Thanks..ran another search and there they were..I kind of "back doored" it to get there..LOL. But I was able to get the plug in where in belonged. Thanks for suggesting I give it another try.

You are welcome!

next on my list to buy is one of these...if you have one which one and what do you like or hate about it, if you have upgraded why, etc...

i know regular photoshop would be too frustrating right now,

i have nero photosnap, arcsoft photostudio , a digital photo something that came with my rebel (but i think is mostly for raw),zoombrowser for library, HP image zone, kodak whatever it's called( those 2 very basic)...would the element be more advanced than what i have or just the same old same old. 3 is rated higher than 4 and i can get it for $30 but not sure how old the reviews are
thanks

At that price range I found I liked Microsoft's Digital Image Suite much better and easier to use than photoshop elements ( I was using Elements 4). The biggest annoyance was it's inabilaty to handle file or folder renames that occured outside of the application. Even Picassa does a much better job than photoshop had with this.

Now the full blown Photoshop product is really nice, but does have a learning curve and a cost factor equal to a lensless Rebel XT.

I download from compact flash to a laptop thru a card reader in the (pci?) port. A full sandisk extreme III 2 gig card takes 1/2 hour to download.

I don't use the photo application interface to download images, I get better results using the software provided with the Camera (View/Download Images using Canon Camera Window), I think it is part of Zoombrowser for Canon. I figured out the hard way that both MicroSoft and PhotoShop tends to drop a couple of the exif attributes in their interface.

I also use a CF adapter that plugs in a USB and plug the card directly in there. Downloads from the camera directly can be slower, plus using that tiny connector does run the risk of damaging camera board that the plug component connects to the camera with.

If any of the software is slow down loading images or starting the software up it is usually due to not having enough PC RAM memory. I run 512MB (2X256MB) which is borderline for post processing. Eventually I am going to upgrade to 2 GB (2X1024MB). This will probably be 1 GB at a time and will make a huge difference to both downloads and imaging. :artist:

Mike,

Can you explain a little more about downloading with the Canon camera software? I have Photoshop Elements 4 and when I plug my card reader in, Photoshop opens and loads everything onto the computer. I have never even bothered putting the Canon software on our computer.

What type of information are you losing? As it is, PSE 4 really drags down our computer speed. We are in the process of looking for a new computer (debating whether it is wise to wait for the new Microsoft OS, Vista, or stick with the known XP). We have already added RAM.

Little confused here.

Whenever I download from a card reader to the computer it is a simple copy and paste. What you are doing is copying from a removable drive (the computer treats the reader as a drive) to another drive whether it be the C drive, external hard drive or CD/DVD.

It never takes long for me to download.

After the pictures are downloaded then Elements or program of choice is activated to post process.

i ordered pe4 for $30 from hopefully a reputable guy( he said he mailed it so i'll know for sure in a wk). i like it better than the trial i got from microsoft...

You gutta get yourself one that downloads though a 2.0 USB slot. It is SOOOO much faster.

As for software. I was downloading though the Nikon software, but thats a bit on the fritz right now so I just go to My Computer and drag the picture files from the media card right directly to my picture folder on the hard drive. 60 2.5mb pics transfered in about 15 seconds.

I can also transfer using PSE or MS Picture IT!, but then I have to actually open those programs and then go though all the click this then click that then click this, open that, bla bla bla. Going though My Computer I've found to be the fastest thus far.

is there any way to transfer the whole bunch you just downloaded from the organizer to the photobin in the pse4 editor? i tried dragging from the organizer but just got a cirle with a line through it once i got out of the organizer box

If you really want the full photoshop, I got mine through a service that sells to students. I got the full CS2 suite for about $300..... Had to fax a copy of son's report card in to prove I had a student. But it is the full program at less than half price. If your interested, google on student edition software.

I use a USB CF reader and never selected the 'always use this program' option for versitility, so I get to select the download utility. As far as information lost from PE and MS I hadn't realized it until I started using the exif data to analize lens usage and specific settings. Which you would think that it really shouldn't even touch that stuff as it is embedded in the jpeg file itself.

The big thing that jumped out to me is the lens used was missing from the data, along with owner information and a couple minor settings. They all seem to capture the focal mm, f-stop, ISO, speed, etc .. but some of the other details get dropped by the import.

Mike

nero photosnap doesn't include the lens data either. i noticed it was missing from all of my pictures saved there...i wonder where it is being dropped, when it leaves the initial download? i know it's in zoombrowser but if i edit with nero it isn't in the file there and not sure about arcsoft

I have PE4 and like it for the most part. The one suggestion I would make is getting an additional manual as the one that comes with it isn't very helpful. Most of my learning has been through trial and error, followed by a lot of unmentionable language!!! Any bookstore should have tons of other books about PE, look through them and good luck!

DH just gave me a present - Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0!!! I was hinting for it as a Christmas present, but he said that since I'm enjoying my new Canon S3 IS so much he thought he'd give it to me early! I can't wait to start playing with it!!!

Any tips for a beginner? I've NEVER used something like this before, I've only edited my pix with the Canon software that came with my camera.

1 suggestion and 1 must do

The suggestion... get a good book that includes tutorials....

the must do.... make a copy of any pic your going to work on, and work on the copy... that way you always have the original to go back to...

I am curious, do you know how much he paid? I saw that Elements 5 was now out at Circuitcity for about 100 bucks. I also agree with Master Mason,, go to a bookstore and get a good book on using the program,,

No, he won't tell me how much he paid. I asked him if he got it at Best Buy, because every time he buys something there he always forgets to take the rewards card. All he said was that he got it cheaper somewhere else, and there was some kind of rebate on it - he has to send in for the rebate by the end of Oct., which is another reason he gave it to me now instead of waiting until Christmas.

And it figures - PSE5 is already out, huh? Oh well.

Hey---is there any specific tutorial book that's better than the others? I was going to head to Barnes & Noble and see what they have. Maybe one of those "Dummies" books? I think I'm going to need one with a lot of illustrations.
