

We bring our own fold up umbrella stoller(s)...even when flying. Most, if not all, airlines will let you check them at the gate...so you wheel the little one(s) up to the boarding area, down the gangway, fold the stroller up...and the baggage guys grab it before takeoff.

When you land, it's usually waiting for you right outside the plane doors, on the gangway.

It saves you money AND you'll have use of the stroller around your resort, which can be a godsend.

I had no idea you could wheel your stroller down the gangway. That is awesome news to this gal's ears!!

I like the pictures you added to your first post. The look on your DH's face cracks me up.

:rotfl2: There was another one that he had a huge look of surprise on his face, I knew if I posted that one he would NOT be happy-should he find out! It was so tempting...but the one I posted won out. I thought I had better be nice considering he's taking me to WDW!

I have looked at the menus, that will be part of my Round 2 Research I think. I don't think I looked at that site at all last time around, and I really wish I would have. DH and I aren't huge on seafood, so we steered clear of places like Coral Reef that sound like a 100% seafood menu, when they do serve several dishes that aren't seafood.

We ate at Boma last trip and it was GREAT! There were tons of things to choose from!

Here are some of my not-so-wonderful pictures:

DH had no problems clearing his dessert plate!

Zebra Domes! YUM YUM

I hope you enjoy it! I loved the breads and hummus - couldn't stop eating it all!

GREAT idea about the DC with Pooh! I love it!!! Very surprisingly I told DH about Crystal Palace last night and he even brought it up today about how much he would enjoy it. I think it might be a winner if we end up eating a Table meal at MK.

I am thinkin' the same about the early breakfast at the Mainstreet Bakery...yummmmm...!

Kathy

Hey Kathy! Thanks for joining me on my adventure! It's really hodge-podge, but helps me spew out all my ideas and tidbits I read! :)

I am looking forward to reading all the Dining Reviews too - that will help me whittle down the list!

I did ask on the AKL Lite thread about favorite Counter/favorite Table meal about a week or so ago, I've gotten some good advice. Le Cellier seems to be a fav!

02-18-2008 - One HUGE, GIGANTIC Step Closer!

This is not directly Trip or WDW related, but I HAD to share! DH and I just paid off THREE - count 'em - THREE credit cards!! :woohoo:

We have been working on getting out of our hugely replusive amount of credit card debt since April 2007, and really pushing since July 2007.

We still have my student loan and a few others, but are SO much closer! It feels GREAT!

We paid off our wedding rings, our honeymoon to WDW, and a loan that DH has had foreverrrrrrr. This WDW trip will be paid for in CASH. And my goal is that we are debt free (minus the student loan) by the time we board the plane. Ahhhhh, that will be a beautiful thing!

And it will allow for much more lavish trips to WDW in the future! :dance3:

On with the Tables!

Akershus Royal Banquet Hall
  • Nordic fare

Alfredo di Roma / Tutto Italia
  • Opening as Tutto Italia - but only temporarly according to PassPorter - new place in fall 2008 - no clue what it is!

Biergarten
  • German stuffs - can be very tasty, but again, pretty common in MN...
  • Entertainment
  • Buffet - good for DH and good for DS

Les Chefs de France
  • Sounds like a nice atmosphere
  • Food sounds a tad too adventerous for this family

Coral Reef
  • Already has thumbs up because of the free diver surprise I can do for DH!
  • Big aquarium - cool atmosphere that we will all enjoy
  • Not just seafood

The Garden Grill Restaurant
  • I remember seeing this place from our last trip and the atmosphere looked warm and comfortable - just by looking at it, it made me want to eat there
  • Am I reading this correctly that the restaurant rotates?! I do not remember that! Very neat!
  • Food sounds GREAT

Le Cellier
  • I've heard TONS about this place!
  • Steakhouse....yum....
  • Sounds very pretty and cozy
  • I heard about the prezel bread here and upon telling DH these two magic words "pretzel bread" his jaw dropped!
  • I've also heard the desserts are good

Restaurant Marrakesh
  • Entertainment
  • Lamb---drooooooooool

Nine Dragons
  • Sounds very pretty!
  • Closing in 2008 for renovations, no opening date given - but, when it does open it has an exhibition kitchen! DH would love that!

San Angel Inn
  • Mexican - we love Mexican!
  • Sounds like a great atmosphere

Now for the Counters!

