Pin Trading - Crap pin from CM

I'm not sure who to contact over this - or if I even should, but this has me very frustrated so I figured I'd at least ask here first.

We just got back from our trip, 6 nights at GCH and 5 days in the parks (although on the last we upgraded to AP!). On our 2nd last morning there we had breakfast at Goofy's Kitchen with our 3 kids (2, 4 and 6). On the way out the kiddo's stopped to play in that Autopia car, and then a CM at the DVC booth stopped us to give the kids stickers. My 6 year old noticed she had pins and asked me if I had his lanyard to trade pins.

He has about 15-17 pins, all of which we've either bought while on a Disney trip or a few that came with out AAA packages - either way all legit Disney pins with the Mickey head back (although we need to buy those locking back since we've lost 2 pins...) Anyways, I had his pins, took out the lanyard, he chose one to trade and I put the rest away. We walked over and after looking at her lanyard he selected a teeny tiny windsurfing Mickey. First impression from me was that I'd never seen a pin like this and it seemed weird. Like very light weight and cheap. I thought about saying something to her as we left but didn't - I wish I had.

Anyways, I asked him if he wanted a different one and he said no he liked this one and wanted it for his 4 year old Mickey loving brother. So she takes the pin off her lanyard and we trade. He hands it to me and the back is a normal pin back (gold with the squeeze things) and I thought that was weird since they're always Mickey backs. I put it away because I'd read that CM's could only trade actual Disney pins, and kind of forgot about it due to trip excitement. I meant to ask another CM later at the Pin store but forgot. :sad2:

So we get home and I get the pins out. The 'new' pin is broken into 3 peices. It's been stored with all our other pins - which are just fine. This pin is clearly cheap plastic that's coated with something to look like another disney pin. I searched online and can find no reference of this being a true Disney trading pin. I'm pretty sure we got ripped off by a CM.

So now we're out a pin (which I've always paid between $8-15), and my son is heartbroken. It was the only pin he traded the entire trip, and now it's trash.

I saved the 3 peices, thinking maybe I should mail them off to Disney so they can see it's a piece of junk pin - but then I think, they won't care. I have no idea about the female CM's name only the time/day she was working at the DVC booth. I feel like they need to let her know to closely watch the pins she's trading, not get in trouble, just make sure no other guests get ripped off.

So, I'm out a pin, my son is crushed, and I'm frustrated. I'm assuming there's nothing that can be done, but should I at least contact someone to let them know of this? As it was it seemed like very few CM's had pins to trade this trip unlike our last trip where 90% of them seemed to have pins. So we were so excited to find someone to trade with.

It's not necessarily the fault of the CM. Most of them are not major pin traders in their off time, so it is unlikely for most of them to spot a fake. Also, so long as it has Disney on the back of the pin, they are required to trade for it. I know some CM's will try to take the junk off their lanyard, but a couple of things may have happened:
1) The person who traded that pin to the CM was there just slightly before you and the CM couldn't get a replacement pin quickly enough
2) The CM didn't recognize it as a fake or problem pin.

Remember, CM's who wear lanyards are required to trade, and there are many people who 'work' the system, trading junk for the coveted Hidden Mickey pins. Thus junk or common pins are often on the CM's lanyards to trade to other guests. Sorry you had a problem with the pin, but in this case I don't think that the CM should be blamed.

What is a hidden mickey pin? It sounds like something I might want to covet:)

Hidden Mickey pins are pins you can only get by trading with CM's or other individuals who have already traded with CM's. They normally have a small Mickey Head someplace on the pin, they aren't really "Hidden Mickeys" because you can see them but that's how you know. Also, the back should tell you if it's a Hidden Mickey or Cast Lanyard.

OP, sorry your DS made a bad trade, a lot of CM's know nothing about trading and they will take anything. I've personally traded for some "crap" pins and so have my kids. I do keep them but I also know your frustration with it. It sounds like your DS got a Sedesma, those are pretty crappy, I've got one that's a Jiminy Cricket, DD traded for it from a CM too. I don't think Disney will do anything for you unfortunately, this kind of thing happens all the time. There have been many times when I've seen a "bad" pin on a CM's lanyard and let them know, most of them remove it immediately but some don't. Anyway, I don't have anything like what you got but if your DS has a favorite character I will see what I've got in my stash and maybe I can send a replacement for him. From one trader to another. :) Let me know if you'd be interested. :)

I'm pretty sure we got ripped off by a CM.

Wow, that's pretty harsh considering most CMs wear the lanyards by choice. That and they don't have a mental encyclopedia of all "Official" disney pins. Before blaming the CM, why not blame the Guest who convinced them to trade for that particular pin in the first place, which unfortunately ended up in your hands?

Regarding the backs: we got four PPH pins during our stay the other weekend, from PPH as part of the Big Kahuna family package. They had squeeze backs.

So, and I hope this is true, perhaps they are starting to change from their useless mickey backs to something that stands a chance at keeping the pin on!

That pin sounds super-cute. Can you glue it back together?

For the record, I don't trade, I just collect!

I just wanted to add that I hate the dang Mickey head backs. My pins fall off so many times. I almost lost a sparkly Belle pin a couple weeks ago. Luckily, it fell inside my jacket and I caught it. I keep saying I'm going to buy the screw on ones, but it seems like the squeezey kind would work just fine.

