Photoshop Elements

My computer was heading downhill and I had it repaired. Unfortunately everything was wiped clean and I am starting over. I just reinstalled Photoshop Elements 5.0 and need to get my pictures back into the organizer. I have most of my photos (maybe 700 or so) saved on various disks. I also have them all backed up on my computer that I can get to.

How do I get all of them back on to Photoshop Elements? Please keep it VERY simple.....I am still green when it comes to computers.

i don't use the organizer but can't you just redownload them? if it's set up to save to the organizer i would think it would just save them all there. however if you don't have the tags and stuff saved you'd probably have to start over there. i know i have to have the "save to organizer box" unchecked on the downloader or it automatically saves them to the organizer if i happen to open the organizer for some reason( which i don't want to do)
so make sure you have "save to organizer" as the setting in the downloader then try re downloading and see if they go to the organizer after you open it

I don't use elements but most programs have an "import selection." So you go to File>Import>Folder and select them from where they are, on your hard drive or CD/DVD.

If I remember correctly, I'll try to walk you through this. The same thing happened to me recently on vacation.

1) Double click on Adobe Photoshop Elements and choose "View/Organize Photos".

2) Choose the icon at the top underneath the 'Window' menu. It should look like a camera with three pictures behind it.

3) Choose where you're pulling the pictures from: Files & Folders, Camera & Card Reader, etc.

4) And that should take care of it!!

Thanks for your help! It was easy to do (and it worked!)

WinXP:

PS Elements 5

Preloading a small memory card for a photoframe to be given for holiday gift. Not familiar with these frames.

This Digital Photo Frame is a 16x9 aspect, 800x480 pixels.

In PS Elements, I crop each pic to 16" x 9"
Then resize photo to 800 pixel width, constraining proportions it sets the height at 450 pixels, resolution 72 pixels/in. Seems I am wasting the frame real estate.

Change the crop tool for 15" x 9"
Then resize photo to 800 pixel width, constraining proportions it sets the height at 480 pixels, resolution 72 pixels/in.

Each photo comes to ~ 400k.

Questions:
Which above crop/resize/resolution is best? or alternate?

Will the frame make use of the 400k pics, or should I reduce quality to something less?

I just purchased the XSI (my first SLR) and took my first pics over the weekend. I have Photoshop Elements, but have never really used it because I previously had a Kodak camera and used their software; just never took the time to learn Photoshop Elements.

Now, the XSI came with some photo programs, but I thought the Photoshop Elements would be the best to use. The problem I am having is once I got the photos downloaded into the program and I tried to resize them for the web, I keep getting an error message that the image is too large to perform the resize for the web.:confused3

Is there a setting on the camera I am missing, or should I use one of the programs that came with the camera. I still have the pics on the memory card so I could always just download them again.

I would deeply appreciate some help for this novice (I hope to take a class this February to learn how to really use this camera!)

You're right. If the screen's pixel dimensions are 800 x 480, then it's aspect ratio is 5:3 (aka 15:9), not 16:9. Of the two methods you presented, I think the second one (crop to 5:3 [15:9] then resize width to 800 pixels for landscape orientation or to 480 pixels for portrait orientation) is the best. The images will appear to be larger if you maximize the vertical space and have bars going down the right and left edges of the frame. Don't forget to sharpen the images after you resize them!

What quality setting are you using to get 400k sized 800x480 jpgs? For email I export I have a preset export setting in Lightroom that exports 100% quality jpgs at 800 x 600 to a folder, and automatically runs a droplet that lab sharpens those jpgs and saves them as Quality 10 (Maximum) jpg at 100K to 200K a piece. 400K sounds too large to me.

The frame is a gift to the grandparents of my son, so would be nice to have an app which would auto-crop in batch to 800x480 for their pics, for those times they wish to edit photos prior to frame display. Though they have Elements & I can show. I'll take advice to maximize vertical as preference when needed.

The size of my pre-loaded pics are rather random. After cropping to 15x9, 400k is what remains on my better quality shots. But since the photoframe is wrapped, I can't test whether these 400k pics would appear equal to a 150k shot. Working with a 32mb xD card, so don't want to waste the ram if not necessary.

Also getting them a 1GB Memory Stick Pro so they can simply exchange 'sticks' with Sony camera for simplicity.

Have you tried the batch conversions in Irfanview (free software)? I've never personally tried the crop conversion but the resizing works great. Did all of mine for the photoframe (1600 pix) down to around 640 x 480 and didn't take long at all to do with this software. It has capabilities for batch autocrop but I haven't tried it.

Calculated pixels per inch at 116ppi (8" diagonal display with 800x480 resolution)

Found a shortcut: enter 800 px x 480 px with 116ppi within the Crop Tool.

Still unsure what compression setting, have been setting compression to result in ~200kB.

Guess I'll find out how well it works on the 25th!

You could set the PPI to 72 or 3,000,000 and it won't matter, as long as you have 800 pixels by 480 pixels. To crop and resize in one step in Elements select the crop tool and enter 800 px and 480 px for landscape orientation; you can leave the resolution field (PPI) blank. Your cropped selection will automatically be resized to 800 x480 pixels. Note that when you use this one-stop method Elements will use the default bicubic interpolation, which is not always the best choice. For image in the portrait orientation just resize the image to 480 px height and constrain proportions. Oh, and don't forget to sharpen the image after resizing and before saving.

Judging by the file sizes you're getting I think that your compression is unnecessarily low. When you save a jpg using "Save As" or "Save for Web", Elements gives options for the quality on a scale of 1 to 12, where 1 has the most compression (lower quality), and 12 has the least compression (best quality). The preview adjusts as you change the quality setting, so set the preview to 100% zoom and see for yourself what is the lowest quality setting that you find acceptable and use that. Personally, I use between 8 and 10 for this purpose; it really depends on the image. The quality at settings 12 and 10 are virutally indistinguishable, and you may not notice any important degradation of quality at 8. You can shave a tiny bit more off the file size by not embedding the color profile, since the digital frame most likely assumes sRGB and doesn't color manage.

Thanks for the helpful tips.

Preview is a good idea, but I assume I'd have to change display settings to match the pictureframe 800x480. I don't think I have that option in WinXP.

Out of my hands now: xD card wrapped and under tree. All that's left is to see the results of my efforts and provide a little Elements training. Oh, & the Memory Stick has yet to arrive USPS -hoping by Wednesday.

WHAT?!?!? You don't need to change any display options in XP. 800 pixels is 800 pixels, whether it's on your computer monitor or on the digital frame. All you need to do is view the image at 100% zoom in Elements, and it will be 800 pixels wide x 480 pixels tall on your monitor, just as it would be on the digital frame.

Hi! Has anyone had any problems using photoshop elements 6.0 downloading RAW photos? I am using Camera Raw 5.2 plug-in.

I shot some RAW+ JPEG photos on my December trip to WDW and everything was working fine until one of my downloads this morning. Then, it claimed that there were errors in some of the files (some of my Nikon Raw files). I redownloaded the plugin but I am wondering if anyone else has had a problem.

Sorry, no help here. I use PSE 5 and have not had any difficulty once I got the right plug in going.

Dumb question: Have you tried restarting your computer? It is usually the first thing I try when things that should work, don't.

Just yesterday I connected a card reader to my Mac to download a few shots I had taken on my new D300. The computer didn't see the card reader. Then I tried a direct camera connection. Nothing. So I restarted -- and everything worked fine.

Not to say this will solve the problem, but it certainly won't hurt.