Boulangerie Patisserie

Cantina de San Angel
  • We ate here in 2006, and it was alright - nothing great, but not bad
  • Tacos & Burritos

Electric Umbrella
  • Free refills - but we could BARELY drink the huge sodas you get with the DDP already!
  • Basic foods - burgers, wraps

Fountainview Bakery
  • MOCHA! LATTE!
  • Not for lunch, but for a snack! (or coffee break!)

Kringla Bakeri og Kafe
  • Lighter fare
  • Desserts sound good

Liberty Inn
  • Basic American foods
  • Kinda boring....

Lotus Blossom Cafe
  • Chinese
  • Indoor and outdoor seating

Sommerfest
  • German, bratwurst, sauerkraut, etc
  • We ate here last trip - good, but nothing fantastic

Sunshine Seasons
  • Food stations - lots of choices
  • Heard good things about this one too - something for everyone
  • Sounds like some lighter fare available
  • ESPRESSO, CAPPUCINO! :)
  • I like the atmosphere of the Land pavillion. It really stands out in my mind.

Tangerine Cafe
  • Middle Eastern - which we both enjoy
  • Coffee bar!

Yakitori House
  • Japanese fare - other choices listed than sushi for DH

Yorkshire County Fish Shop
  • Fish & Chips is very popular - DH doesn't like seafood, but he does like fried fish, like fish sticks - this might be a good one, though he might have to "investiagate" it to see if it looks appealing before agreeing

Just a couple choices at Epcot...;)

The Survivors are:

Table
  • Coral Reef
  • The Garden Grill Restaurant
  • Le Cellier
  • Restaurant Marrakesh
  • Nine Dragons (I'll have to do some digging, the exhibition kitchen is what got it on this list)
  • Rose & Crown Pub and Dining Room (only with Illuminations)
  • San Angel Inn
  • Teppan Edo

Goodness! I guess we'll have to make an additional 7 trips to Disney to get all these places in!

Counter - putting lunch only on here, other little shops could be good for a snack...or ya know, a coffee ;)
  • Sunshine Seasons
  • Tangerine Cafe
  • Yakitori House
  • Yorkshire County Fish Shop

Got a bit of work ahead of me on this group, don't I? Any advice on these?

Ok, I'm all caught up!
Love the pictures - little Henry is SO cute! I'm enjoying your pre-trip plans so far!

Here are some opinions on the restaurants we did in Dec:
MK:
The Pinocchio Village Haus - horrible. The food was really bad. And I was disappointed that they advertised pizza but did not offer it as a kids' meal choice.

Crystal Palace - unfortuately we weren't all that impressed. Check-in was crowded and confusing. The food was just ok. Our server told us that the buffet was the same on both sides but it wasn't - there were additional choices on the other side that we didn't see until we were getting dessert. Lines for the buffet were really long and slow. I've read many good reviews of CP so maybe it was just an off-day for us. I've heard that breakfast is better than lunch so maybe we'll give it another shot for breakfast.

Epcot:
Garden Grille - one of my favorites! Character interaction was awesome. They spent lots of time with us and came back to our table multiple times, playing games with the kids. The food was great and it was nice to have it brought right to the table instead of getting up for a buffet. The restaurant does rotate but it is so slow that you don't feel it (DH gets motion sickness so he was a little worried at first, but he was totally fine).

Sunshine Seasons - also really good. Lots of different choices and the food was very fresh. Go late or early though because it gets crowded.

Good for you paying off your credit cards!!! :thumbsup2

Glad all your planning is moving right along!

You will love WL! I have stayed both there and AKL and they both have a very tranquil feeling. There will be many places to explore with your son. You will have trails to walk. You can watch the Electric Water Pagent from the beach at night.

I will also recommend Crystal Palace. My teen boys still request that place for breakfast even though they are way past characters! They just love the food. We have had dinner and lunch there before, and it was also good. Columbia House is a favorite of ours for CS as there are so many places to sit down, and I always enjoyed the soup (miss the bread bowls!).

Definitely loved Le Cellier in Epcot! Garden Grill was good, but I know they have changed the menu a few times over the years, so I am not sure if it is the same as when I last went.

Keep sharing your plans! It helps those of us who aren't going feel the magic!

