Pirate Night ~ Why so disliked?

I love Pirate night!! I have to admit, I love Halloween so any event that creates a costume.......I'm there.

If they got rid of pirate night I would not miss it.

For me, the menu is not particularly appealing, but I usually eat off the lighter fare menu anyway, so its not a big deal.

I don't like dressing up, and the bandana they give you gives me a rash, so I bring a washed bandana from a previous cruise and usually just wrap it around my wrist for the evening.

As with some other posters I don't like the idea of glorifying and celebrating criminals. While I enjoy WDW'w POTC ride as a relaxing boat ride in teh mostly dark, "pirate" things are not my cup of tea.

We don't get down in the crowd for any of the deck parties (too much noise, way too many people in a confined space), prefering to look down from above or avoid them altogether. We watch the fireworks from an upper deck and have discovered some decent viewing spots in the adult areas which tend to be less crowded. We do like the fireworks as we don't get fireworks very often at home; basically viewing fireworks for us means we're on a Disney trip...

We've never done the buffet, but normally don't do buffets due to food allergies. Maybe our next cruise we will try and at least go LOOK at the buffet :-)

I don't dislike it so much as I don't like it. I do like the fireworks. But I have no desire to stand out with hundreds of people to watch a bunch of characters dance around. So everyone else is welcome to go, you just won't see me there.

We enjoy Pirate Night and the Pirate menu. For some reason though we always ended up in Palo on that night. Twice I made an effort to make sure I made the Palo res for a different night only to have Pirate night change to my Palo night.

I don't dislike it, but if it was cancelled I wouldn't be upset. I know it's all in fun (and POTC is one of my favorite rides), but I find the idea of celebrating people who were thieves, murderers, rapists, arsonists, and generally very bad, if not evil, just doesn't sit well with me. However, I spent a number of years monitoring modern day pirates off Africa and Asia so I have a slightly different perspective on pirates than most people.

DS prefers to dress up as one of the good guys, like the Captain of the ship (cap and all) or he was peter pan too. He brought toy handcuffs once and a CM allowed DS to pretend capture him.
DH is from TT and they always talk about how bad the piracy there, ergo DS hates Pirates...

BTW we are ones that like the menu and dress up along with DS, however we are the bad guys. I am also one that would love to see a change though...

I never thought to dressing up as a good guy, such as the Royal Navy. I'll have to give that some serious thought.

How were adults very rude to you and your daughter?

I went into in detail in another thread, but basically they threatened to step on her if she got in their way and said it was my fault for not coming up earlier.

Yikes! I think I remember seeing that thread.

First the dinner for pirate night is terrible. The ribs were so bad I couldn't even eat them. I hate to waste meat I tried but couldn't eat it. The coconut banana is really good thou.

The show is terrible until the end right before the fireworks. Fireworks is good since you are out to sea.

Too long of a line for the Buffett. We are eating 10k plus calories a day I don't need to be standing in a long line for mediocre food. I just get some pizza.

Looking at the menu I noticed that for all 6 cruises I have eaten the exact same meal each time. Some of the dishes I'd like to try I can't eat due to food allergies (and even with advance notice the galley couldn't prepare them so I could eat them).

I've watched the fireworks twice from the deck above the stage, then twice from the adult only area, and the last two times from the Promenade Deck. It's a nice show, but I prefer to see it without the crowds.

I've never been to the buffet because we've always had second seating and I'm still full by the time the buffet comes out. Checked it out on the first cruise but I've never eaten anything.

I've run into Captain Jack a few times. The last time he came up to me as I was enjoying an adult beverage and asked if I was drinking rum. I told him no, I was drinking a single malt whisky from Scotland. He screwed up his face and said "I'm sooooo sorry for you, mate!" and staggered away.

We also have problems with dinner on Pirate night because of allergies. After fighting the crowds a few times, I would be lying if I said that I didn't want to skip the party the last time. I do like the atmosphere of the ship that night, but as DD15 gets older and more jaded, the party and fireworks aren't as fun to see through her eyes. We'll see if we go to it again this July, but I'd prefer to spend it at Currents or Meridian with a cocktail.

We've enjoyed Pirate Night and try to always get the dining rotation (never assured but try and has worked out) that puts in Animators that night to keep the theme going with the atmosphere and there. Every night will have items on the menu one does not like each rotation but to be honest, there is more I enjoy on the pirate night menu than a few of the other nights. The deck show is good for the younger ones but the crowds can be too much (we do from the upper deck to avoid the worst of). Fireworks, been there, done that, listened to the short show from our cabin last cruise. Enjoyed our 1st cruise, less so the 2nd time, the 3rd time felt neighbourhood shows have run longer with more variety, and since we take a pass on waiting with the crowds for.

Pirate night is the best! My kids and I are dressed up by 4pm and doing whatever trivia contests they have, the photos with the characters, the parties, etc. Such a fun night!

But the menu is definitely my least favorite.

After reading the comments on the "terrible" Pirate night menu I just made a reservation for Palo. Hmmm... I wonder if that's the strategy to fill the adult restaurants that night. :ssst:

We enjoy Pirate Night, but we've learned to pick and choose what we participate in. We actually quite enjoy the menu that night. But then we also love Cariocas and many folks complain about that venue on these boards, so our palates may be different - :P. Dressing up for us consists of some bandanas we purchased for our very first cruise and continue to bring when there is a pirate night on our sailing. We do enjoy watching the others that go all out - kudos to them! We aren't huge fans of the show - especially the revamped one, so usually wait until it's about time for the fireworks and try to find a quiet(er) space to watch. Yes, the fireworks are kind of lame compared to land based shows (heck, our friend had far better ones at her wedding), but I don't think that's the point. What's cool for us is that they are shooting them off of a cruise ship! Sorry, that just gets me every time. I can't lie. My son says I'm an old softie. :-) We never do the buffet as we have late dinner seating, but have seen many, many folks enjoying it.

As others have noted, first timers give it a chance. Check out the menus online to see if there is something to your liking. Take in the show, but maybe try to avoid the masses. Enjoy the fireworks - small fireworks are better than no fireworks in my book! If you aren't still full from dinner, check out the buffet. Just because it doesn't entice some, doesn't mean you won't love it.

We did not have one on our last cruise as it was one of the Frozen itineraries. We skipped the Frozen stuff in it's entirety - sorry that is just not something I can wrap my head around, but if they have a Pirate Night on our next cruise - Canadian Coastline - I'm sure we will check it out.
