If it's any consolation, the 70-300vr is about $50-75 less than what I paid for mine, a year ago ($425-$450 online, depending on where you shop).

Great shots! I have the same setup and love it. Makes shooting lots of fun. My favorite is #3 and I also noticed the shutter was 1/50sec at 300mm. That's really sharp. Good job.

To be fair, there was thick plate glass between me and the subject and I was able to hold the front of the lens against the glass for additional support, so it was not all VR. #3 was my favorite, too. I have never gotten a good gorilla shot at AK, so I was very pleased to get a good one yesterday.