I think that many CMs are not aware of the difference between the good and "bad" pins. They trade with guests because guests like it. It may be worth telling Disney about the incident in the hopes that they try to institute better quality control, but I don't think the CM was trying to rip off your son. I think it was an honest mistake.

As for pinbacks, I only wear duplicates on my lanyard. That way, even if my locking back fails, I haven't lost an irreplacable pin. I keep my traders in a small pin book I bought at WDW a couple years back.

That way, even if my locking back fails...

And they certainly can fail! Any backing can come off, most definitely. We use the locking backs too, but haven't changed the PP ones over b/c of the squeezey backs. But the mickey head ones are the worst, in my experience.

This is actually a common issue with pin trading in the parks. A lot of people buy crap pins specifically to trade up for better quality pins from CMs. People buy bags of cheap pins from eBay and such in order to trade, and some don't care if they are real Disney pins or fakes. That's not to say there are no real Disney pins on eBay - there are.

I don't think you were ripped off by the CM or that they even would have known it was a fake. They are just so common in the park now that it's hard to make sure you are getting a good pin. I personally would not trade any pin that I've paid full price for (learned that lesson the same hard way you just did :sad2: ), but I do search for less expensive, real Disney pins that I will allow my son to trade, just for the fun of it. He has his collection pins and his trading pins, that way it's not such a big deal if he gets another fake and can still have the fun of trading.

I personally haven't had trouble with the locking backs on my lanyard, but I had a friend who had a pin fall off the locking back on his shirt while on Thunder Mountain. He didn't lose the pin though.

OP, I'm sorry you got a yucky pin - that isn't fun for you or your son. I don't know much about pin trading as we never really got into it.

Anyway, I don't have anything like what you got but if your DS has a favorite character I will see what I've got in my stash and maybe I can send a replacement for him. From one trader to another. :) Let me know if you'd be interested. :)

I just thought this was such a nice gesture. :thumbsup2 It is always great to see the friendliness and goodwill of other people here. Pixiewings71 - you are super sweet! :)

Thank You :) I just hate seeing others get taken advantage of by the not so honest pin traders. There are way too many of them out there. :)

Burnsidemommy,

I am sorry you got a fake pin and that your boy is crushed. Hopefully other memories of your vacation will make him realize it is just a pin. As others have said, you were not "ripped off by a CM." Those are not their pins so she would have no reason to intentionally trade you a fake. CMs are educated briefly about pins, but fakes pass through their hands innocently. This is why you want to educate yourself.

That said....
1. Call Disneyland Guest Relations (714-781-4000 is the main #). Tell them that your 6 yr old son got into pin trading on your recent visit and that upon returning home you and he realized that you received a fake pin which has since broke. Kindly ask if they would replace the pin, as you are out the cost of the one you traded. They may send you a Pixie Dust pin.

2. If you ever trade with a CM and get a metal backing, just tell them that you would like to keep your rubber Mickey backing.

3. I would suggest a little discussion with your boy explaining how pin trading works (not the CMs pins, 1000s trade from lanyard to lanyard every day, etc...) so that he does not hold any resentment toward CMs in the future when trading.

- Dreams

P.S. If you are paying $15/pin as you stated in your post, you are trading away VERY expensive pins. Right in DL, you can buy a little pack of 7 pins in Star Traders in Tomorrowland for $30 (coming out to just over $4/pin) to trade away to CMs.

Does every cast member have to be an expert at pin trading? I mean they get what, $8-9 an hour, MAYBE? They trade with people all day long, and somebody traded a crap pin to them, which eventually made it to your son.

When I hear about people who had a "less than magical" experience with a cast member, I try to keep in mind that these people make about the same amount of money an hour (many of them, not all) as the people that give me a McMuffin in the morning and don't even look me in the eye at the drivethrough.

We ask a lot of cast members: Some here expect them to be nearly child psychologists when it comes to upset kids, to be masters of traffic control no matter how fast a crowd forms, and to be as knowledgeable about all things Disneyland as many here are.

I hope ever CM starts with 6 months experience their first day on the job.

I know I'm pushing my luck, but can I share something?

I have a bad habit of opening these threads where it's clear that someone is sharing an honest complaint.

And then I myself get frustrated because they always begin something like: "We just got back from spending 5-8 days at the park, we stayed on property. We had a ton of fun. However I'm very upset because... (I got a corndog and it was burnt on the end, my balloon popped and the CM didn't give me a replacement, etc.)

I'm thinking in my head ok - $3000 trip, and $6 corndog. That's 1/5 of 1%.

I am sorry about these troubles of my yet-to-have-met friends. They're legitimate concerns - especially since they come from mothers who love their children. Just I'd hate to go on a trip with my wife, spend $3000 and or even the $300 that our family is able to spend - and have her spend even a minute worrying about a pin - even if baby bear is bummed. Baby bear just spent a week at the park! Woohoo!

Where is the original OP?
Why no response to all of our replies?

As the mother of a recent DL CM who wore a lanyard, I am finding it difficult to believe you were duped or taken advantage of or that one pin had such a huge affect on your entire vacation. REALLY?

Sunami's, earthquakes, Famine, disease, financial ruin, wars, tornado's, hurracaines, drought, Aids, car accidents, plane crashes, depression, suicide, starvation just to name a few.
For much of my adult life I have been a Chaplain and worked with tragedies that made my heart break.
Opps, should I add cheap Disney pins ???
I usually try to be sweet on these boards. Sometimes I just get angry.
Sorry