We too had a WDW honeymoon and are going back for the first time with our child...it feels like a whole new world!
I was drawn to your pre-trip report from the WL in the title and really enjoy that you are including all your thinking, planning and useful bits of information as you go!

The stroller to the walkway- right outside the plane is great!! We found that taking our time getting off the plane helps to ensure that the stroller is right there when we get off and we don't have to wait on the gangway thingie...

Thank you and welcome to my purge of planning mess! :rotfl2:

THANK YOU! Very good to know all this. We will be doing all, or most Tables as Dinners. Breakfast will be something quick/small, like a bagel. Lunch will be Counter. EXCEPT, I have to go to Kona. I just have to. The coffee there is calling my name. I can hear it, all the way from Orlando! But, I'm thinking we pay pay OOP for this one so we can still enjoy 6 Table dinners!

Good for you paying off your credit cards!!! :thumbsup2

And Thank you again! We are sooooooooo excited to be closer to being debt free! And DH was thrilled that we paid off the last Disney trip before we go on this one. I'm thrilled that we will be paying in cash for this one!

Glad all your planning is moving right along!

You will love WL! I have stayed both there and AKL and they both have a very tranquil feeling. There will be many places to explore with your son. You will have trails to walk. You can watch the Electric Water Pagent from the beach at night.!

I am looking forward to watching Henry play in the sand on the beach! And I am keeping my fingers crossed for a "Bear Face" room, which is a room that looks directly out over the courtyard at WL and onto Bay Lake, so we can have a great view of the Electric Water Parade. In 2006, DH and I saw it from the boat that took us from the WL back to the MK after our dinner at Artist's Point, it was really neat!

I will also recommend Crystal Palace. My teen boys still request that place for breakfast even though they are way past characters! They just love the food. Welcome! Glad you are enjoying all my tidbits and my thinkin' out loud. It REALLY helps me to get it all in one place. Plus, I figure others might share something useful that I don't know, or I might share something someone else didn't know!

Great advice about waiting on the plane too! I will keep that in mind.

I'm gonna check out your PTR. :) We are soooo excited to be taking Henry to WDW, I love reading about others taking their kid(s) for the first time!

02-19-2008 - Hollywood Studios Eats, ROUND ONE

ALRIGHT! Onto Hollywood Studios Eats...I will foreverly call this MGM I think! I literally have to stop and think about it before I type. D-H-S, not M-G-M. :confused3

Counter
  • ABC Commissary
  • Backlot Express
  • Catalina Eddie's
  • Rosie's All-American Cafe
  • Flatbread Grill (Studio Catering)
  • Toluca Legs Turkey Co.
  • Toy Story Pizza Planet

Table
  • '50s Prime Time Cafe
  • Hollywood and Vine
  • The Hollywood Brown Derby
  • Mama Melrose's Ristorante Italiano
  • Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant

Well, this is a BREEZE compared to last night's list with Epcot!

Let's look at the Tables. My favorites.

'50s Prime Time
  • Fun atmosphere
  • Home-cooked food - I likes!
  • Good milkshakes
  • DH may not enjoy "playing" along...he's a tad shy when it comes to this sorta thing

Hollywood and Vine
  • Character meal
  • Buffet
  • Fantasmic meal package!

Holywood Brown Derby
  • Food sounds very tasty!
  • Formal atmosphere
  • Two DDP points :guilty:
  • Fantasmic meal package!

Mama Melrose's
  • Pizza & Pasta - DH's favs
  • Fantasmic meal package!

Sci-Fi
  • We ate here in 2006, it was 'eh. Cool atmosphere, but no desire to go back

(this is pretty easy!!)

Counters...
ABC Commissary
  • Variety of foods
  • Sounds decent

Backlot Express
  • Basic foods - burgers, chicken, etc.
  • Good for watching parade

Rosie's All-American Cafe
  • Food sounds similar as Backlot Express, but other stands are near-by so lots of choices in one area

Flatbread Grill
  • Good soundin' sandwiches
  • Some lighter fare
  • Outside, sheltered, tables

Toluca Legs Turkey Co.
  • What a crazy name!
  • Turkey leg. Yummm. But might be messy. Messy is not cool with DH. But I usually say "Messy food means it's good!"
  • Near other stands

Toy Story Pizza Planet
  • We ate here in '06.
  • Toy Story + Pizza = Happy DH
  • It was alright, but I would rather choose something new

The Fantasmic Dinner Package takes 2 DDP points no matter what place we eat...so while I like the idea of doing the show VIP style, I'm not sure if I'm willing to part with 2 of my Table meal credits!

