You are correct sir!
The birds are very cool. Nice shots and cute kids too. I don't think I could find time to shoot with kids. Great job!

Here are a few pictures from the local zoo here. Didn't even cover half the zoo and took over 400 pictures. They were all made using P mode on a Nikon D80 with the 18-135 lense. These photos are unedited.

I would appreciate some honest feedback on them! In a day or so I will post some photos taken entirely on manual!

OK, I'll give my attempt at an opinion... hehehehee

this one I like the colors and form of nature against the concrete block.

pretty crisp, good color, the subject is a little bit too centered?

I like the texture of the rope/cable and it really draws me up to... and that is where I have the problem. The rope is lost in the leaves, my mind jumps to the other rope which leads me to a structure. but I have no idea what it was for.

who doesn't laugh at these guys. nice crisp shots. there is an urge to pup up the saturation to make the pic pop, but in real life they are covered in dust and don't pop. In fact they want to look like dirt to keep from being eaten, hehehehe

actually the browns inthe top shot are pretty rich.

OK I can't comment, heheheheheee

this one is a little crooked, no worse than any of my shots. I need to work on it. I am confused as to whether I should be looking at the dock foreground or the lake background...

these flowers love the camera don't they? Nice natural colors again. good exposure and a pleasant composition.

I think many will look good printed and hanging on a wall.

Awesome!! Thanks for the reviews and I appreciate your insight. I never thought about that on the bridge, but you are right. I appreciate your comments greatly!

and I couldn't focus beyond the metal fences. I'm not sure what to do to focus beyond that. Had some great chances at photos of the leopards and cheetah's, but camera would only focus on fence. Help please. I have a Nikon D40. Just got a few months ago and am trying to learn and play with it like crazy. Just can't always keep all the info in my head and not sure what to do all the time.

For something like that, manual focus might have been better. It should have let you focus past the fencing. Just my quick 2 cents worth.

That often calls for MF. The AF just cannot ignore all the nice lines of the fence. It often helps to use a wide aperture so that the DOF does not include the fence in focus. You can probably still tell it is there, but it will not be too bad.

Also, welcome! :)

What focus option were you using? Closest Subject (which I believe is the default and what most people just getting into dSLR's would use) will let the camera choose where to focus. Single Area. This will allow YOU to stitch between the 3 focus boxes in the view finder so YOU can decide where the focus will be. There is also Dynamic Area which is almost like single area, except you would use it when your subject is moving like in sports.

Shooting through the fence, get up close so your lens is just about looking through 1 square of the chain link fence. Choose single area then choose the middle box and focus where you want.

Well, I needed a mental health day, so I took a vacation day today and went to the Pittsburgh Zoo. We kept hearing on the news about all these new zoo babies, so I wanted to see them for myself. There were 6 beaver babies, but they were tucked away in the shade so my pictures turned out pretty bad. But, here are some other babies. BIG babies!!

There were 2 baby elephants born in July, something of a rare occurrence. The babies were out with the rest of the herd this morning - 5 adults, 2 babies, one elephant handler and one photographer with a very big lens. (I guess they were doing some promotional photos.)

Here are the stats on the babies, including birth weight:scared1:

Here's the youngest, Zuri:

Awwww..... I think this is the mom, but there were 2 elephants that were constantly watching the baby.

The older one, Angelina:

Here's the elephant handler wrestling with Angelina. I'm not too sure I'd want to do that with a 300+ pound "baby"!!

More zoo photos to come.....

We've also got a baby tiger that was born a few months ago. I don't think the mother actually rejected the baby, but she wasn't caring for it as she should have, so the zoo keepers are raising the tiger until he/she can join the 2 adults.

Later on, a sleepy baby:

One of these is the mom, I'm not sure which:

Not exactly babies, I think these polar bears are more like teenagers. I'm surprised the photos turned out as well as they did - I was shooting thru scuffed-up plexiglass that had water drops all over it.

The zookeepers threw in an old plastic drum for them to play with.

This guy stood up and threw it in the water so both of them could play:

A few other miscellaneous shots from the zoo. Check out the human-like face on this guy!

And I just had to get a butterfly/flower shot:

Hope you enjoyed them! It was such a nice break for me, something I really needed. I should do stuff like this more often!

Very, very nice work! I felt like I got a mental health break too! Hmm--note to self--schedule mental health day for myself.
