Hey! That's my sight! Okay..really it's the back of the site I've always wanted! I am going to be at the WL in May..and I'm going to scout out my site for our upcoming FW trip. Love seeing photos of actual sites. Really gives you a good idea of how our own rigs will fit. Love that location in the 300 loop. I've heard some sites in that loop can be small but I seem to remember the first couple on the right as being pretty spacious..and the one in the photo having the access out the back. Looks great..thanks for the photo!

From what I've heard that there are oganisms in the water amoeba not sure on the spelling of that. I think you want to avoid them getting into your ears..or open parts of the body. From what I understand this is an issue in Fla., with shallow lake waters. From what I've heard when there it is more of an issue during the warmer times of the year. Obviously they have water sking and parasailing (much as I enjoy water sking..with snakes and aligators in or near the waters..don't think I'd be doing that in Fla either..but that's just me) I guess it would be alright for the kids to play at the waters edge.
Let's face it, at one time many of us went to River Country that was connected to Bay Lake water. Of course..they have shut that down now..hmmm Go to the pool.

Folks, if the risk of infection was significant enough, do you really think they would allow waterskiing??? When you fall it is not unusual to injest water up the nose or down the throat. I am not doubting that the water could be cleaner but believe the real issue is economics/liability. They would have to staff the beach with lifeguards....

It is a regular ritual for my kids to build sandcastles at the beach. We let them in the water but only up to the knees. This is one of my kids favorite things to down (we even have a pretty big collection of sand toys).

Alright Shannone, I can handle seeing horse pics and Whispering Canyon pics but don't show all the fun stuff like the pool. I'm so jealous I could make a ressie and drive down this weekend lol.

I seem to remember reading about a young boy who had these organisms effect his brain..and it resulted in death. Certainly that would be a health issue..and I'm sure Disney doesn't want to have anything to do with the liability issues involved. Also when you water ski...you sign a paper that indicates it's at your own risk.
I do remember a time when you could swim at FW... many years ago when river country was open we swam there..we also swam at the beach. I wouldn't want to swim there now..after I've seen the snakes in the water at the WL. Same body of water..so I think I'll pass.

However if this is a health issue, they are right to warn people about it so you can make an informed decision as to whether you choose to go in the water. Be it water sking or playing at the waters edge. Honestly, I'd worry more with little ones and their ability to fight off infection, more than that of an adult. Especially that when kids are little everything goes to their mouth ...nose or ears.
If you ask me it's another reason for refurbishment of the pool..with a new one and a great slide to go with it!


The photo of the kids on he horses is great. I've heard they go really slow...is it just a walk..or do they pick up the pace and trot at all? If you don't mind, what do they charge..and did you think it was worth the price?

He just asked for a refill and that is what they brought him. The people next to us were given a teeny, tiny glass with that same long straws. Our favorite thing though was if you ask for ketchup, the server screams "ketchup" and other customers come running with bottles of ketchup until you end up with about 10 bottles at your table. And they stay there until the next time someone else needs ketchup and then your party gets to take all those bottles to them !! The kids thought it was pretty neat. They do alot of neat things like that, but I don't want to give it all away !!

We were there before..and my son got the ketchup treatment...but I have never seen those HUGE mugs. My kids are big on refills, to the point of embarrassement. The first thing they ask a server when we eat out is "Are there refills?"...so I am anxious to see what happens when they ask this at the Whispering Canyon. We have an ADR for the night of our arrival in May.

EXACTLY !!! That whole organism in the water, and the water will make you deathly sick stuff is the DUMBEST thing I have ever heard. Hey, we (Disney) are a multi-billion dollar company, and our water is polluted to the point it might kill you, but go ahead and get in it and ski or parasail....I don't think so. If you have documented proof, let's hear about it. Otherwise, it's just spreading unfounded rumors !

In defense of those discussing the amoeba theory, I will tell you that I clearly remember that there used to be signs posted at the lake warning people about this. When we first started bringing our kids to the Fort in about 1998, the beach was still open for swimming, and there was a roped off area where swimming was allowed. But it wasn't long after that, I would say around 1999 that they closed the swimming area. For a time after that, there were signs up warning of amoebas or parasites or something.

That being said, I agree that it is interesting that WDW still allows water skiing and parasailing, and also did you know that they host huge triathlon events every year where the contestants swim in the lake from FW beach?

Thanks I remembered reading about the 15 year old boy. Guess I'm not that "dumb" after all. Appreciate the documentation. I certainly wouldn't want to take the chance with a child in the water..considering that their immune systems are more delicate to begin with. As for water sking...you are still signing a waiver. Disney is covered either way..whether it's because you took a spill or wind up with a single celled organism in your brain! They post signs indicating you should not swim. I've also never wound up at the bottom of a lake while water sking ...where apparently these organism are more apt to be. I'm not a great skier..but even I've managed to stay off the bottom. I'm also wondering when the triatholon is held....as to avoid the very hot and humid times of the year...when this is a greater concern than the cooler months?..don't know..but I'd certainly hope so.

Well, it still doesn't prove that the ameobas existed in Bay Lake, only that it happens in Florida lakes, including some cases that happened in Orlando. Not that it couldn't or didn't happen at Bay Lake, but you also can't instantly make the leap that the problem did exist.

Personally, I think it was a combination of events (including probably the perceived or present threat of ameoba contamination). You don't see too many freshwater swimming lake areas any more in Florida, it was bound to happen.

I don't take credit for this picture, but since I've seen some "older" Fort pictures being thrown around, I thought I would remind everyone of a great Fort tradition that is no longer with us.

I wish I had gotten to see some of this stuff like the train and River Country. Too bad FW doesn't replace some of the things that get aged. BTW, I was going to post some pics from our last trip but I think ynottonny has already covered the whole place lol. Just messin with you tony. I enjoy seeing the pics even if I just got home from the fort yesterday.

When we went last month DD and I walked out to the swamp trail and it was being removed piece by piece. Now that looks like in it's day that was a fun and relaxing walk. No leverage to make FW do a thing stinks. What will be next on the abandoned list?

Oh there was a time when profits were not the #1 priority..........

It was a rare and some might say......" magical "....time at the fort..