Let's see who's been voted off the island and who's left:

Table
  • '50s Prime Time (if I can convince DH-this is Round 1, Round 2 is Reviews, Round 3 is DH...we'll see how long it lasts!)
  • Mama Melrose's (the most likely winner if we eat dinner at MGM...er DHS.)

Counter
  • Flatbread Grill (sounds the best, but none sound great or awful...)
  • Backlot Express - we could watch the parade from here

Hmmm....they should move a couple places from Epcot over to DHS.

I KNOW we'll be spending a whole day at DHS, it was DH's favorite and he didn't get enough time here. So, I'm thinkin' we might have to venture to a near-by resort for meal time....we'll see.

Up next, AK Eats! An even shorter list!

02-19-2008 - Animal Kingdom Eats, ROUND ONE

DH is still watchin' his show, so I'm going forward! Round One, Animal Kingdom!

Counter
  • Flame Tree Barbecue
  • Pizzafari
  • Restaurantosaurus

Table (only those on DDP)
  • Tusker House
  • Yak & Yeti

Wow. This should be quick!

Flame Tree
  • BBQ, yummmmmmmm

Pizzafari
  • We ate here last year. Pizza, pizza, pizza.
  • I don't want to eat here again, DH probably will.
  • I'll starve.
  • It's not that it was bad, but I am tired of pizza.
  • Well, pizza at home is great, but I want something new and exciting on vacation!

Restaurantosaurus
  • Holy name. Wow, that was interesting to type!
  • It's McDonalds. See comments above about wanting to try something new on vacation.

Hmmm...I wonder who will win out here? :rotfl:

Tables

Tusker House
  • Expected to re-open Nov. 18, 2008. We will just miss it!

Yak & Yeti
  • LOVE the name! :lmao:
  • Asian themed
  • Similar feel to Rainforest Cafe, which we have at the Mall of America here, DH and I both like it
  • Might not be on DDP
  • More research needed

Well, the winners are obvious!

Counter
  • Flame Tree!
  • DH will be at Pizzafari I'm sure. :rotfl:

Table
  • Yak & Yeti (gotta research it though)

Maybe this day would be good to venture to a resort too....hmmm....

I'm sorta glad there are a couple parks with not as many options, gives us a better excuse to go see other resorts and eat there. I'm sure DH will want to see all the other Deluxes that we haven't yet seen. :snooty: ;)

02-19-2008 - I'm making myself hungry! - Round One, DTD & Resorts - Or, the World's Longest Post

Wow, oh wow. We have lots more to go with Round One people. Can you hang on through it all with me?

We do plan on spending some time at DTD, the Festival of the Masters will be going on and I am VERY excited about it! I am thinking this might be a good day to burn two Counter meals at Wolfgang's and Earl of Sandwhich, then we can do two Tables another day - like at Epcot. :teacher:

Okay, let's hit the resorts! I'm gonna do this a bit different, as there are usually only a couple choices at the resorts. All DDP meals are Table, aside from the Food Court-esque places in the resorts.

AKL
Boma - Flavors of Africa
  • Buffet
  • We ate here last time and enjoyed it
  • It would bring me back to the AKL :cloud9:
  • Two words: Zebra Domes
  • But, we do want to try new places...
  • Near AKL, where we might not find a Table place to eat

Jiko - The Cooking Place
  • Oh, I hear gooooood things. Great things!
  • Two Table meals :guilty:

BWI
ESPN Club
  • We are not sports people. More like computer nerds. :surfweb:
  • Not our sort of place

Flying Fish Cafe
  • Two DDP Meals
  • Seafood...
  • A few other items than seafood, but the same non-seafood offerings at other seafood places in the World - steak, chicken, pasta - we might get bored with this if we do too many seafood focused places
  • Good desserts

Spoodles
  • Variety of foods
  • Flatbreads, kebabs
  • CREME BRULEE - ahhhhhhhhhhhh
  • Pizza window
  • Near DHS where we might not have a Table meal
