Photographing Pets

She was so beautiful. Her eyes just shone with intelligence!

But yes, RBennett, I am always deeply emotional when a loved animal dies. I look at my 10 y.o. Augusta and I can't let myself think even for a moment of how I will ever cope when I lose her or my sweet Grace. I can't begin to tell you how much they mean to me or how much I love them.

Yet, I would never, ever deprive myself of the sweet, perfect joy of the company of a dog (in my case, a Labrador Retriever) just because I so intensely dread their loss. To miss the opportunity to see their smiles, the touch of their soft fur, their smell, the sound of their excited barks and whine would be the ultimate tragedy. Every moment that I spent in their company is so worth the intensity of the pain and sadness that I have felt before and that I will certainly feel again. I can't live without a dog any more easily than I could live without water, food or air.

And so, I try to keep in mind the words of Theodore Geisel, (Dr Seuss)
"Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened"

Gentle hugs to HJD0411 and those who will ever grieve the loss of such a perfect love.

Laura

I have tears in my eyes reading that, Laura. Well said, very true, though:) A friend of mine has a 13 y.o black lab who is failing. I was in tears when she told me. They were our next door neighbors when they 1st got her as a puppy. I started thinking about my Hershey- who is 5. She is my best buddy.
I'm glad I'm not the only super emotional one around here!

hjd0411- So sorry for your loss:(

Taken yesterday from the huge snowstorm we were hit with!!

How cute is that puppy! He is loving the snow!! Do you have to get anything to protect their paws from the cold? We don't have snow here in Brisbane, so I'm curious what happens!

We don't put anything on Hershey's feet in the snow. We snowshoe in the mts with her all the time. She actually went into a running brook last week! She's a lab, though, no keeping her out of the water even when it is 20degrees outside. It doesn't seem to bother her.

So tired of rain........

Ivan is filthy....

Jonas is going crazy from being stuck in the house so much due to the mud....so I let him out despite the water to burn off some energy...

I am LOVING this thread! The pix are awesome. I'm particularly fond of the Labraodorables, Goldens, GSDs & Dachshunds, as I'm owned by a herd of doxies, a Golden & a GSD, & my first three guide dogs were Labs.

I've not gotten thru the entire thread yet, and will add some of my own pix soon. But had to stop & post, and also this pic by Kyen I have to say is just too sweet...

I have had a sad day today - I had to have my dear little Skye put to sleep. She has been with us for 18 years, and was most definitely the leader of my small pack! :)
She had been off colour for a couple of days, but was very listless on Sunday, and on Sunday night I discovered a very large and hard lump in her tummy that the vet thought could be a tumour on her mammary gland. (She showed no sign of that until Sunday.) She was in some discomfort, so we decided that the best thing for her was to end her discomfort.
As I write this through many tears that have been shed for her, I firmly believe that she is now much more comfortable, and back to her lively younger self where she can see, hear and run in the grass like she did.
I will miss her every day.

My heart goes out to you hjd0411! You have lost a very special friend very suddenly. I am so sorry. I hope you gain comfort in the words of those here!

Horses had some fun in the snow!!! Ivan is originally from Wisconsin and then lived in North Dakota so I think he was happy to see snow!!

and these are definitely NOT pets and are the main reason why the cats can't go outside!!! I only have 4 acres so these bad boys are not far from the house at all....:scared1: I've seen coyotes in my pasture before, but never two of them, and never in the middle of the day. I think one of them was limping a little, and as much as I dislike coyotes I hope it's ok.

:scared1: :scared1: You know they're out there, but it's chilling to actually see them. We have them where we live, too.

LOVE THIS!!

My DH says that Ivan's a big horse. Is that true? How big is he? Would love to hear more about him. (Needless to say, I know nothing about horses - but wish I did!)

Welcome to the thread KAYzEyes!

I would love to see you post the pics of your guide dogs from the other thread. I :lovestruc those back shots!

The coyotes do scare me since the dogs run around out there all the time and I don't know if they would have enough sense to stay away from them.

Ivan is a big horse, we haven't measured him but he's got to be at least 16 hands. (a hand is 4 inches). He's tall and also "big boned" lol, and could never be a small horse!

I do have one question for everyone on here. Whenever you hear of a fellow DISer or fellow pet owner losing a friend like this, do you find yourself overly emotional for the next few days?? Ever since I heard about this, I have become emotional towards my own dog who is barely even one year old and in good health. But I find myself thinking about that dreadful reality that is hopefully years away, and it almost brings me to tears. We become so close to our pets that it doesn't seem fair that we only get to spend such a short time with them. I've even been asking myself this week if I would ever get another pet after this one because the heartache will be too much. I know so much one here especially, we focus on the photography of our pets but I wanted to kind of touch on this subject so that it might help others and myself deal with this. :sad1:
Yes, I do feel wistful when I hear of someone dealing with the loss of a pet. It makes me remember how it felt to lose my own. It's a crappy time of pet ownership, for sure.

But I also think of all the years we have of good times. Somehow, over time, for me anyway, the good feelings overshadow the bad ones.

I'm also the type of person who gets another pet right away. It's just too hard to be without one. We developed a way of naming our dogs that pays tribute to the "previous" dog, the one just lost. That makes it feel as if it's more a kinship than a replacement.

I remember when the last dog I lost was sick. (He was one of the brother/sister pair from the OP.) We'd already gotten a female pup after the female part of the pair had passed. He was so old and sickly, and I was laying on the floor with him. He was looking at the pup. And I told him, "You know, she's the one who's going to take care of us when you leave". :sad1: Almost six years later, it's very true. She's loved as much as they ever were. And she's doing a great job taking care of us, just as I knew she would. :thumbsup2

But those are the types of things that run through my head when I hear of someone losing a pet. The one thing I hate to hear is "I can never get another". Yes, it's painful. But another soothes the hurt, and eventually, there's the type of love there you thought you couldn't feel again.

Pets are just so special in our lives, aren't they? :lovestruc

I like your pictures! This last one especially. :lovestruc

I hope you don't mind me commenting from a photography perspective how you could improve this one. That graininess (seen most on bottom of cat body) is called Noise, and it occurs when the ISO is on a high setting. You might check your camera to see if it's set that way accidentally (I've done it myself many times) or if you set it that way on purpose, see if you can get better natural light in order to get the shot. If shots do come out this way, you can run them through Noise Reduction software to lessen it. And lastly, you might try cropping to get out some of the excess window.

Hope you don't mind the comments. It's a great shot that could be even better!

mylittleprincess, I hope you don't mind. I did a really quick edit for you. I ran it through Noiseware (which still left some noise visible) and cropped out some of the window. I had to lol to see you're using an S3 IS. I knew it looked familiar (I use one, too - these days as backup to my dSLR). You have to watch that back ISO button, you can hit it by accident. Also, if you're shooting high ISO in your last session, you have to remember to change it on your next one.

Anyway, I really like the picture! :lovestruc

I do. Everytime I go to this thread to look at the pictures, I get tears in my eyes. I lost my dog in November. She was my best friend. I do want another dog but I just don't feel like its time yet. I miss her. :sad1:

Hard to believe that this little starving stray went from this in September...
