Photoshop Elements

I do not feel that 1 book is any better then another,, but when it comes to the way my brain processes information, I like to get the books that have lots of pics on how to do something,,, that has always been an easier way for me to learn then just reading some dry words on a page. I have a B & N near me that I go to and there are perhaps 4 to 6 different books/authors out there explaining everything you need to know. Just make sure you get the book that is for E4. And remember,, MAKE BACKUP COPIES OF YOUR PICS """BEFORE""" STARTING TO WORK ON THEM.

I have heard that Scott Kelby's books on both digital photography and Photoshop are excellent. I too am a novice PSE user and this is the book I am going to buy.

Good luck!!

Scott Kelby has 2 great books that are helpful. For PSE4, there is a book called Photoshop Elements 4 for Digital Photographers. It is an excellent book and has step-by-step instructions on how to do specific things. The other one is Photoshop Elements Down and Dirty Tricks (it is only out for version 3 right now).

This is an awesome forum and this is my first post.

Tom :)

welcome tom and thanks for the recommendation...i got photo.e4 about a month ago and can do some basic stuff but layering is beyond me so i wanted to get something to use

Welcome Tom!! As for tips on the PSE4 - the copy thing is essential and another suggestion, is if you know someone who already has it - a one on one show me session is great!! I have a friend who uses it professionally and she was super helpful on showing me a few shortcuts on things. Other than that - just get on and pic a few photos and PLAY!!! Enjoy your new toys!! :thumbsup2

Welcome Tom and thanks for the book suggestion! Yes, this is an awesome forum, but you'll be sorry you found it----I've found myself neglecting housework, etc. just so I can spend more time on this board and check out everybody's pictures. I used to be quite happy with my old Canon A70, but after seeing the pictures here, I went out and got myself a brandy-new Canon S3 IS. (Not that I'm complaining, mind you :goodvibes)

And now everywhere I go, I'm thinking "Hmmm, that'll make a neat picture."

Scott Kelby puts out some great books, the "________ for Digital Photographers" series is a must.

If you just enter tutorials in google it will come with loads that you can choose from.

a question about the copy saving...i knowafter you edit it, it comes up and asks (when you save it) do you want to save as a copy or replace the original, i always do it as a copy. i also have a disk of all the originals

but are you saying to do it some other way???

i have had the video professor 3 cd tutor for photoshop ( big version, not elements) but havdn't looked at it. i was going over it today and it has a instructions for few features elements 4 doesn't have ( folder browser for one, some of the color pallettes) it seems pretty good and you do it along with the cd so it seems to work well...i don't think it's cheap( i got it with an entertainment book or some other promo offer) but it is good so far...i actually think i get the little bit of layers info so far and i have only done cd 1

We picked this up last week and I've been playing around some. I've been able to figure out some things but I cannot seem to grasp the whole cloning thing. I am sure I am following the direction right but it's not working. Anyone care to explain to me how this is done.
Thanks!

I don't have version 5, but I'm assuming it's the same. Go somewhere on the photo that you want to clone. Press the "alt" key and left click your mouse at the same time. That gives you your sampling. Then go to where you want to clone the sampling to and left click. Easy peasy. I suggest getting an Elements book, Scott Kelby's are very good. Also, the video tutorials at Adobe are pretty good too.

I'll give it a try again. I was holding down alt and then left clicking but not at the same time. Would that make the difference?

Yes, that would make a difference. The method is: hold down any ALT key with your free hand; position and click down the mouse; release the mouse; release the ALT key.

Hmmmm, what you're describing should work. When you click down to do the sampling, you should get a bullseye like thingie in the circle. Make sure you're working with a fairly large brush, at least for right now. Also, make sure you're not on the "pattern stamp tool". You can switch them at the top, far left in the tool bar.

Be aware that the bulls eye moves in relationship with the cloning tool. In other words you move the cloning tool up one inch while cloning the bulls eye will move up one inch. So let's say you want the area you are fixing to be blue you will put the bulls eye into a blue area. As you go up and the bulls eye starts to go into another color you will have to reposition it back into the blue area by doing the alt click. Some, as I did when I first started doing cloning, think the bulls eye stays in the same spot.

Hello,

I'm hoping to be given Photoshop Elements 5 for my birthday but I'd also like a book to go with it as I've never used anything like it before!!

I read somewhere on this board that people have recommended Scott Kelby's books. My question is, do those books only apply to people who have the full Photoshop package, or do they also help people who only have the Elements version?

Can anyone recommend any other books which would help a complete beginner like me use Elements 5?

Thanks a lot,

Vick :yay:

I was in the bookstore the other day and did not see any books on E5,, figure they r a month or 2 behind the E5 software hitting the stores,, When you finally get the book, just make sure you r getting the E5 book and not the E4 or E3 books that r still being sold for users of those programs. There are also books out there for the full-blown PS program so make sure you don't buy them unless you receive that program.
