Photographing Pets

Pea-n-me - love your doggies! Great shots - your daughter has a good eye - must have got it from her mother!! I'm a sucker for GSD's, too, so love seeing all the shots.

deletedpenguin - love your doggies, too. How lovely to get them in or a swim. I'm afraid Charotte is not too fond of the water. I'd love to take her for a swim!!

Greta's first day at "dog school" (puppy kindergarten):

I like the back lit silhouette look of this one:

I hope nobody minds me joining in! I'm no-where near a professional photographer, but I've got a keen interest! I also don't have a dog, but I've got some photos of my Hamster, Link:

deletedpenguin, what beautiful pictures of your dogs! How did you get them together like that? Did you do any post processing? Do you shoot in RAW?

Thanks! I took the photos over the course of an hour or so. My trick to the photos is to take heaps, and one or two is bound to come out. :) I did a bit of processing in Lightroom, and yes, I shoot in RAW.

Thanks! The lab is mine, the golden is my girlfriends parents dog, and the third (not sure what it is), is my girlfriends sisters dog. Easter was actually the first time my dog (Jake) went swimming on his own. Growing up so fast. :)

Thanks! I did take the Sydney Opera House photo as well. It's not the highest resolution (I took it with a Canon point and shoot 4mp camera), but here's the highest resolution, if you'd like to use it as a wallpaper.

What lens did you use on this one?

I took it with the Sigma 10-20.

Thanks for sharing.....I have been looking at your photos on flickr...WOW!! You are very talented....are you a professional photographer? If not you should be! :thumbsup2

Sorry if this is a bit off topic, but I would love to have a few suggestions on ways to photograph this dog. He is very unique, and loves to ham it up for the camera, but I cannot seem to find a really great place to take a pic of him....I am very novice, and just getting used to settings etc other than a point and shoot....thx so much!!

Hi Tiff. Chinese Crested? I just googled to be sure and see there are lots of nice pictures of the breed in various settings, some fun like the bathtub, and even one doing agility, LOL. I love pets as a subject because they'll go anywhere and do anything yet you won't hear any complaints from them if the session gets long or you have to reshoot. Just use your imagination - and oh yes, keep your camera with you a lot. Go somewhere fun with your dog and start shooting.

Personally, I like to use natural light as much as possible to avoid eye glare and overexposure, ie too much brightness. (This could be important to you somewhat where your dog has skin and not fur - not really sure.)

If using a flash indoors, it's best to somehow "diffuse" the flash so it's not as harsh to the picture or shining in the pets eyes. Someone recently suggested putting a tissue over the flash. I also saw something recently to fashion an old plastic film container to fit over the flash (when it's up) to diffuse or soften it (something I'm going to try myself and keep in my camera bag). If you have an external flash you can point it upward and not right at the subject.

And remember basic compositional skills. Filling the frame makes for really nice pictures, especially if the background is visually uninteresting or distracting. You don't have to get the whole pet in every picture, either. Look back over some pictures on this thread - you might see just a head or an eye, etc. Your dog seems to have great facial expressions, see what you can do to capture some of them. And be sure to post them here so we can enjoy them, too.

Have fun! paw:

Thank you so much for your help!! Yes he is a Chinese Crested, who has done everything from being a couch potato to dog shows, agility and a best friend to my DD. I will take all of the tips, and go have some fun with him once all of our snow is gone, and it is warmer out!! Thanks again!!
