I know I am late jumping in this thread, but I have to say that tattooing is part of my culture.

I don't want to upset anyone, but the way it has evolved does bother me because today it has taken a turn from something so spiritual and culturally meaningful to something trendy and fad-like. The co-opting thing just disturbs me altogether. I am like that about Trader Joe's, too, so take that with a grain of salt. ;)

...and the Asian characters? Ugh. At least get it right. lol Some of the meanings are distorted or end up meaningless when translated.

I've always wondered if people really know what they mean. I mean they could TELL you it means love....but really...... who knows:eek:

My sentiments exactly. People wanting to prove that they are 'different' decide to copy millions of others by getting inked, etc. I recently saw an Irish lad (flaming red hair, O'something name, etc) yap about the ugly tattoo circling his upper arm and talking about how it represents his tribe or something (I think he was claiming to be part Polynesian). He is a life-long Fort Worthian.

Now, if he had bar-b-que ribs tattooed on him, it would explain his connection to Fort Worth.

That is exactly why I took what I wanted to a local chinese college professor and asked him what it meant....( I said it was for a poem my son was doing and he had to have two chinese symbols on it pertaining to his poem) after I got the OK on what it was, then I had it inked on my body...........I think the script of Asian symbols is beautiful, that is why I like having them. Mine our love, and happiness on my left wrist above my watch then further up my arm is one for Queen on dh chest he has one for King.

I think you have to have trust in your artist and where you get your information from......if not you could have symbols on it saying any number of stupid things.

I like to get a little crab because I'm from Maryland and my birth sign is Cancer. I'd like to get the little crab sign for Cancer, but it looks like a 69 and I just know people will take that the wrong way!:sad2:

Hey Myst....I agree Ami is mmmmm mmmmmm goooooood! While drinking with Mr. Garver...he would look at who was coming up to him next at the bar and say to us "50 bucks they ask me where Ami is." It was always women in their 30's and 40's...and gay men, lmao!!

:rotfl: Poor Chris. I mean that in a funny way though. Although I think Ami is hot and I would love to butt heads with him I still think Chris is my tat man! Ask my husband. I've been telling him forever I want a Chris tat.

Oh man! I love that I found this thread! I used to have a nose ring, I have a belly ring, and I have two tattoos! I'm 20, so I know a ton of people my age who have them. It is funny though because my parents (who don't have tattoos or piercings) approve of this more than some of my friends! My tattoos are not always visible so sometimes when people first see them if they don't approve I get a "Ohhh...I didn't know you had tattoos" like its so bad! LOL
