Any good recommendations for a nice, clean, comfortable hotel to sleep at along 95 that would sleep 5 (2 adults, 3 kids?) Hoping to spend no more than $100 (but will spend more than $40 to avoid a dump, LOL.)

I am from the area and I would suggest Southpark Mall area in Colonial Heights Va. It is exit 53 so about an hour from the border. There really isn't anything closer to border or in NC for quite a ways. I'm not sure how much hotels are but plenty to eat, target, Walmart etc.

We don't typically drive, but my parents drive I-95 to go to the beach every year, and they like to stay at the Baymont Inn & Suites in Roanoke Rapids, NC. It's right over the NC border, and easy to get to with restaurants near by. They usually pay less than $80 with the AAA rate, and they said it's very clean and comfortable..

There are several decent hotels in Rocky Mount, NC ... I've stayed at the Doubletree and Courtyard there while visiting relatives in the hospital close by. It's about an hour south of the Va/NC line.

The area where the Courtyard is should work for you. Stay clear of some of the less expensive options on 301, stayed at a Days Inn there once. Not a bad area, but not the best either.

Thanks for the feedback! I've put them all in our notes for consideration on the drive down--we don't plan to actually get a room until we're tired and need to stop. Our goal is to get to Rocky Mount, but hopefully get to Lumberton. Is that a safe area? The hotel rates are cheap...
