With the 4th of July coming up, I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to practice fireworks pics before attempting at WDW or DLR. I'm an avid reader of Tom Bricker's site and I know he co-authored an eBook on photographing fireworks. I cannot get his link to work, and when I Google it, I can find the site, but it won't let me purchase.

Is it not available any more?

I can't get to it either. Had I known about it, I would have already purchased it if for no other reason than to support Tom.

He'll see this post and let us know what's going on.

How about this?

1) Use tripod.
1a) Edit Turn OFF IS if your lens has it
2) Set exposure for 5.6-11 (my opinion. I mostly use 11)
3) Set shutter for 3-10 seconds depending on f-stop
4) Set focus to infinity and back off two clicks.
5) Set timer for 2 second delay
6) Click shutter.
7) Wait x seconds before touching anything again (See 3 above.).

How's that? :thumbsup2

Edit: Forgot ISO to 100. Sorry. Forgot that.

Loving the Cliff Notes version. :lmao:

How about adding "Consult lens instruction manual to see if IS needs to be turned off."

Yep. Forgot that! And I've done it before too. Illuminations. Once. Never checked a single shot until it was all over. Haven't done that again either.

Well, how do you think I know? ;)

I shot from the Poly beach and used a different lens so I could get more zoom. The one I typically use in the park I don't have to worry about turning off IS. The one I used that night did. Oops.

I used to use f/11 but cameras with smaller sensors (including the ones I now carry) are pretty far into diffraction by then. I try not to use anything beyond f/8 now and even f/5.6 or wider for best sharpness if I can. This sometimes requires a ND filter since some cameras (including mine) don't go below ISO 160.

Who said fireworks was easy? ;) But I also have some taken in Aperture or even Program mode that look great!

a book about photographing fireworks?

this is the internet !

how about googling "photographing fireworks" ?

here ya go

The book was a great resource. The guys that worked on it were some of the first to use ND filters. They discussed that and how to process the photos. Definitely worth the price. More than you can get from other how to's on the web.

Bulb mode is better. You can control the exposure better.

Also for Wishes you'll need to drop F16+ and probably have an ND to capture the finale.

Thank you all for the interest! Adam (one of the co-authors) closed the book's website because there wasn't much interest in it anymore. Coincidentally, it will be on sale starting Monday at Picture Correct. They have done a sale on the eBook there for the last couple July 4ths. http://www.picturecorrect.com/photography-deals/
