Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, Maine, with outbuildings. The red building in the center is the Bell House. The white tower behind it held the weights which ran a clockwork mechanism to ring the bell at regular intervals. The red building on the left is where stored the fuel [whale oil, kerosene] for the light atop the lighthouse. It was so far removed for safety. If it caught on fire, it would not destroy the lighthouse itself.
