Hadn't planned on taking the dogs out this morning before work, but it was simply too beautiful to stay inside!!

We do an annual Halloween photo with the cats, since we don't have kids yet - and send it out to all our family :)

Wanted to share a photo of our newest family member, Tilly. She's a 2 year old rescued Bassett Hound. We brought her home last Saturday. I think there will be plenty of photo ops with this cutie.

This guy is not my pet. He is actually in Ukraine, living outside the Lviv airport(my DH gave him a piece of cheese we didn't eat on the flight). There are so many stray dogs it was SO sad. Dogs and cats are not pampered anywhere we went while visiting. Our translator was shocked that my dog is even allowed in the house nevermind that she sleeps on the bed, couch....it is pretty unheard of. Dogs live outside. She was even more shocked when I showed her a photo of my sister's potbellied pig snoozing on the couch:rolleyes1
The only thing that saved me from getting depressed over all the strays was they weren't really skinny like they were starving and most were shepard type crosses so they had thicker coats for the cold Ukrainian winter.

a distant cousins kitty. I snuck it a few pieces of meat from the house. It looked so hungry and kept crying to me.

Great photos.

Thanks for sharing Ukraine photos - it must have been hard seeing all those hungry animals. :guilty:

It was really hard. DH said next we go we will pack less clothes and put some dog and cat treats in our luggage:) My mom said she wants to start a rescue and maybe get them spayed, neutered and vaccinated, somehow. Kind of like what we do with feral cats here.
One morning there was a pack sleeping in the sun, in the grass in the middle of a roundabout. There are many abandoned barns and buildings left from when Ukraine got its independence from the Soviet Union and they had all the collective farms. Hopefully these guys and girls sleep in them when the weather gets cold. Western Ukraine weather is very similar to southern NH. Not like Siberia but still too cold to sleep outdoors.

There may be some groups that already offer help to some of these countries. I know places like World Wildlife Fund and even the MSPCA (MA) over the years were working on establishing spay/neuter programs and veterinary clinics, education programs, anti-cruelty laws, etc. See if you can find some already in place and maybe contribute to their efforts? :flower3:

I will definitely ask our translator about established rescues next time I talk to her. She did say there was a vet in town but it seems like neutering isn't high on their list. Even male dogs tied in yards were still 'intact':(

Different day....same silly dogs...playing the same silly games in the pasture...:goodvibes

I'm a bit late to the party, but I wanted to share this photo that I took on Thursday. Tara is 16 1/2 years old and the WORST subject. It took me 20 minutes to get this photo while she was enjoying her daily walk around the yard (every time I tried to take a picture, she'd turn her head or walk away  ). So I'm pretty happy she finally held still long enough for me to get a decent photo:

We got a new puppy this weekend!
I guess he's a boxer-mix...we got him at the Humane Society, so your guess is as good as mine. Doesn't matter, anyway, we're already in love...
